As a recent (last few years) fan of D&D, I have been diving into some of the Sword Coast lore (as that is where most of my DMed sessions are taking place). I came across the Baldur's Gate games in my search. Would you consider this to be an essential game series for D&D fans or something that is outdated and can probably just be left alone?
BG3 is coming this year, so that is certainly not outdated.
As for the first two (and the various additions). I'll say they still are worth playing, but I might be nostalgic. The enhanced edition looks decent (but remember, it's a 20-year old game we are talking about), but the story and "quests" still are great. BG2 is by far my favorite, and I've just played through the first half to get ready for DM'ing on the Sword Coast :-)
What is "outdated" is of course the system. BG1 uses AD&D while BG2 uses D&D3e (if I remember correctly).
As for the story, I think that's quite "canon".
Play them on a computer is my advice. I didn't like the ipad version :-)

Hello everyone,
As a recent (last few years) fan of D&D, I have been diving into some of the Sword Coast lore (as that is where most of my DMed sessions are taking place). I came across the Baldur's Gate games in my search. Would you consider this to be an essential game series for D&D fans or something that is outdated and can probably just be left alone?
Thanks!
