I am running a fighter Battlemaster build and currently have a warhammer and battleaxe. I usually use one or the other in any given encounter, but I am try to find out if I can dual wield them since they have the "verstile" trait and I've been finding mixed answers online.
One source says that if I'm using versatile weapons and have the Two-weapon fighting style coupled with the Dual Wielder ability score improvment then it negates the condition that both weapons need the Light trait, but I can't find anything in the rule book to back that up. Does anyone know if and how I'd be able to dual these weapons?
The dual feat in 2024 left in the verbiage light. So no in what you’re trying to do by rule, you cannot do in 2024. The weapons don’t have to be finesse, but they have to be light.
The feat in 2014. It removed the light verbiage so yes as long as it wasn’t too handed you could have done that.
if you’re a player and want your DM to do this, have a conversation with them. If I were the DM and you were a “” large creature A goliath in or half orca etc and spent 2 feat trying to make this happen. I would probably give it to you. But I would need something more than just I want to. The combination is odd so it seems like you’re trying to max something. if it was classic barbarian, two battle axes one was my grandfather‘s one was my father‘s before me, again, I would probably give it to you.
Now the racism comes in if you’re a gnome trying to do this it’s a hard no. 😂
Two weapon fighting feeds off the light weapons not versatile weapons. In 2024 if both weapons are light you get two attacks ( one in the attack action and one as a bonus action) if one is with a Nick mastery weapon then both attacks are in the attack action. The dual wielder feats allows you use a non light, non two handed weapon in place of one of the light weapons and gives you a bonus action to use with it. The problem is that you are only allowed a single bonus action so if you have 3 weapons you can (potentially) attack with two light weapons including a Nick weapon in the attack action and then attack with your versatile weapon (one handed) n the bonus action. So potentially you can use either one but not both. In 2024 there is no more wielding two non light weapons.
Others already answered. But if you want the theme of having an axe and a hammer and be actually able to use them with two-weapon fighting, you could go for a handaxe and a light hammer. Both are Light weapons, both have the thrown property, and the light hammer has even the nick property. You would loose access to the topple mastery, but at 9th level you could use still push, and then also sap or slow.
You can wield a Warhammer and a Battleaxe and attack with either weapon when you take the Attack action. Or even both when you have Extra Attack.
But attacking with any of those weapons won't enable you to make one extra attack as a Bonus Action because they are not Light weapons, this even if you have the Dual Wielder feat.
Because you always have to first attack with a weapon having the Light Property.
Yes that's correct, you can dual wield two non-light weapons at lv5 if you have Extra Attack, and make your two attacks this way, one with each weapon.
If i was your DM i would allows it if you can give me a a reason why. I might make up a feat so you can. It's called a handbook and a guide neither are written in stone and as a DM it's my world and my rules. WoTC does not control your fun nor should anyone else.
