So, a bag of holding contains a pocket dimension used to store items and such. My question is this: if a villain somehow knows what one of the objects is inside the bag of holding, could they possibly cast plane shift or maybe Wish, to access that pocket dimension and obtain said item?
With Wish they could do almost anything - and suffer consequences for doing so depending on the Wish. With Plane Shift no - it only takes people to planes of existence. Pocket dimensions and demiplanes don't really count - and even if they did - they would need a Tuning Fork attuned to the specific pocket dimension within that specific Bag of Holding - and I can't imagine how they would get it without a Wish spell or stealing the bag - in which case they could just take the item out or turn the bag inside out to get everything out.
From the DMG under Demiplanes, which seems like it could similarly apply to the extradimensional space of a bag of holding:
"Demiplanes are extradimensional spaces that come into being by a variety of means and boast their own physical laws. Some are created by spells. Others exist naturally, as folds of reality pinched off from the rest of the multiverse. Theoretically, a plane shift spell can carry travelers to a demiplane, but the proper frequency required for the tuning fork would be extremely hard to acquire. The gate spell is more reliable, assuming the caster knows of the demiplane."
With wish you could do whatever you want (DM dependent) so it’s a reasonable option, but would also suffer the stress of casting the wish spell to produce any effect other than duplicating another spell. And Maybe losing the ability to cast wish forever. Plane shift wouldn’t work because it’s not a plane of existence , just an extra-dimensional space. And the space is only a 2 ft x 4 ft cylinder. Thats 12.6 cubic feet. Not even big enough for a medium creature to teleport into anyways. (But a small creature may fit). A better option might be to just have them create their own spell that allows them to reach into an extra dimensional space if they knew the contents. Kinda like how Night Hags search the ethereal plane looking for Leomunds Secret Chests to rob. Seems like the kind of spell a bad guy would use. That’s the beauty of the game. You are free to make whatever spell you like.
Could also try looking at a Boggle‘s Dimensional Rift ability. Might be a way a DM could use that for inspiration. It has more of a feel like reaching into the bag to take something.

Maybe the tuning of the demiplane is known by the creator of the bag. And if there were one prolific crafter of bags of holding, a bad guy could search their archives or kidnap and sweat them for the frequencies to dozens or hundreds of such bags.
Thanks for all the replies everyone. I'm the DM in this game, and the bag of holding the party was given was given to them by their guildmaster. However, their guildmaster is secretly a member of the cult seeking to revive the BBEG. I was thinking, since they essentially got the BOH from the villains, the villains may have some kind of "back door" in them.
I thought there was an item wherein two bags were linked. Maybe as an artificer talent? I can't find it now, but there is no reason why you couldn't have it as a DM.
So party gets a bag of holding that is twinned to the guildmaster bag of holding. What goes in one can be accessed through the other.
Could also be used to frame them for murder if you want. Or maybe frame them for something else? At the end of the day the PCs are likely to get a hold of both - and this may cause some interesting shenanigans, but that is what D&D is about!

I love bag of holding questions!
Would a teleport spell work? Or something like misty step or dimension door?
Even if you can get inside the Bag, can you interact with the objects inside?
Also don't get me started on questions about the air inside...

According to the rules, there is a limited amount of air in a bag of holding.
In addition, you need to know what is it in in order to pull it out.
So, if something died in a bag, and nobody knew what it was, it couldn't be removed, causing everything else in the bag to reek of dead thing. Yes?

You may not be able to pull it out specifically, but you can always turn it inside out and dump everything out.

You might be thinking of the thing in the Acq Inc book. They have something like that.
Could be - thanks. Was going to bug me otherwise.
Not a huge Acq Inc person, but I do own and have read the book, so you are probably right. Appreciate the response.
