My Artificer/Battle Smith is going to be a Cartographer riding around on his Steel Defender (he's Goblin-sized). Once I get the Homunculus built, my plan is to have him sitting on my shoulder drawing maps while we travel.
And for the life of me, I can't think of a name!
The character is named Gisborn Mortimer III or Gizmo for short. His Steel Defender will be named Harley.
Yes, he's more built for fun than being optimal but I want a name for the Homunculus that fits. Suggestions?
1) Homer (playwrite or Simpson. The alliteration tickles me.)
2) Ibn (Batuda), (Marco) Polo, or Hero(ditus) (All three were famous people who wrote about their travels in the ancent world. Very on point. Plus Ibn is almost IBM which, y'know, an artificer, computers, and Styx's Mr. Roboto.)
My Wizard has one that stays in a library to find information he may need as he travels. Name him Ghewgall (yes, pronounced google). Since he's a cartographer, you could name him Magellan or Garmin.
The only two names that come to my mind are: Inkblot (Not quite intelligent enough to be Rorshach) and B.B.R (Bender Bending Rodríguez for Futurama fans)

Homer is considered the founding father of geography; he never created a map though, but the word homer has a bit of similarity to homing (as in, navigating or guiding).
Anaximander is considered by many to be the first map maker - he created what is thought to be the first map of the world.
Abraham Ortelius was the creator of the first modern (well, 16th century) atlas; a contemporary of his was Gerardus Mercator, dubbed the father of modern mapmaking.
edit: if you're looking for a more Anglosaxon-sounding name to go with your character's and his Steel Defender's, James Rennell is quite famous in geographical circles for conducting the first comprehensive geographical survey of much of India, resulting in more accurate and detailed maps than were available for most of Europe at the time.

I love this! While he's drawing I'll say 'Okay Ghewgall' and he'll know to stop and pay attention!
