So my friend and i are having a seemingly co-op ending argument over somthing i feel is not worth arguing about. He as the DM presented me with a thundersword, and gave me the link to the d&d wiki page with description and a picture. on my own time, outside of the game session, i started making a nicer looking sheet for the weapon so i could more conveniently reference it while playing. i found a more realistic picture on google, same color, same lightning bolt shaped blade, same gold hilt. i causually in the car said hey look at this realistic picture of a thundersword i found for a more organized personal reference sheet i am making on my computer. at that point he exploded on me saying i was trying to change what the item looked like mid game and that it was extremely disrespectful. my argument is that i should be free to immagine things slightly different than he does and that i tend to have a looser more abstract imagination. we argued back and forth all day via text and otw home it got so intense he started screaming and throwing things around the car. to which i say, look, i play d&d because i want to have fun and escape reality and all its attention to exact detail. if it creates this kind of anger, i dont want to play with you. i guess im just trying to find out if i really violated some huge boundary of respect or if he is nit picking over a weapon he didn't even create or put any thought into. he just sent me the d&d wiki page and i honesly focused more on the stats and description, and not so much the picture whoever the original poster gave as a reference. here is the link to the d&d wiki page
i dont see where the extreme i cant play with you disrespect idea is comming from. especially since its just a d&d wiki picture i am invisioning in a more realistic way.
Sounds like some crazy, aggro nonsense. As a player, I decide how my character's weapons look. As a DM, if a player wants to use a different image of a weapon, that's absolutely okay. It would be a different story is the appearance of the item was it's whole deal, but that's not the case here. Find a new DM.
I agree with Swan, it's more up to the player with things like that but always nice to get input and collaboration going between players and DM but in the end, with the player, it's their character so their call how they will flavor the character and things like the weapons in an eye towards balance. I have seen things go the whole other direction as well. But Swan is correct, time to find a new DM especially if the current one is not willing to discuss it and meet you in middle somewhere. Goodluck!
