I need some help making a 2 handed axe wielding madman. I wanted to see other idea for it rather than just Barbarian. Was hoping you could help me out. Only requirement be that it uses a 2 handed axe. So valor bard or a monk would work just as well as a fighter or ranger.
How about: Bugbear (as you get extra reach, darkvision, basic sneak attack and buff to strength and Dex), Any Background you like, go single class Ranger/Hunter with Defense fighting style, taking Colossus Slayer, Escape the Horde, Whirlwind Attack and Evasion for hunter abilities and 2x Humanoids for starting favoured Enemies and "urban" for Natural Explorer, weapon of choice is a glaive (because its a longer version of an axe) and play it like an axe weilding version of Judge Dredd or the Punisher, stalking the streets and bringing vigilante justice.

Tortle Twilight Cleric. Carries a two-handed greataxe and has another one for his spiritual weapon. Focus on buff spells rather than debuffs, so Str and possibly Con can get higher stats assigned than Wis. Guardian of the wetlands, mistrusts civilization. Has a pet rock he picked up because its shape and texture remind him of his mother's shell. Enjoys hot springs, soaking in the sun, and decorating his shield with hand-crafted fetishes dedicated to Silvanus. Suggested background: Fisher or Outlander.

Want to start playing but don't have anyone to play with? You can try these options: [link].
The madman bit you can RP, you don't need anything mechanical in your design. So why not just roll a half orc champion fighter for those juicy crits and lots of ASIs for feats and stat maxing?
Knowing all you have to do is run in and swing that big axe every round (let your companions deal with the boring stuff like talking to NPCs, tracking etc!) means you can really commit to the that madman RP!
Add in a character obsession with finding a Vorpal Greataxe and a supportive GM and let the dice and heads roll!
That's really cool. I've never thought about the polearm reflavor either. Being historically that there are some really long axes. 15 ft attack range would be pretty crazy.
