my DM gave my fire Grenasi eldritch knight the ability to cast the searing smite spell for completing a back story quest. Is there a way I can add the spell to my casting list without taking paladin levels ?
I was thinking about making a magic item that gave the spell .... is there a better way ?
You would need to make a homebrew version of the spell, and set the class availablity to whichever class you have (Wiz/EK in this case). Remember to enable Homebrew Content on the character so you can add.
If you want to add the smite spell in a way that does not count against your spells known, uses a spell slot when cast, and is always prepared for an Eldritch Knight, you will need to create a homebrew subclass. Create a subclass using Eldritch Knight as a template. You'll see a list of options starting with Class Feature Options, Level Scaling, etc. You need the "Spells" option. Click on "Add a spell". In the first box titled "Spell" enter the smite spell. Scroll down to "Consumes spell slot", put "Yes". For "Counts as known spell" put "No". For "Always prepared" put "Yes". (If your DM gave it to you with that intention, otherwise put "no".)
After you do this, go to your character editor and change your martial archetype from the official Eldritch Knight to whatever you named your version.
Sigvard, thank you for this excellent response. I'm the DM and I gave my bard and cleric spells that they can use that use a spell slot, but don't count against known spells. Would I just do the same for them? Using their current subclass as a template, create a new one, and do the spell building as you have described? Thank you!
Should work for any subclass. Pretty sure they all have those options in the homebrew subclass builder. As long as they are already spellcasters it's any easy addition.

If your GMs cool with it, just add it to your spellbook, they gave it as a reward its unfair for you too have to start multiclassing just to use it.
Philip2580 This was aimed to be more of a mechanical questions of how to do it on DND beyond if its possible.
honestly, i have just made magic items to complete the request.
I just want to tell everyone "happy gaming" and actually mean it. Whatever your game is, just have fun with it, it is after all, just a game.

Wary the wizard who focuses on homebrew, for he can create nightmares that you wouldn't even dream of
Or make a homebrew feat that grants the spell. I have a homebrew feat named "Bonus Spell (DM only)" just for such occasions.
Can you make a spell not count against known spells in this manner?
