Do you think D&D would ever have a playable skunk race as an official option? Why or why not? I think it would be nice to see seeing they're my favorite animals.
I doubt that would be something they will do. A humanoid skunk species has no history in D&D and adding new species doesn’t seem to be a priority, from what I can tell. People have been asking for a humanoid dog playable species for years.
They did try to introduce Aardling in the UA which could have animal features, iirc. But that didn’t make it into the 2024 core books. But could show up down the line.
Just saying but dragonborn with poison breath cloud could be a start for a skunk person.

"Where words fail, swords prevail. Where blood is spilled, my cup is filled" -Cartaphilus
"I have found the answer to the meaning of life. You ask me what the answer is? You already know what the answer to life is. You fear it more than the strike of a viper, the ravages of disease, the ire of a lover. The answer is always death. But death is a gentle mistress with a sweet embrace, and you owe her a debt of restitution. Life is not a gift, it is a loan."
Maybe the closest you could get is an Ardling that could be skunk-skinned.
But if you're thinking of a skunk race, here's some racial traits I could think of.
+2 STR, +1 CON -figure the strength of skunks to burrow and all and then CON since races with poison-adjacent stuff tend to get that. But certainly amenable to what the default bonuses could be.
Darkvision 60ft -skunks are active at night, makes sense
Walking Speed: 30ft Burrow Speed: 10ft -Would be unique to have a naturally-burrowing race. Opens up some interesting tactics ideas. Strong for caster wanting to cast and then burrow for cover. Or a rogue that hits-and-runs.
Scary Markings: You gain proficiency with the Intimidation skill -Since you know... skunk...
Stinking Spray: Using an action, you can release a foul stench within a 15ft cone from you. Each creature must make a DC 8+prof+CON_MOD saving throw or become frightened of you for 1 minute. This ability recharges on a long or short rest. (Or has prof-bonus uses per long rest depending on your design philosophy.) -This should mimic the way skunks use their spray as a deterrent.
Prestidigitation exists; cast to soil someone's clothes or make them smell putrid. I'd use Tasha's Custom Lineage race and give them access to that cantrip for that purpose. Yuan-ti have a limited animal friendship, so why not?
Give them a reputation for stubbornly standing their ground and ruining someone's day if challenged. The distinct black-with-white-stripe ought to be enough to tell learned individuals not to mess with them.
