My plan is to get the three core right away. That would give me the vast majority of the mechanical bits. I plan to get and run ToA when that is released and XGtE when that is released. As far as the back catalogue goes VGtM I will probably pick up pretty quickly. For SCAG and the back adventures won't be a huge priority for me, but I am sure I will get them eventually. I expect to get everything over the first year or so.
My plan is to, unfortunately, miss the extra cheap start-up week sale (because a nice night out to celebrate the wife's academic achievement of passing another pair of courses that put her through the ringer is a higher-priority expenditure of what little spare money we have).
So I'll squirrel away $5 or $10 each month, picking things up in the priority order of Monster Manual, Volo's Guide to Monsters, Xanathar's Guide to Everything, Dungeon Master's Guide, Player's Handbook, and Sword coast Adventurer's Guide - and then I might pick up a master tier subscription during whatever time I"m actually running a campaign.
The DM-side of things are higher priority for me because of me using the tools, instead of a stack of books, while at the table running a session. Xanathar's Guide sneaks in as a high priority though because it'll be new stuff for the whole table, and I don't think I'll be buying physical books while the more-useful integrated D&D Beyond versions are available and also more affordable.
Three core under the discount deal because I can't resist a discount and I think it's a good deal. Then I'll make homebrew to fill in the gaps for whatever players need to use with my Master Tier sub and purchase Volo's, SCAG, Xanathar when I can put together the funds to do so. I'm not rich, but a few sacrifices here and there to make my DM'ing life easier and give my players a neat home base online for the campaign will be worth it, IMO.

Wait and see if the Equipment and Spell management functions improve and print functionality before spending money on a product I won't use. After they revealed that the Campaign Management will go live as is has turned me off of the program in general, but I will keep my eyes open and see what happens over the next couple of weeks.
I have a pretty simple strategy. Buy the core rules and VGM one most likely SCAG on day one, oick up XGE as soon as it's available. Pick up adventures in the unlikely event I need them.
buy the three on the sale, i'm unsure on adventures yet -- I think I'd have to get a glimpse of them and the campaign manager in full. I'm hoping LMoP is cheaper than the rest of the adventures (as it is in hard copy) so I can buy it as a "test" to see how everything works (much like it works for the game itself!). If it isn't, I'll wait for an adventure to go on sale and buy that one, again to see what's included and how it works.
My strategy for paying for everything is that I've been setting money aside for quite some time in anticipation of the release. Because pricing is much lower than I expected, I have more available to buy what I need.
Also, our group (six in total) are all long time friends, so everyone will be happy to kick in some cash to pay for it. With the master tier subscription it saves us money in the long term because now we'll only need to buy one copy of a book instead of multiples. It will also save time during sessions because people can read up or reference something in between sessions instead of having to wait until we're together because they don't have a copy of a certain book.
With that in mind, my plan now is to get the core three at sale price along with Volo's.
I'm also going to look at what's available in the individual elements/bundled options. I'm really hoping I can get just the game mechanic things from SCAG (e.g. variant races, archetypes, spells, backgrounds, etc.) and items/monsters from the adventure books (our campaigns are almost entirely homebrew so we have no use for the adventure part). Otherwise, I'll grab SCAG and just homebrew the items from adventures.
I was about to preorder Xanathar's because it was on sale for $30 on Amazon, however I've held off on that and decided to save the money to get it on DDB. If Tomb of Annihilation has mechanical things in it, I'll see if I can grab a bundle without having to pick up the whole adventure.
Ive asked if we could get a list before release of the individual elements/bundles available and their price, since I'm assuming they are already set. Hopefully we can get a peek at what the offerings are.

This for me too. Core 3, plus LMoP and SKT in my case. Then add Volo, Xanathar and SCAG over time. Play it by ear beyond that.
i'll do the same as I did to complete the bundle on Fantasy Grounds. I'll buy the three Core Books today (and probably buy a few bits and pieces to complete characters. Then I'll buy one book a month or so as I can and as any sales happen.
I'll buy LMoP pretty quick since I don't have any other way to get that one. If the format and navigation is such that I can DM from the screen, I'll eventually buy all of the adventures, otherwise it will only be resource books.

Buy the ones on sale while they're on sale and wait for sales for Volo's, SCAG, Xanathar's, and the useful stuff from the adventures.

Getting the sale, master sub, saving to get the rest one book at a time.

Legendary Bundle, Master Tier Subscriber.
I've bought the 3 core rulebooks, and an adventure I plan to run.
I'm thinking of also buying Curse of Strahd, since I'm in the middle of running that, but that'd be 3 times I've paid for it then (Physical, Roll20).
As for catching up, probably a book per fortnight or so, with a view to get the legendary bundle
