First Edition or Basic D&D - proper games for proper men -
You had 3 classes - Not 4 or 8 - 3 let me explain why - Mage (Weak starting of World Breaking at higher levels), Cleric (healing factory / Balanced), Fighter (Strong to start Weak at Higher levels) are usable
Thief (Useless at low levels / Weak at higher levels) was a NPC henchman class you 'hired' and used to trigger traps generally you never need to pay them or you could reclaim there wages...after discovery of a trap and lets just say your 15% chance detect trap roll was successful this would give them a 10% disable trap roll chance -
The others Monk/Bard whatever - no one - no one who rolled dice in front of others ever got high enough -
1d4 hp and insta death when your hit /any hit and with an AC that means most stuff will hit -
Stats which made for cunning survivors not dumb hero's - roll 3d6 and thats your stats sure your constitution is 4 you still have 1hp more each level so no complaints -
Backstories - For wimps - you might go through 6 characters in a session

Advanced dugeons & dragons - around 1980.. when my Wizard hit -10 AC thanks to stacked items. That broke a lot of stuff but the campaign was set in Greyhawk so it naturally turned into an epic political struggle between the factions with us eventually pissing everyone off :)

Greyhawk - what a great setting the struggles and factions - my fav the Great Kingdom - and yes if you survive you can become a godlike in power - and perhaps a tyrant to rival those of the Great Kingdom
And none of this modern going up 2 levels in an afternoon.......
I remember playing an Elf fighter every weekend for 2 years and just scraping through to 5th level, which I believe was the maximum level for an Elf!!
You survived 2 years .... I remember loosing so many characters don't think any really lasted more than 8 sessions but can't be sure ... I think 6 in one day, certainly 2 in an hour many times, i remember they only got personalities after a few sessions. And the henchmen losses were uncountable
It was Bushido not D&D but my fav death was when my Yakuza friend was eaten when wading through a caves pool by albino crabs, poor fool didn't even see his opponent never got a chance to react. He'd got a story, made friends was really on the up...lol
Talking of leveling up I had the Basic D&D Gazetteer series which i felt is still amazing and in one there was a gold to experience magic item/machine, it looked like an outside privy and created skeleton after skeleton which you paid to kill in some way - I thought that was pulling a lever and you level up from the experience of defeating it - (perhaps its like getting a degree in a modern university)
Geordie, like English, but cooler.
