I heard from a friend that this toolset would include previous editions of Dungeons and Dragons, is that true?
I've been using the D&D Insider tools for the past year, and while the character builder is fantastic in many ways, it also has a huge amount of problems. (Nearly all of my character sheets cannot be saved to PDFs, as they just result in completely blank PDFs, though they have the correct number of pages)
The D&D Insider tools are obsolete at this point, so I was wondering if there is going to be any support for 4th edition on D&D Beyond. 4th edition is my preferred edition for various reasons that I hope I won't get too much hate for, so I would love to have a fully functional and digital way to play my favorite RPG.

I don't think other editions are on Curse's radar at this time. Right now, it's for sure 5e only. Now... once all the homebrew options are fully onboard, you may be able to use those tools to build characters, magic items, and monsters that are 4e compatible. It seems like it would take a lot of patience, though.

There will be no "backwards compatibility" for D&D Beyond. You can, however, convert older versions of monsters, items, and spells into 5e. :)
A dwarf with a canoe on his back? What could go wrong?
