Dark Sun - Don't use it being a "mature setting" be used as a way of avoiding the (imo) necessary work the setting needs to not be as problematic as it historically has been
I am not sure we can pass judgment on whether the product will be “problematic” until we see the final product. Simply having mature themes and difficult content does not mean the product is “problematic” - it just means that more care needs to be had to ensure the setting makes it very clear “this is bad, we’re not condoning this, y’all are supposed to be the heroes fighting against it.”
From where I am sitting, there’s a lot of evidence to assume this book is in pretty good hands. We know a major reason Perkins and Crawford stepped down is because they felt they were not the right stewards to take on difficult themes. We know the new design team has a diverse background and history of taking on complex themes, including through the lens of those with oppressed ancestry. I am optimistic they built a team explicitly to take on content like this, and am very curious on if they can deliver.
I think Davyd's use of "problematic" was describing how the setting has been, which is fairly accurate. I agree we don't have enough data to know how they will handle it now.
I have nothing at all against a Warcraft book for those interested in that world. However, I'm definitely not a fan of making what sounds like important setting-neutral content part of that book.
Yeah, I really don't like that they're putting updated 5.5e versions of existing 5e subclasses and stuff like that in these things without releasing them in general D&D books first.
Just because it starts there doesn't mean it won't end up being general later. See also Spores Druid and Glory Paladin, both of which first debuted in Magic the Gathering books.
Very emotional, but Joe is completely right, these guys should be on Mt. Rushmore of TTRPG.
I am really looking forward to all the Icons topics, sounds very interesting. And it's a great move to create a Player Handbook version with a more mature fantasy artwork. I will buy this instantly!
Now waiting for tomorrow, when Realmsbound and Ed Greenwood will talk about Guide to the Dalelands and on which Region they will start to work next. So many Forgotten Realms content we can expect in the upcoming years. I am so happy!
I hope Margaret is okay. They announced both their names but only Hickman was on stage with no explanation given that I heard, and she's getting up there.
Yea, I'm surprised there isn't more talk about Death Saves: The Blood War. It's sounding pretty unique and interesting. I watched the live one shot game and it does seem like an attempt to do an official DnD setting that caters more to an OSR style, even if not entirely. Plus the "last world" setting where demons win the Blood War and overrun the Multiverse is just really bold for an official product.

Probably because we only has a synopsis and a live play and practically nothing else: format, dates, artwork, etc.

As I understand it, the demons are mostly gone. The Lady of Pain sacrificed herself and basically blew up the multiverse, except for this one remaining world. Any gods of other NPCs may or may not be around and may or may not be radically changed depending on how the DM wants to do it. It’s kind of like a remix of the current status quo, giving the DM license to re-imagine everything.
And I didn’t watch the live play, but in reading about it, it seems like Mike Mearls was incorporating some of the ideas he’s been writing about as he develops his own version of 5e. (Which, btw, has been really interesting even for folks like me on the free teir of his patreon.)

The demons are greatly diminished by the Lady of Pain's sacrifice yes, but seemed to still be around and significant enough to be a threat to the Last World. The one shot for example had Yeenoghu's follower/avatar as the main antagonist. And it was mentioned that the Abyss is still around in some form and encroaching on the world or something.
And while I'm not familiar with the system Mike Mearls is developing and I haven't been following it, his involvement in Death Saves makes me more confident and hyped for it. The new mechanics they showed in the live game all seemed fun and interesting. Making it more grimdark (for example, every 10 min inside a dangerous zone, the threat level rises and bad stuff becomes increasingly likely to happen).

With Warcraft book I was hoping for shaman class to be added to dnd even if stayed in own bubble of Warcraft game.
An official shaman class would have been great but I'm not surprised we aren't getting one. If you're looking for an alternative I've always liked class creator laserllama's take on shaman: https://www.patreon.com/laserllama/posts/shaman-class-v6-119353838

I'm guessing the Elements Barb will be their take on Enhancement Shaman.
