There is a "My Subscription" Page. Does this mean we have to buy digital versions of the books?
If so, do I need to buy the digital versionif I want to run a curse of strahd campaign and already own the physical book?
I think 'My Subscriptions' is associated to the 'Forum' threads you're subscribed to! (Essentially places where you post and want to get notifications form).

My hope is we can get a monthly (yearly with discount get a years worth of access for the price of a couple books) subscription model. Something like spotify prices 4-8 dollars a month with some 'quarterly' new content. Everyone wins WoTC gets ~100 dollars a year and we get relatively low cost access to content and tools.
Maybe even throw in a 'discount' ~10% of MSRP for books store attached to the subscription price. That would be nice too.
Like many others on here I own all of the books for 5th edition books so far and worried about the final cost of this product. This would be the main factor for me using a site like this in the future. One idea would be to have a code in the book to unlock the digital content on this site could be an option worth looking into. However that is something way down the line to think about just worried the system when its up will cost a fair bit of £'s
Would be interested in hearing from the dev on the business model before spending time into this and going back to the books.
I'd hate it if they priced it like Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds. Their pricing is awful. It would force me to choose between buying books at a game store or using D&D Beyond. Pitting local game stores against digital content providers is a terrible way to treat stores that support D&D.
The physical code thing is very unrealistic. Look at how many gamers don't even blink at the idea of stealing PDFs. Snapping a picture of the code from the book in the store is even easier. People steal gift cards the same way.
Setting up something for stores to request codes when a purchase is made is another level of overhead for stores. If Wizards doesn't trust its customers enough to sell them PDFs then they're going to require a frustrating level of policing and verification for a system like that. It also requires a level of caring that some stores don't possess. One store jumped at the idea of using Bits and Mortar, another store signed up but didn't care enough to figure out how to get me the PDFs.
A small monthly subscription will be needed to manage more than a handful of characters and to enable more advanced features, like homebrew content integration. At this time, we don’t know exactly how much the subscription will cost, but please continue to check dndbeyond.com for the most up-to-date announcements and information.
How much will it cost?
We don’t have exact pricing nailed-down, but you will be able to buy official digital D&D content for all fifth edition products with flexible purchase options. You can pay only for the D&D content you need. If you only play fighters, for example, you’ll be able to just pick up the stuff you need to track swinging that two-handed sword.
So it looks like there will be a monthly cost as well as paid modules

Life before death. Strength before weakness. Journey before destination. I will protect those who cannot protect themselves, I will protect even those I hate so long as it is right.
Thank you for finding this info. I'm quite interested in viewing the setup they have proposed, as well as if you can link player characters to a DM for visibility purposes.
As for the digital content, I'm hoping that relays to downloadable PDFs and not only to reside on the Plane of Smartphone.

My guess it will be "unlocked" on your phone to view so you don't have a PDF but you have more access to data. I am just guessing

I, personally, have spent quite a bit on Fantasy Grounds digital content which I really hope will be available to me. Having to re-buy everything again might be a deal breaker.
Very curious to hear the general plan for pricing. And I like the idea for a code, just because some few people will abuse it doesn't mean it won't benefit vastly more people. Gift cards are still around and in use.
Right not it seems they are going to do one time fees for books and modules of data, And then a subscription for Char sheets being stored on the servers. Depending on how good the system used to manage Char sheets and how it integrates into the app for real play I would not mind a monthly fee.
But GM, to player and Player to App integration is going to be a make or break point for me.

I recommend giving up hope for 5th edition PDFs prior to the release of 6th edition. Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment. If Wizards isn't going to sell us PDFs through the PDF selling service it already has (DM's Guild/DrivethruRPG) then they're not going to do it through a different special service. D&D Beyond is going to be in the form you see here—a web interface, and later a mobile app serving up similar content in a similar fashion.
The "buy it in pieces" thing is the same line we got from Fantasy Grounds and look at their outrageous pricing. They should do subscription or piecemeal, not both. As long as we're subscribed we should get access to everything.
I get that this service will have to cost money. As long as Wizards is in business and making money, we, the fans, get new/updated stuff. However, I'm 34 and a father of 3. I have only recently since the release of 5E got back into table top games after about 15 years of not playing. One of the selling points to my wife was: aside from the 3 core book, this won't cost any more money. So far, I like the look and layout, and I have high hopes for the rest of the release, but when time comes to pay, a modest lifetime membership option would be great. So far, it looks like I can do a lot of the functionality of this app with Game Master 5 app that only costs $2 or $3, but i have to add everything not in the SRD manually. I would like to use an app directly from Wizards instead of a 3rd party app and I would have no problem paying for it, but if the cost is too much, I probably won't. I think this should be something to be taken in consideration when you decide on the price.

I have similar concerns as you, and definitely love the idea of including codes with physical books. Just wanted to give you some support on the idea.

D&D Dungeon Master - now at a price premium! :D

Hmm nice find, it's always good to know what direction developers have in mind.

Depending on the payment model, I would love to have the option for a Lifetime Subscription similar to Fantasy Grounds, etc.
Personally, I just dislike little monthly charges that tend to add up with all the other little monthly charges from things that interest me.
DnD is something I feel confident in paying "up front" since it's not going anywhere and (hopefully) neither is my interest.

I wonder if there is going to be an option to save the character locally or to a dropbox.
That would be nice
I'm not stupid. I'm just unlucky when I'm thinking.
I think tiered is the way to go. A free service for all and a paid service for hardcore users

a one time fee would be great.

I don't mind paying a subscription but there's zero chance I'll pay for digital versions of the books I already own. It's just not worth it.
