After months of consideration, many sessions played and ran, and most recently the character sheet revamp dropping, I finally decided to get the legendary bundle.
I have to admit that I was a little disappointed when I noticed that new character icon frames and backgrounds do not come with a purchase like this. I previously ordered XGtE, so I have these, but I would think that buying the legendary bundle (if not individual books) including MToF would unlock it's additional features too. This seems like a very unimportant detail, and to most it would be, but it would be nice to get that little exclusive reward from buying into the platform fully.
Here's the strangest part; the Marketplace, currently featuring two pre-orders, contain the typical disclaimer proclaiming that pre-ordering gets you these extra little features. The same thing was attached to all previous pre-orders. I assume that what DDB is trying to say that those benefits are exclusive to pre-ordering customers.
Pre-ordering on D&D Beyond will grant early access to adventure portraits, character frames, character sheet backdrops, and theme colors.
It quite clearly states that pre-ordering will grant early access to those features. It does not say it will grant such access exclusively. This actually suggests that all of these things will be available to everyone who buys the book past launch, but that is not the case.
I'd suggest changing this disclaimer, or simply allowing these extra features to everyone who buys a book that would contain them on launch.
Dunno, just my two cents.

They do appear to be available only if you pre-purchase like you were saying. I purchased XGtE before I purchased the legendary bundle and never got the icons/backgrounds associated with it. I did pre-purchase MToF, but if you look at the MToF's description it no longer shares any details about getting the icons or backgrounds. It wasn't that you didn't unlock them because you bought the legendary bundle, but because they were only available to people who decided to pre-purchase it.
Stormknight doesn't hint towards being able to get XGtE's frames/backgrounds, but instead says in future ones. And the two that are currently up for pre-purchase are offering special ones.

That’s my point. The additional note about this on pre order purchases says it provides early access to these features, not exclusive access which is effectively what’s happening.

I'll try to explain this through for everyone, as I understand it - please note that this isn't a formal statement or committment from Curse, but my own thoughts on the matter. :)
A number of recent releases from Wizards of the Coast have included "early access" on D&D Beyond to cosmetic features for the character sheet (frames, backdrops etc).
I consider it likely that this will continue - there will be further cosmetic features available for pre-purchasing upcoming releases.
What does "early access" mean, especially for those who didn't pre-order?
First off, it doesn't guarantee that all of these cosmetic features will be available for everyone in the future. What it does mean is that Curse want to keep options available - they might add them to the Legendary Bundle in the future? It's possible. There may also be other ways of acquiring them.
So far, the only other examples of "early access" with D&D Beyond has been the racial feats - these remained exclusive for 12 months, if I recall correctly. This doesn't necessarily mean anything , but may be an indicator of the sort of timeframe that we're talking about.

While this wasn’t directly what you were asking, for those that missed them, there may be options coming?
