GrandPyromania: This app is built using our new game platform - we'll be able to (and plan to) prioritize the UX and overall rules support! Much like what Zac is doing with Maps, we'll continue to listen to feedback and adjust things to ensure we're building the right thing.
WOTC_BrianPerry: Hey all! We'll do a deeper dive into our roadmap and everything announced for D&D Beyond in the next few weeks.
The thing we're most excited to talk about with the new play experience is the fact that it's running on a brand new game platform and rules engine.
I also want to stress something I said in the keynote. We have a lot of ideas for how we think the new play experience can help your play. We'll get some ideas wrong. Which is why we're going to build this iteratively to ultimately get it to the best experience that is really useful for your play.
Did WOTC remove the "My Homebrew Creations" button
WOTC_Elliot: Hey OP, yes, I did.
Previously we had 3 link slots being devoted to navigating to homebrew because the other two links are buttons on the homebrew page that were hidden on mobile web view making it impossible for mobile web to navigate there. This week the team fixed the homebrew page so that the other two buttons/links are now available in a mobile web view, thus allowing me to consolidate the 3 links down to 1 and freeing up navigation space for other play tools, like the new D&D Event Finder!
I hope this answers your question and happy gaming!
We fixed the mobile web version of the homebrew page which allowed me to also fix the navigation to have a single link point to homebrew instead of three links pointing to homebrew due to a previous gap in our mobile web view.
That said I know our website is nine years old and many of our older pages and systems are overdue for updates. Thankfully we are actively working on improving our game data and architecture now which will allow us to improve these older features, like homebrew!
WOTC_Zac: Right now, it's just in Maps. We're the Maps team and so it's easy to control our roadmap. Other teams have other priorities, so it takes a bit longer to get something over there.
But my long term vision is to have Journals available anywhere you might be playing!
Hi! I would like to know that’s planed at all for VTT
WOTC_Zac: Great question! DDB publishes our roadmap and updates it several times a year. I believe we're planning on updating it shortly, now that the Gencon announcements have been made.
People often forget how young Maps is - Foundry was first released in 2006, whereas Maps is not even 3 years old yet. But as a brief recap of 2026 so far, we've released:
Polygonal Fog of War
Copy/Paste
Monster Art Reveals (5000+ pieces of art)
3D Dice on Maps
Shared Dice
Shared Dice on Mobile
Dice Instancing (improved performance for 28 die sets)
Journals v1, v2, and v3
Rebuilt Map Browser
Maps support for DDB Drops (125+ maps, 250+ reveals for any subscriber)
Token Menu Refresh
Enlarge/Reduce token size
Condition Tracking v1 (with a few more iterations coming imminently)
Plus countless bug fixes, minor improvements, and iterations on the above features.
And we're only just past the halfway point of the year. :)
And at Gencon about two hours ago, we announced we're working on DM tools that can exist outside of Maps for people who don't need a VTT or prefer to use a different VTT.
And a quick note, because you mentioned Foundry only requires you to pay once: Maps is actually free! There are a few features that require a Hero or Master tier subscription, but by hosting the product we can make it accessible to people who don't want to figure out how to host it themselves. We know some people want that added control of self-hosting, which is great! But that's also a barrier for some people.
Dynamic lighting is currently the only thing preventing me from leaving roll20 for this.
WOTC_Zac: Dynamic Lighting is not currently on our roadmap. I'm not saying we'll never introduce something like it, but the current typical implementations are very cludgey, finnicky, and not consistent with the product philosophy we have for Maps.
WOTC_Zac: Dynamic Lighting is a tricky beast. A lot of people request it, but the way most VTTs implement it it's a very clonky and finicky thing to set up.
We've done some internal prototyping of different ways we could do it, but haven't found anything that feels as simple and straightforward as we want it to be.
Hey Zac! No expectations publicly, and no real expectations privately but sincerely concerned. How's the working atmosphere over there?
WOTC_Zac: I've only been here about ten months, and I know there were a lot of leadership changes about 11 months ago so I can't speak to how things were before I started. But in that time this is the best job I've ever had, and the most fun I've ever had at a job. Every single person at d&d - from the studio to DDB to the finance team to the legal team - are giant nerds who live and breathe and love this game.
We have the realities that come with being a business. Of course we could do more if we had more people, but books cost money to make and to print, servers cost money to run and engineers cost money to keep employed and building features. So every day we ask ourselves how we can build things that help more people play this game, how we can lower the barriers to entry, how we can make this game more accessible to more people.
u/WOTC_BrianPerry our executive producer frequently (FREQUENTLY) says D&D is the best way to hang out with your friends, and our mission is to make that the best experience we can. Every person at this company feels that so deeply from their own personal experience.
