So the argument between me and the DM cooled down and he handed over the reign to me. Which was weird and a complete surprise, because I was already sure that I had to leave. But he told me about burn-out sydroms and that he looked forward to play again.
So. Now I am the DM. The girl who was asked to leave however still has doubts whether she wants to stay. Some players want to keep their characters, others want to change stuff or make completely new characters. So I inherited something beautiful but also a mess.
I could use advice on how to proceed, but I'll open a new thread for that. For now: viva la revolution!
Do a diagnostic. Run a short low level adventure with brand new PCs that will last 3 to 5 sessions. Tell them it is a chance to clear the palette, and that you want to try out a few things with your DM style and see how they like it before you start something longer. This will give you a chance to get to know the players as your players, and give them a chance to experiment with different types of PCs. Don't make much of a plan for the future until you see how that goes.

Starting afresh will definitely be the better idea.
