Fighter 3 / Gloom Stalker 5 / Assassin 12 are just one of them. What the most have in common is the 5 Level in Gloom Stalker.
i dont see the point for the 5th level. you want 3 level for the stalker itself and the 4th for the ASi, but the 5th only brings two spell slots and the multiattack what you already get from the rogue. So what are the upside in getting 5 level gloom stalker?
It would appear to be the 2 level 2 spell slots and 4th level 1 spell slot you get from Ranger level 5. Neither Fighter nor Rogue/Assassin give you access to such slots. You would have to weigh this against an additional ASI or Feat from Fighter from level 4, or the Assassin's Impostor feature from level 13, allowing you to establish a flawless false identity at the cost of 7 days and 25 gold.
You get access to this spell slots, but you will have to wait one level more to get the other benefits.
For example: if you start with level 5 in the campaign, i would take ranger 3 for gloom stalker, 1 in rogue and 1 in fighter. if i get to level 6 i can choose to go 4th level in ranger for asi, 2nd in fighter for surge.
i have seen a lot of discussion about this biuld.

Or is this really the wrong order?
The power jump from 4th level ranger to 5th level ranger is pretty massive:
I don't see anywhere that an Assassin Rogue gains extra attack? I'm on my first coffee of the day, so may have missed it.

wow you are absolutly right, i didnt know rogue doesnt get the extra attack. Ok then ranger 5 is a huge different
in that case, gloom stalker 5 is the main priority, followed by fighter 2 rogue 3 ?
I was going to say what stormknight did, and that the ranger can learn 1 level 2 spell spell by swaping out a level 1 spell when it levels up.
Yes, definitely Gloom Stalker 5 first. After that, I'd suggest rogue 4 to get your next ASI/feat.
