Hello everyone. I'm very new to being the DM and I'm beginning to collect the essentials. To be completely honest this is my first thread so I hope it goes over well. But down to the question. What do you guys use at your games? Also where do you guys get your dice and what do you use to hold them. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advanced!
Nowadays I have my laptop (the least important part of my kit, but sometimes handy), my books, a screen, lots of dice, pens, pencils and scratch paper. Paper clips can be surprisingly useful for marking a page in a book or for attaching something to your screen. Usually, whatever adventure I've written down is in a folder so the papers stay in some kind of order. I like to have a sheet with character classes and levels and notes like HP, AC, and Passive Perception. I have a few old minis and a battle map and some dry-erase markers if I need to diagram something, but I do most of it in "theater of the mind." Sometimes I play music on my phone. Once in a long while, I'll make a prop letter or map. I've tried writing notes down in a blank book and using it as a prop to read from during the game. I saw Spencer Crittenden do that on HarmonQuest and I liked the look of it, like you were reading your friends a story, but it's impractical and time-consuming, so I stopped.
I've had my dice for forever, but you can get them at a local game shop, online, or at a Barnes & Noble (in order of my preference). I also have a coin I use as a "d2." Personally, I carry them in the same stereotypical purple Crown Royal bag I always have. As long as they don't get lost, you can carry them in anything you like. I've never needed a dice tray, but if I did, I suppose a cigar box would work fine.

Best of luck!
