I am getting it for my bday this weekend from my wife and kids and going to be dming it for them, will I need the dm guide book or can that wait till I deside to do a home brew campaign?
You shouldn't need the DMsGuide for it, I don't think. If you (or more precisely your players) will be building characters on here, you might need to purchase some of the subclasses, as The Essentials kit includes some that are not available for free. But you can purchase subclasses (which are found in the Player's Handbook) individually. It's possible the same thing is true of magic items (which would be in the DMG), but I'm confident they are described in the print version of Dragon of IceSpire Peak, so that's only an issue if you use the tools here for characters. Note: The boxed set includes a code to get the adventure here for free, and 50% off the PHB here.
From the opening paragraph in the Dragon of Icespire Peak Adventure, looks like you'll be fine:
This book is written for the Dungeon Master. It contains a complete Dungeons & Dragons adventure, as well as descriptions for every creature that appears in the adventure. It also teaches you how to run a D&D game.
The other book that accompanies this one (called “the rulebook”) contains the information the players need to create and advance their characters (the adventurers and heroes of the story), as well as the rules you need to adjudicate situations that arise during the adventure.
