If you are looking for a messaging app that you can use to communicate with your fellow players and DM while everyone is at work, then any of the apps I listed will work, so I'm not sure what the issue is.
Given the fact that you are looking for the Mobile Version of DDB to have a PM feature, you are already planning on using your phone for the messages, so just pick an App that everyone agrees on and you are set to start communicating.
Our group uses FB Messenger for communication inside and outside of games. We play remote via Discord using Arkenforge, so we have different chat channels for the following:
Session Chat (for everyone to communicate if needed, or the DM to send messages out that will affect the whole group)
Player Chat (for just the players to communicate during the game without disrupting what is happening in the game)
General Chat & One-Shot (for everyone one my friends that I know plays D&D, we share memes, jokes, etc. on top of coordinating One-Shots when our main session is not happening due to scheduling conflicts, etc.)
