So my DM recently gave my character an item that was specific to my character's class and subclass (Wildfire Druid). It's really cool and has some neat effects. The only issue is that it requires attunement and I think I'm better off with my current items. It also seems like he may be afraid of making it OP but it ended up being a little underwhelming. For example, it allows me to do an additional 2d6 fire damage when attacking while shaped, but with the specification "as long as they make sense and at the DMs discretion" and grants me resistant to fire damage, but only from a non-magical source. This is all fair of him to do, but I think the result is underwhelming. I appreciate him making it, but as of now, I don't think I would want to swap it out. My current items are a ring of protection, a staff of the woodlands, and purple dragon scale-mail. If I were to swap it out, I would probably swap the ring of protection. I don't want to use it, but I also don't want to upset my DM.
He essentially made you a flame tongue weapon with extra resistance, though non-magical fire resist seems meh to me. Not entirely useless, but almost a half-resistance. Its up to you, but i would recommend talking to your DM. Be transparent and they should understand. Maybe youre heading to the elemental plane of fire soon or some circle of hell.
homebrewed magic items are always tricky. I'd definitely just talk to your DM and let them know that you may not end up using the item. I made a homebrewed alcohol for my group once cause some were new and blowing through spell slots like crazy so the alcohol would recover two spells. Instead of using it to recover spells they yeeted it into a fire that the cave boss was standing by. Not what I intended them to do with the item but that's how it is in the world of D&D so I wasn't mad. While they didn't need to discuss there plans with me on this since the item wasn't permanent to begin with, I could see a DM appreciating the constructive criticism/feedback.
Another thought, you can swap out one item that you’re attuned you every short rest just like you can change your spells after every long rest as a Druid. Keep it and use it when it’s the best option for you and use your other items when they’re the best option for you.

Full of rice, beans, and bad ideas.
