I've been told that at launch we won't lose anything we currently have access to. If I purchase the players handbook in DDB, what does it give me beyond the current free compendium content? It seems word for word identical.
The SRD is actually somewhat different from the PHB in a few ways. They rewrote some of the sentences as well as used generic names for things like spells using Wizard's IP (Melf, Mordenkainen, etc.).

"Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else's opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation."
The free content on D&D Beyond is from the Basic Rules & SRD.
Here's a quick comparison:
Basic Rules & SRD only include one subclass for each class - PHB gives you 2 or more for each class.
Basic Rules & SRD only include one subrace for each race - PHB gives you 2 for each race.
Basic Rules & SRD include a limited selection of the spells - PHB has all of these spells.
Basic Rules & SRD only include 2 feats (Brawler & the Svirfneblin one) - PHB has a large variety of feats.
Basic Rules & SRD only have a few backgrounds - PHB has a much larger selection of backgrounds.
There are further differences, but those are the main ones that spring to mind.
Not quite. Sverfneblin Magic is from EEPC; BR/SRD includes high and wood elves, hill and mountain dwarves, and lightfoot and stout halflings; dragonborn, half-elves, half-orcs, and tieflings don't have PHB subraces.
