I also have to disagree here. In 1 and 2e we didn’t make builds because there were no builds to make.
In 1e that was mostly true outside of dual-classing shenanigans, but by AD&D era, with kits and specialization, looking multiple levels ahead was definitely a thing.

Yep, and the AD&D CD-ROM made that so much easier since you could pick from a bunch of sources super quick and do it that way too.
