Okay instead of just thinking this won't work.. why don't I try to add a few ideas of how they could check book purchases..
Purchased on Amazon
erm... everything else I can think of right now is putting to much on local shops while being to easy to defeat...

I think this worries a lot of us, not because we don't want to spend money on great items, but more that we don't want to double (or triple) spend on items we already have. One time use codes sealed inside the book cover would be the easiest way to move forward but doesn't help fans that already have all the books. A $4 monthly sub works pretty well as most of us could drop a pack of smokes or a few sodas and get the great content updates.
A small monthly subscription will be needed to manage more than a handful of characters and to enable more advanced features, like homebrew content integration. At this time, we don’t know exactly how much the subscription will cost, but please continue to check dndbeyond.com for the most up-to-date announcements and information.
How much will it cost?
We don’t have exact pricing nailed-down, but you will be able to buy official digital D&D content for all fifth edition products with flexible purchase options. You can pay only for the D&D content you need. If you only play fighters, for example, you’ll be able to just pick up the stuff you need to track swinging that two-handed sword.

I was going to say that as well, perhaps microtransactions to get more material

Check out my podcast! What, you had something better to do? Have you ever heard something interesting and thought "How have they not made a movie about this yet?" Well, so have we.
I was also thinking on this possibility (to avoid paying twice for the content from books that you already own). Looks that present the real book on a store, would be the only way that can guarantee 100% that it won't be used by someone else besides the real book owner.
My only question about this is why would you have to take it somewhere else to get it checked? Can the code (or whatever would be used) be printed or placed inside the book and have the book sealed or packaged (seran wrap even) and then if the book packaging is opened then don't but it. If it is there should be a way for the stores to check if it is still a valid code.
I wasn't talking about new books that they print in the future, I was talking about people that have bought books already, who don't want to have to buy the content again to use it here. The books that have already been printed don't have a code in for this, and so I was trying to figure out how these 'codeless' books can be turned into 'coded' books.

Understood but there has already been a post that all content currently included at the moment will be free to use for everyone upon release. I do not have the link handy but it was said (my the main editor) that the current content will be free. With that I do not see why we would need that for the current books

You are not wise enough to fear me as I should be feared. You do not know the first note of the music that moves me.
I will say- I don't mind what it is, I just want the pricing to be relatively cheap, given that it sounds as if i'll have to buy content packs to add the material to the game in the first place, but also need a subscription for character slots and homebrew (of which we use a lot).
5 dollar a month sub for slots and homebrew and 10-20$ per book? you'll have a customer for life
10-15 dollar sub with 40 (retail) per book? yeah not happening
I'm sure a lot of folks feel the same- it needs to be something that I would be willing to use alongside the books I already buy, ideally at a lower price point, volume will help make up the difference in profits.
It's easy to hypothesize fees and subscriptions before we know what services will be offered. Will they provide only knowledge resources and personal character reference? Will they provide a way to link characters from multiple accounts for a central game? Can a DM view the sheets of his players from his/her mobile device?
Many different aspects will warrant different price points. Until we have a solid product/service, there cannot be much said in what is or is not an appropriate business model.

This is very true,
If all the features that are in my head are included then I will be happy to open my wallet and throw my credit cards at the screen.

The only content included on the site at the moment (and possibly for the entirety of the beta) is the SRD content. This is sort of like "5e lite": it has enough content to play a game, but it's missing a lot of options from the full rules - class archetypes, races, certain monsters, spells, items - which are in the PHB, DMG, or MM. Then there are the supplements - Sword Coast Adventure Guide, Volo's Guide to Monsters - which also aren't included in the site currently, and provide lots of extra content.
These are all books that have already been published and sold, and are owned by many players/DMs, and none of them are going to be able to be available for free on D&D:Beyond. It's these books, which are already printed and in customers hands, that I want to be able to add codes to, so that people aren't paying for that extra content another time.
(In actuality, I think it would be fair to have some charge for getting your book 'coded' to unlock the content online, but a much smaller fee, around £5 or less per book maybe.)
I'm fine to pay a subscription to access everything, but I refuse to buy any content again. I've already bought everything twice and I just won't do it again. WotC need to solve this rather than burning their loyal customers.

This is about my price point as well. There also needs to be codes in future books enabling digital access.
I will frown a lot but possibly still use the service if the $5/m fee is required even just to access individually purchased content, locking away character slots and such behind that fee is fine, but I wont be happy if books or other content I pay for separately require me to maintain the subscription to access.
The idea of specific subsections of books being purchasable is very intriguing, and I could see purchasing some things piecemeal even if the total price was higher doing it that way (for example I am only interested in character options, so would love to be able to purchase just those and leave out settings, monsters, etc). Pricing for those is a little harder to place. I'd love to see ~$2.99 for the base price with potentially some variance for larger or smaller blocks of content. I'd be all over that.
It's so hard to talk about how much this is going to cost or what is reasonable without knowing precisely what the product itself will entail.
I know we're in Beta, but they need to get ahead of this and give us detailed information - as well as delivering it quickly because this is something we've been begging for since 5th edition was released and that was years ago.

I've seen some generators get through TOS by saying "Refer to Page ### of the BlahBlah Book" for any description on skills, feats, backgrounds, etc. Maybe have that free for all players and allow the flavor text and descriptions for those that are willing to pay for it.
I'm not doing a subscription, only willing to do a one-time fee and I get all I need to build characters and encounters. If new books come out down the line and they have to be bought, I can choose to at that time but for a one-time fee I should get the PHB, DMG and MM as they have been out a while already.

I still have my DnD Next subscription going. O.o
Yes... I still occasionally play 4th Edition. It makes me feel like the cash I invested in miniatures is getting some use.
I don't mind spending at least as much on these tools.

I would really hope that this content is offered at a one-time price, like the original source material is.

As long as its justified and there is support than charging for this would be totally worth it.
