Recently my friends and I wanted to start up a new campaign, previously we only had done a non-dnd homebrew.
I like collecting things so I already had a good few books of dnd that I would occasionally read a bit of. Of which I had DotMM. I told my group that and they choose it as our book to run. As I've been prepping the session 0 Ive come to learn that its a sequel book, and I dont own the first. I wouldnt mind running this on its own, but it doesnt provide any information of the starting city of waterdeep. So:
Is it possible to play on its own? Can I play it alone but need the first book for reference? Do I have to play the first book first?

Yes, the first book has very little follow up in the second book, and they're separate stories.
You can play it alone, and it is useful to have the first book for reference on the city above, but not necessary.
