DDB and WotC are two different companies. DDB is more akin to a gaming store (or maybe amazon). Much like how your store buys stock from WotC and then must sell it to make back what they spent, DDB bought the license from WotC and must sell licenses/subscriptions to make that money back, plus the development costs and running costs of the site.
That's unfortunate, I play with a group in person and we have already invested. I'm not going to buy everything twice. I guess I understand but, I would probably invest if I could redeem what I already have. Weird that Wotc wouldn't just launch this product themselves. Bad call.

Maybe check around before investing so you know that you have the right product that suits your needs?
D&D Beyond has been around for over 2 years now.
You can also just use your current books. You don't "have" to play digitally.
You can also homebrew what you need for free.

Your first post said you only owned a handful of books. A handful is what I'd consider anywhere from 3-5 books. That isn't a lot in the grand scheme of a full collection. If you want all the books, getting the Legendary Bundle here on Beyond will still save you more money than if you continued buying physical. Particularly if your group does a shared investment as it is possible to share all the books on Beyond within your group using a subscription.
Also, I'll just point out that I started with physical and also own a handful of books. However, it is vitally worth owning the Player's Handbook in both versions at the minimum and that's what I started with. As time moves on, my entire collection is going digital as I DM from Beyond now and use the vast majority of my Character Sheet creation and player's notes off the site as well in other campaigns I'm involved in.
All that said, my physical books still see a lot of use at the table, but the ease and convenience of Beyond cannot be replicated in physical form and is now a MUST for any DM endeavor in my book. Hyperlink tabs, book share ability and the high-resolution maps just make Beyond a great deal and an effective tool for smooth and easy gameplay that reduces page flipping and wasted time looking for the right information. It's all at your fingertips here. So, don't think of repurchases as wasted dollars. They are worth it. Not to mention, any singular book purchase on Beyond is credited towards the eventual purchase of the book Bundles should you decide to more deeply invest in the future. ;)
If you already own a handful of books can they be redeemed for a D&D Beyond digital version?
Nope.
This comes up frequently (more so of late).

Think of it as even if you own all the Harry Potter books they won't give you the DVD's for free.
That is an awesome analogy
I usually compare it to asking a different store for a free copy of the book (since that is literally what they are doing).
Another one is buying a game for your console and then asking Steam for a free copy.

I just pay double, kicked my cocaine habit so this is only marginally more expensive.
