So I already have a physical copy of quite a few D&D books, and am now participating in an online campaign, with the character sheets on D&D beyond. Is there a way I could somehow get the site to recognize that I own the books and let me use the backgrounds and other things for my character without having to buy the online versions?
You can either buy what you need on here or use the homebrew tools to recreate what you need for private use.

DDB is owned by Twitch, not Wizards of the Coast. Twitch was given licensing rights to be able to offer this toolset, but they are two different companies, which is why there is no physical to digital translation. (At least this is what was explained to me) It would be cool if the physical books offered a digital code, like blu-rays do, but that is not the case.
Since you are going to do a campaign through here, I would check to see if anyone in your group has a Master subscription. This would allow some resource sharing. Orrrrr...bite the bullet and buy the digital copies. Haha
I promise it doesn't sting so much after the first purchase.
Quick correct to SinisterUrge7: D&D Beyond is owned by Fandom. It used to be owned by Twitch but was bought out by Fandom. Everything else remains the same.

This question gets asked a lot and really there are 2 problems. The first being DDB is not a part of WotC. The second is that there is no unique identifier/code on any physical book to prove you own it (all books of the same printing have the same serial number and you can Google them).
