Hi all. I'm excited about the Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden campaign book coming out. And I wanted to ask folks for interesting character ideas that might fit into such a winter-swept setting? I'm interested in both story driven ideas and well as builds that might do well within the Icewind Dale setting. What would you play?
Would you play a rugged tracker who's an expert in survival and fighting in the harsh arctic environment? (ranger/rogue with natural explorer and expertise)
Or perhaps a goliath with a bit of frost giant blood in their veins, who grew up on hunting in the spine of the world? (goliath archer)
Or maybe a city guard or investigator who's sight can pierce the darkness of the long nights? (warlock with devil's sight)
Or an ice sailor and fisherman who can turn into a fish themselves to swim beneath the icy lakes to hunt for knucklehead trout? (druid)
I think if I were to play it, I would play a character who almost became a warlock, attempting to make a pact with an otherworldly creature, but eventually backed away after having a life-scarring life experience, probably related to the patron (Haven't decided what the patron would be yet, maybe Auril).
The character, after this life-scarring event, would be traumatized and started travelling the world in search for something to fill their life with. They would have came across a circle of druids who took him in, restored balance to his mental state, and taught him how to bond deeply with nature (becoming a druid).
I would probably be Circle of Wildfire, and my race as a half-elf or wood elf.

Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
Actually I have only ever played a druid and that was a moon druid so I don't know. I am definitely due to play one soon, but either barbarian or paladin is next. I try to rotate through them all. My favourites are rogue and warlock though.
I'd go a Winter Eladrin Sorcerer who was frozen in ice for hundreds of years, and was awoken by the party. I don't know why that seems so fun, it just does.

Love the frozen character idea. Seems very fitting.
I haven't played an artificer yet and I want to try out paladin and bard again, so probably one of those. But that's more of a general when I join a new game thing.
I am actually in a campaign that hopes to start up when the new adventure is released! My character is a Wildhunt Shifter Ranger (who's beast within is a polar bear ;)) and has the outlander background. I'm relatively new to D&D and I figured I should get all the help I can get, if I want to make it past the first session.
Tempest cleric of Auril who wants to bring the blessings of the goddess to the infidels of the Ten Towns.

Any time an unfathomably powerful entity sweeps in and offers godlike rewards in return for just a few teensy favors, it’s a scam. Unless it’s me. I’d never lie to you, reader dearest.

ooo that sounds so cool! I was half-tempted to go a spiritual route too. Polar bears are considered to be a bit spirtual tho, so hopefully I can get away with it :P
I'm going with a human fighter, rogue, or maybe ranger...I think a more "ordinary" character will fit in well with the modern horror feel that I'm so excited about. I want someone who's less a hero and more a gifted regular guy trying to survive and make some coin to help his family, someone who could really be in a fantasy version of The Shining.
A goliath survivor of some kind might be cool. If the DM allows it and the UA is still available by that point, I'd go with fey wanderer as the subclass for a bit of a change.
Awesome ideas all. I've heard there are a tribe of Goliath in ID:RotFM, especially since Goliath are well adapted to mountain living. And playing a servant of Auril could also squarely put you as a spy in the group as well. (Though perhaps not great for party unity.).
I've been thinking more about what I'd play myself. For a class, a Gloom Stalker ranger seems like it would fit right in. If the land is indeed plunged into the darkness of a long winter, their sight and stealth might perfectly fit in. I can imagine a wilderness hermit, hunter, tracker who shuns cities. The rangers natural explorer ability works well too. Throw in some rogue levels for expertise in stealth and survival in the arctic climate. Perhaps also a master of the bow.
Or perhaps throw in some druid levels to shift into animals more suited to the outdoors when needed. As for Race, a shifter sees like it would be well suited for the outdoors as well. Perhaps a cross between Logan, Strider, and Drizzt.
Edit: Perhaps a wolf is the spirit animal of this character, either their Shifter ancestry, or druidic affinity.
My character is a half elf Druid (Druids are absolutely amazing for this campaign). I chose one of the character secrets from the campaign, the “raised by yeti” and it’s hilarious and so much fun!
Basically as a small child she was lost in a storm and separated from her parents and then a yeti found her, saved her, and then raised her as its own.

Hmm, I have yet to run a druid in 5E. Seems like an appropriate place to do so.
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
Druid of the land (Desert). :)

Wildfire would certainly be interesting in a snowy environment. :)
Oh, I never thought about a Druid of the Land. Arctic druids have some good spells too. Perhaps a member of a barbarian tribe?
It would. The character would probably focus on support, and summon fire to provide warmth when needed.

100% Septimus. My Levistus Tiefling hex blade warlock. so much fun in cult, but doubly so in an ice themed setting.

An archaeologist searching for lost civilizations.
Maybe a rock gnome gloom stalker.
