Me and a friend have been wanting to play in a campaign together for a while and have finally joined one. We want to try and make our characters parent and child, with mine as the child. No I don't mean like 9 years old. The parent will just be older, and mine will probably be around 18. We want to incorporate this into our builds but don't know how. Any ideas or suggestions?
Well most of what you're going to do with it will be RP. But there are some obvious things such as: same race or half-race (e.g., both are elves, or parent is full elf, child is half-elf). Same or similar background. Possibly similar alignment although you need to figure out if the kid is going to be a chip off the old block or a rebel. A lot of times kids do the opposite of what parents want.
I would say the most important thing is to work out the relationship first. Is the kid going to go along with what the parent wants, or rebel? Is the kid going to bridle every time the parent tries to tell him what to do? Is the parent going to think of the kid as a "child" even at 18 (parents do this all the time). Is the parent going to tell embarrassing stories to the rest of the party (parents do this all the time also). And so on.

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
Parent can be mage or similar, while child is sorcerer type due to parent's arcane meddling.
Parent can be warlock of the fiend and child is a Tiefling as a result of the pact.
Parent can be specialized martial class while the other is more general as the child doesn't have the experience. Or flip it, as perhaps the child was fortunate to have some formalized training that the parent couldn't receive.
We really like the wizard and sorcerer idea. But now I have to think, what bloodline should me sorcerer be? I'm thinking wild magic, pyromancy, or phoenix. Wild magic for him messing with magic, somehow getting something in his blood or something and passing that down to me, my magic being chaotic because of it. Maybe the father could be an evocation wizard and I get pyromancy because of it, or maybe my father once did something great for a phoenix and the phoenix gave him an unknown gift, but the gift became known once I was born, it being the phoenix bloodline. Which do you guys think sounds best?

Well, I'm not going to recommend options that aren't available on DDB, so pyromancy and Phoenix are out. Maybe storm sorcery and draconic bloodline as replacements.
I would maybe consider one of those 2, but I don't know how those 2 would be able to tie into this.
Phoenix is UA and pyromancy is Ravnica.
Wild magic is official though. And would make sense. Since the father is a wizard, we could say I was exposed to raw magic, resulting in wild magic bloodline.

In my campaign I have a father and two sons. Well they are actual father and sons. they wanted to play as father and sons. I looked at the gnome and said that might be hard to explain.
I see. For me, it's just a friend I call dad. I have no idea why I just started doing so one day and thought it may be fun to play characters with him as a father to mine, lol.

Did I say Ravnica? I meant Kaladesh.
You mean plane shift? While made by WotC staff, it is not considered official content. Basically homebrew. (I really want more though).
Either way, didn't make it into an official book and not in active playtest.
You are right that wild magic is official, which is why I didn't say it wasn't, and yes it fits. Draconic is the closest thing to pyromancer and could maybe be explained as being a side effect from experimentation with Dragon sources spell components. And storm sorcerer is the only one that draws its magic from the elemental planes (mostly air).

I feel like this would be a hilarious team up.
Other than having race at least half the same, not much is required to make this work.

My lunch is over, so that's all for now.

Actually I see how the storm magic could work. Saying I was born during some unnatural extreme weather event
