Ravenloft on Netflix

Gizmodo is reporting Alphonso Cuaron is making a live action ravenloft series for Netflix. Seems like at this point it’s too early to start popping the popcorn, but could be cool if/when it releases.

The same story says the live action FR series Netflix had been working on is no longer in development.

I will believe it when I see it out. Things keep getting cancelled so I ain't going to get invested. 
i was kinda looking forward to the Faerun one.

I also am very much in a “mhm. I’ll hold my excitement until there is a release date.”  We’ve been promised various D&D and Magic television products for years, sometimes with fairly lofty and impressive creative teams attached… and neither has come to fruition yet.  I fully expect this to remain in development Nine Hells with the rest of Wizards’ IP… and would absolutely love if Netflix defies my expectations.

I'm concerned they're going to depict his pursuit of Tatyana as some tragic true love, a la Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Describing Strahd as a "tragic antihero" and lines like "adventure collides with gothic horror and tragic romance" make me wince.

Strahd's story isn't a "tragic romance," it's the story of a man filled with regret for his own lost youth. Who turns that into an obsession first with his younger brother, then his younger brother's fiance.

Tatyana could have been anyone, ultimately. He doesn't love anything about her in particular, he's obsessed with what she represents to him.

It's just an announcement press release, so I don't want to assume too much based on the phrasing of a few sentences. But if they portray Strahd's feelings for Tatyana as "true love" (or mutual at all,) I'm assuming they hired a ghostwriter with the surname Von Holtz.

Don't assume this will be a Strahd story, all we've heard is it's a Ravenloft series. Who knows, maybe it'll be a horror anthology with each episode set in a different domain of dread.

And even if Season 1 gets made, who's not to say S2 takes 3 years for it to get produced, isn't as popular as S1 due to the time wait, and leaves S3 cancelled after a major cliffhanger. :P

But if it does get made should be interesting. I did enjoy the D&D movie.

I'll be disappointed if the Forgotten Realms show has been shelved but as others have said I've learnt not to hope for too much when it comes to D&D's multimedia projects because so many never seem to go anywhere. A Ravenloft series would be good, I doubt they'd directly adapt Curse of Strahd because then why bother to play it? but a show focusing on on of the other domains could be great

I want it to come out but people high up will say their isn’t demand or want for it

 To be fair, this is hardly unique to D&D. Most shows/movies in development don't get to the point of actually filming. (Also, according to the linked article, the FR show isn't in development any more. Which doesn't mean it won't be revived, but don't get your hopes up.)

If it is an anthology, it'll be more likely shifting per season, but linear narrative is the way to bet. (And, for a Netflix show, they should be planning for at most two or three seasons, which is a reasonable amount of time to tell a single story.)

It's Strahd's backstory, not the plot of the module

the series follows the making of the vampire Darklord Strahd von Zarovich, whose story of power, love, obsession, and undead transformation charts his origins from tragic antihero to one of Dungeons & Dragons’ most notorious villains.

Also, the article says that while the FR series has been shelved, the Baldur's Gate series at HBO from the creator of the Last of Us is still apparently in active development. Which to me perhaps hints that Hasbro decided two FR series was redundant, and backed the one that looked more promising

 That would definitely make sense, as you say two would be redundant but does make you wonder how they even got to a point they had two n the pipeline

It's not that unusual, especially with the projects at different networks. In theory you've got a better chance of one of them actually working out. Think of it as the Hollywood equivalent of when WOTC had both the fancy 3D VTT project and Maps in development at the same time, before deciding one wasn't worth putting further resources into
