Reading responses lately, I feel like the AMA last month has been completely overlooked or not read here. I couldn't see anyone else's recap, so I thought I'd highlight some of the ones I find most interesting.
Soo, does this mean you start looking at all the "this is not supported on DND Beyond" features, that come up with old and new content (also including partnered content)?
WOTC_BrianPerry: Exactly. The Game Platform rebuild will get us to greater rules support. We will need to get through the rebuild first, and then we will start to go back and add support for rules not currently supported.
Is there any plan to update the way we create homebrew? While the feature is functional, it's far from streamlined. Instead of meticulously editing text akin to HTML, I'd much prefer systems that allow wholistic or modular editing. Like if I change a modifier I wish it would do it on the entire homebrew.
WOTC_BrianPerry: We’re first focusing on the Game Platform rebuild, which will unlock greater customization. We definitely intend to make homebrew easier. It’s too early to talk about when and how we’ll support new functionality. What I will say is we’re going to focus on the most common homebrew use cases first, like monsters and magic items.
Which part of the new GameBuilder do things like proper backwards compatibility for warlock invocations fall under?
WOTC_BrianPerry: Yes, the Game Platform rebuild is intended to address things like Warlock invocations not fully working. And yes, unfortunately, this rebuild is a lengthy project without shortcuts. We’ve been slapping band-aids on the current backend that was built over a decade ago, with Warlock invocations being a prime example of something not supported within the architecture.
the news about the big backend rebuild is, to me, the most exciting. i'm curious to know what features were difficult or even an impossibility to implement before that we can expect to work seamlessly through the new character builder. can you name some specific pain points you want to eliminate?
WOTC_BrianPerry:
I asked the team to give me a list of their top pain points and got quite the list back. Here are just a few things that are near impossible to implement today that will be possible with the rebuild.
Monsters or Stat Blocks that scale with your character level (for example, the Draconic Spirit from the Summon Dragon spell, or sidekicks from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything)
Using Hit Dice as an expendable resource (like with the Durable feat)
Giving Magic Items actions. For example, today, you can't roll the additional Fire damage for a Flame Tongue weapon
Having conditions work in the character sheet
A lot of UX-based things, such as being able to expend a spell slot to recharge a feature
The Aberrant Mind and Clockwork Soul's level 1 feature from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
Charms/Blessings
Content that meaningfully deviate from the D&D 5E core rules in a non-trivial way
Minimum dice values (like with a Rogue's Reliable Talent feature)
Wider Eldritch Invocation support (like being able to target spells that aren't Eldritch Blast with Agonizing Blast*)*
The list goes on. I’m stopping here to keep it from becoming a novel.
When will there be content in other languages on the official website? Those of us who own the physical books should be able to register a code for the digital version free of charge, or at least receive a larger discount, since we have the more expensive edition.
WOTC_BrianPerry: The Game Platform rebuild effort unlocks many possibilities. Localization is one of those. It’s going to take us time to get there, but we do eventually plan to expand beyond English.
First is being able to customize Monsters. I'd like to swap out using a different image or even change names for them.
WOTC_Zac: Absolutely! In our Roadmap we call out custom uploads of Stickers and Reveals. Monster token art will possibly get rolled up into that project too. I also have plans for what we're calling "simplified homebrew." Those plans are still a little fuzzy, but as we get closer I'll be doing lots of very public research about how we can best do that.
Can you please improve the My Encounters tool? I print and paint all of my terrain and only play in person, so i don't need a VTT. The My Encounters tool is starting to break and it's not fit for purpose anymore, but it is still better than the Maps VTT for my use case. Please update the My Encounters tool and get it out of beta. I don't care about calculating dificulty, I just want a simple combat tracker that doesn't require a map.
WOTC_Zac:
Yes! I love the Encounter Builder tool. Under the hood, it is very old, archaic, and fragile, which has made it very difficult to update and enhance. It definitely needs a lot of love. The Encounter Builder does a lot of things really well, and a few things not so well. Meanwhile, the Encounter Manager in Maps does some things really well, and some things not so well.
On my list of things to do is to revisit both the Encounters Builder, and the Encounter Manager in Maps, and see what we can do to improve both. This improvement will be part of our evolution of Maps to be a tool that you can run with players as a VTT, or by yourself as a game management platform with a suite of DM Prep tools.
That being said - I have absolutely heard that not everyone wants to use a full-on VTT. As we get closer to looking at the Encounter Builder, I intend to do a full-on listening tour to understand all the ways people use this tool and to make sure we’re able to continue to support DMs.
We are definitely exploring both improvements to all the Encounter tools (inside and outside of Maps), and what a "theater of the mind mode" would look like.
Hey, I have bought several DnD books in shops, and I have recently started using DnD beyond. I love the app, but I was wondering if there was a way to add my books to my account? Thank you for your time!
WOTC_BrianPerry: Not right now. We have a D&D Beyond coupon pilot program at a few local game stores right now with physical purchases. But there are a lot of learnings and logistics the team has to figure out with this small trial before we announce or roll out anything more broadly.
When exporting character sheets to PDF, will it be possible to export them into the 2024 character sheet instead of the 2014 sheet?
WOTC_BrianPerry: Something in consideration. This is something we’ll have to look at once we get through our Game Platform rebuild, as its tied up in that.
Hi, do you plan to add optional log sheet for AL or LoG play for characters?
WOTC_BrianPerry: Nothing to announce here yet, but we have been talking with Baldman Games about what support they would like to see on D&D Beyond in the future for organized play like Legends of Greyhawk.
Thanks for the summary, I try to avoid Reddit so no way I was ever going to see these responses without your help. Sounds like we’ve got some interesting times ahead so long as he’s being realistic and not just promising a rebuild that answers every question regardless of whether it’ll actually solve the problem
