Hello everyone! I have made a riddle for my campaign, and I'd like to get a feel for whether it's too cryptic or too easy. The riddle opens a door which is bonus to the plot, so it can be abandoned and the story progress.
After making your way through the cave, you find a side chamber which appears to be a washroom. there is a small stone basin into which a trickle of water flows, and on one wall is a circular carved stone door which features an upside down, hollow goblet held by an upside down dwarf on its surface. To either side of the door are lit torches in sconces. The floor is flat, rough stone slabs and the ceiling arches up with brick arches at either end, with the curved plaster ceiling being 10ft high. Above the door is carved the words:
"One change of mates would be reversed
the last of teams should come in first
to fill my cup and quench my thirst."
The door doesn't move or rotate if forced.
Please put your responses to this riddle in a spoiler so that others can have a go! And if you've seen this one in the DM's only section, please don't cheat!
First thing I would try as a player is see if the door can be rotated to put the dwarf and goblet right side up.
Not sure for the last of teams. Really got nothing for that tidbit.
Would try filling the cup if the door rotates and quench the fires with some of the water.
Other crazy ideas might involve standing on my head and see if my new perspective changes anything

"Where words fail, swords prevail. Where blood is spilled, my cup is filled" -Cartaphilus
"I have found the answer to the meaning of life. You ask me what the answer is? You already know what the answer to life is. You fear it more than the strike of a viper, the ravages of disease, the ire of a lover. The answer is always death. But death is a gentle mistress with a sweet embrace, and you owe her a debt of restitution. Life is not a gift, it is a loan."
The answer to the riddle is Steam so I suppose they should pour water into the basin, boil it (use the torches somehow?) and let it evaporate into the upside-down chalice. Doesn't seem too hard.
Yeah Steam, I'd want to try the torch in the upside down goblet first, to see if that makes the trickle change to a proper flow and fill the basin - my first thought

D&D, Youth Work and the Priesthood sadly do not typically interact... I do what I can!
Well done to those who said to fill the goblet with steam, that's the right answer! Either by putting a torch underneath and dousing it with water to make steam, or by boiling the water in a container, or any other means by which to fill the goblet with steam!
When the goblet is filled, the door starts to rotate, and as it does so the steam pours up from the goblet into the mouth of the dwarf. When they are upright, the door swings gently free on its hinges, and can be opened.
Thus far it's looking like it's suitably cryptic, and that I need to up my description as it sounds like Cyrasil pictured it with the basin underneath the goblet, with water trickling out of the goblet. The door is on a different wall to the basin.

I have just added that the door doesn't rotate if forced either, I'm afraid for now that door's staying closed for you right now!

Steam
