Sorry if this is absolutely ancient news. Tasha's Cauldron of Everything gives one of the options for obtaining your Sorcerer's Aberrant Mind powers as obtaining them from a childhood imaginary friend who looks like a platypus. Is this a throwback to the Thought Eater? I just thought it was interesting as the Thought Eater is one of the most widely mocked monsters in Dnd's history by internet articles. While sometimes those articles can be funny a lot of times they are inaccurate (such as thinking Dnd came up with the Hippocamp/Hippocampus and not that it was preexisting mythological Greek creation) and mistaking absolute monsters like the Gelatinous Cube, Atropal and Demilich as unintimidating. I wouldn't be shocked if Thought Eaters eventually made it in as the Stench Kow is in that same category of ridicule and it was placed in Volo's. Are there any others here that would be stoked if the underweight astral platypuses made a comeback?
In all seriousness, I want these to return. They should be CR 1/2 or lower so we can use the Sidekick rules from Tasha's on them and then we can have a pet platypus.
They die if they stay too long in the material plane so they wouldn't work as sidekicks, unfortunately. I'm thinking of having one in a campaign I am running that a Kuo-Toa NPC talks to (as they can see into the ethereal plane). Everyone thinks the Kuo-Toa is just nuts with an imaginary friend who talks to himself.
Intellect Devourers, Mind Flayers, and Thought Eaters are pretty much synonymous in the english language... but not in D&D.

"An Astral Platypus? PERRY THE ASTRAL PLATYPUS?!"

Aw, that's too bad. Name the Kuo-Toa after a Phineas and Ferb character, for extra Perry energy.
😄 LOL!
Yes! I also noticed this! I love the astral platapus that eats minds.
Please check out my homebrew, I would appreciate feedback:
Spells, Monsters, Subclasses, Races, Arcknight Class, Occultist Class, World, Enigmatic Esoterica forms
If it does make it's way in, I am absolutely, 100% adding Doofenschmirtz to my campaign as an artificer.
Obviously an Artillerist, right?

With his cannoninator?
Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
Obviously :)
And Arcane Firearminator
I mean, the Eldritch Cannons even come with their own self destruct buttons if you get high enough level.

I thought it was a reference to Eberron and how a bunch of psions there have a link to dream creatures as part of their power set.
I thought he'd be a Battlesmith so his Iron Defender could be Norm, but this seems like a discussion for another day.
