I'm trying to make a spell that merges Goodberry with Alter Self, but I don't want it to be a high Level spell, probably something around 2nd Level.
I was thinking of casting the combined version of them that creates up to "x" number of berries that when eaten gives you the Change Appearance feature from Alter Self. I also want each berry to give the person eating it a full day worth of their physical changes. Plus, the berries last for 30 days at which point they lose their magic.
I was also thinking about temporarily disabling the spell and spell slot equal to 1d6 days per berry created. That way it has a heavy penalty for casting this spell.
Yeah, but then it would be the alter self spell. You are trying make a level 2 spell significantly better without raising its level. Maybe it would be better to make it a magic item instead.
Probably by making it cursed in some manner; otherwise it really is too strong.
Getting rid of the idea that the berries last for more than a day would be a good start at toning it down.
Now, you could make it cost 1 spell slot per berry and then have the effects have the same duration as Alter Self and then it'd be close to being a level 2 spell. Add in that it's a magic item that allows you to sacrifice a level 2 spell slot or higher for one berry and then it's probably OK.
You could make a mask that conveys the effect of disguise self without concentration as long as it is worn and attuned. I think that is the best you can manage on an item that passes for uncommon.
I once considered making an item that was exactly this called mask of selves.
Think of something similar to pretending to be someone else for most of a day. Alter Self can't do that, maybe for 2 hours with 2 castings, but that's it.
Either be a changling, get a hat of disguise, or use a disguise kit. Or some combination of the 3.
If your DM is going to allow you to use a homebrewed spell that is alter self without a time limit, maybe they will just let you use it without a time limit or give you an item that can.
One of the things that makes Alter self powerful is that it has three different effects for the price of only preparing one spell, so one thing you could do is get rid of the Aquatic Adaption and Natural Weapon part of the spell, and make it only have the change appearance part. And if you want to make it cost more you could make it so that it doesn't create the berries, it instead enhances the good berries, that way in order for you to effectively cast it you have to spend a 1st level spell slot to create the berries, and 2nd level spell slot to give the berries the Change Appearance effect.

Any ideas on making it better?
This sounds like something that would be a level 4 spell at least. Maybe as high as level 6.
Effects that reset after x in game days are difficult to track.
Can it be modified in a way to be a 2nd Level spell.

How would you make the magic item to allow this, but still make it low enough Level for a 3rd or 4th Level character.

That sounds reasonable. Any other possible options?

But I am looking to create something that physically changes my character.
Then just use alter self and/or a disguise kit.
But it also needs to last longer than 1 hour.

Although for the sake of balance it should probably only effect one of the berries.
Basically infusing a goodberry with the Change Appearance feature from Alter Self.
