Been a long time since I've been able to play a D&D session. I've only recently discovered D&D Beyond & have been seriously jonesing for a game since.
Discord: ArokhX#7695
Age: Adult (Well over 18)
D&D Experience: Some - Mostly older edition based video games (Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights, etc). The last actual tabletop game I was in was a long time ago. Probably best to consider myself in the novice area of experience as 5e is still relatively new for me.
What I love/hate in my sessions:
Love: Triumphant victories despite the odds, good party synergies, laying waste to the evils of the land, interesting (but brief) character backstories & world lore.
Hate: Too much downtime with no progression. I love having down time for party shenanigans, but when all the party does is wait around for something to happen without taking initiative makes for boring game sessions.
My preferred campaign type: Roleplay, Combat, Exploring, NPC interaction, Immersive stories. All with moderation. My favorite location is Faerun & I prefer to start at level 1.
Roleplay should be the bread-n-butter of any D&D campaign. Social interaction between the players is a big reason why we all play this game.
Love combat encounters, however they shouldn't take up the majority of the session unless otherwise required to advance the plot.
Exploration and party members relying on each other to navigate the world can make for some of the most interesting character developments and open world encounters.
Social interactions with the inhabitants of the story can lead to some entertaining and/or funnier moments in a campaign. Plus, It always gives the CHA based characters a time to shine, and invites lots of roleplay opportunities.
When A DM puts in the effort to create a deep world with interesting locations and evolving stories, it is truly a pleasure to be part of their tale.
Other (anything else): I'm a fan of multiclassing my characters. I generally like to do this involving roleplay/story related events during the campaign. Always like to work with the DM to find interesting ways to do this during the course of the story.
I like the game to remain mostly played seriously. The odd comic relief moment is more than welcome, but not to the point where we're playing a story at the ridiculousness levels akin to a Monty Python skit.
Available Times: I work a day job, so best times for me would be the weekends. Saturday afternoon/evening & Sunday afternoon (EST). Prefer game sessions to be 3-4 hours once every weekend. Session length can certainly go longer is everyone is having a good time and wants to continue. Friday evenings are open as well.
Lastly: This would be my first time joining a game via online, so this is all new to me. Not sure what tools or services are needed to play a game, but I would love to use D&D Beyond & I have Tabletop simulator on Steam. Ultimately, I would be relying on the DMs experience to answer this.
That's all I can think of at the moment. Any further questions, or you think I would fit well into your group, let me know.
I'm new too, and I agree with the part about wasting time in campaigns, I'll join a campaign
