I recently mad a level 5 bard, and once completed I noticed that I was at least half proficient in EVERY skill. I was fully proficient in Athletics, Acrobatics, Arcana, Deception, Perception, Performance, Sleight of Hand and Stealth, and I was 'expert' in Insight and Persuasion. Can somebody please explain this to me?
If you take the Lore Bard College and start as a half-elf, you begin with something like 7 proficient skills. At level 2 you receive Jack of all Trades and this gives you half of your proficiency bonus to any skill check (including initiative) that you do not already have proficiency. Then, at level 3 you gain proficiency with another three skills and you get to improve two proficient skills into expertise. Expertise allows you to count your proficiency bonus twice for that skill in addition to your ability score modifier.
My level 5 bard is in this position and I can't wait to get to level 6 where I receive the extra Magical Secrets.
He is a half-elf, proficient in Acrobatics, Animal Handling, Deception, Insight, Intimidation, Perception, Performance, Persuasion, Sleight of Hand & Stealth. I can out skill anyone in anything except strength checks or the expertise that our rogue selected in Sleight of Hand and Stealth. Essentially I describe it as the Bard is the master of civilized encounters but a supporting actor in combat encounters. But his support can be pretty magnificent if you figure it out. One of the best Bard abilities is Cutting Words, trust me.
