Hey all, I'm playing a sorcerer, and I've just gotten Find Familiar in the middle of a campaign, from the Magic Initiate feat. I want to try and cast this before at some point during the adventure, but I'm not sure how to approach doing this without wasting a lot of active adventuring time. Thanks in advance for any help!
The best way would be to time skip it. Maybe agree with your party to spend an extra hour during a rest.
(Technically clerics, druids, paladins, and wizards need to spend several minutes each time they change their spells, but it is usually skipped for convenience).
The "least obstructive" way would be to opportunistically do it during a lull in any party action. You've gotten into town, you've secured your rooms at the inn, but there's still time before nightfall. The party does a soft break to wander around town, poke at things, see what trouble they can get into or others out of. If there's nothing more interesting for you personally to do during this time, use it to summon with Find Familiar.
That could potentially leave you waiting for a long time, though, depending on what the party is doing and the circumstances of the campaign and your DM's plan for the world.
Spending an hour to cast the spell is no more obstructive than "I spend an hour casting find familiar". It shouldn't bother your party members unless you try and do it in the middle of some action. You could even cast it while everyone else is taking a short rest.