WOTC_Zac: Re: Universes Beyond: A friend of mine, Brian Weissman (very famous early pro magic player, inventor of "the deck"), told a story on a podcast recently about a conversation with Mark Rosewater (head designer on Magic). Here's the clip: https://youtube.com/shorts/tXcIT694Z08
I met him previous to this, and he hated the idea is UB. But the realization was that it's a front door that pulls more people into the game with IP, characters, and stories they're familiar with. "Is it bad that more people are playing D&D?"
And, in case anyone missed it in the keynote, it was discussed that UB is additive to our roadmap. We've hired up to support these projects, instead of taking away non-UB projects to make room for them.
With regards to the lack of a character sheet in the PHB, I would assume it's because you can download and print one off the Internet and photocopiers aren't as common at home as they used to be.
Kind of a niche request but a Maps mode intended for play by post use could be cool(for tracking combat in a play by post game, not for making/storing the posts themselves).
WOTC_Zac: There's been discussion of this. It would increase costs significantly. Is also becomes a risk for non-pbp games if players are messing with a map between games, and gets weird if the dm is prepping for their next session and has other maps up.
That's not a "no" but it would take some work to mitigate those issues.
In the video Looking For Group, we see a group using Maps and Video Chat (looks like Discord), all on one seamless screen. Do you know if dndbeyond is working on native Video Chat in Maps or some Discord integration? Thank you.
WOTC_Zac: I think that was supposed to represent having your video app of choice open next to your browser.
WOTC_Zac: We're still ramping up our usage of it, but rarely will we send something to everyone. More often we're sending things to smaller groups within in. Either because we want a particular segments opinion (less experienced DMs who mostly play in person with digital tools, for example), and also we just don't want to bother the whole list too often.
WOTC_Zac: My job is all about prioritization of finite resources (people's time), so I always ask lots of questions to make sure I understand exactly what someone is asking for to make sure we don't build the wrong thing.
If we could do both right away, that would be great, but each thing we choose to build next is choosing 499 other things not to build next.
It would be nice in the conditions sub menu if there was some hover text instead of clicking it and linking it to a new tab.
WOTC_Zac: Definitely something we'd like to bring to Maps!
Since all that data lives in our old systems that we're currently working to replace with our New Game Engine Rebuild project, we didn't want to delay Condition Tracking to bring that all in.
WOTC_Zac: Future versions of condition tracking will include effects (Vex, falling, 3/4 cover, concentration, etc) and custom conditions (Bad Hair Day, whatever else you want).
one thing i haven't seen talked about is adding conditions to multiple creatures at once. i was wondering if we could use the multi select and add the condition to multiple like when using rings.
WOTC_Zac: We thought through that for a little bit. There were a bunch of edge cases, and we didn't like any of our solutions to the edge cases.
What happens if one of the monsters you select already has that condition and another doesn't? What if ten monsters selected don't have the condition but two do? What if one of the monsters you select is immune to that condition? The mix and match states get really messy and I was pretty grumpy about it. How does adding a level of exhaustion work if one selected token is at 2 and one selected token is at 4?
I'm not saying it'll never happen but we couldn't find an elegant solution in the amount of time we had and we didn't want to delay releasing all the functionality for that one thing.
I hope you guys make some way to make the conditions more noticeable on the tokens or show up as icons above them perhaps without having to click the monster to see the conditions
WOTC_Zac: That's the plan! Check out the announcement Reddit post for it, and I talk about a number of the enhancements that are coming up for it.
Like with Journals, we're releasing parts of condition tracking as they're ready instead of making you wait longer to have it all at once (which also makes it hard for us to get feedback and make sure we're headed in the right direction).
Mate you never need to apologise for being late or skipping a public service you don’t have to do
Im very excited to see the new app but both the comments here and the stuff they showed off at the keynote make me worried that they might lose sight of how many people use the app. I like the look of the very BG3 player interface but hope they’re not making it harder to use as a plain character sheet. Having options at the touch of a button is nice but I want to roll physical dice and know what my modifier is without needing to roll the huge d20 in the middle of the screen. I’m also worried about the “we don’t want to replace anything at the table” they’ve previously said when that’s exactly what I want the app to do, I don’t want to carry a dozen books, I want an app where I can search for rules and look up stat blocks
I'm encouraged by the work so far! I don't use the Maps VTT so I'm very much looking forward to the new GM Screen / revamped Encounter Tracker. Was very much hoping for Dynamic Lighting but totally understand that they've not quite found the solution to the implementation issues they've so far run into.
