Game: D&D 5e 2014 Group type: Online (Discord, Roll 20) Experience: Some Experience Location/Timezone: PST Schedule: Friday 2-5pm (Days can be adjusted to Monday if decided as a group) Roles sought: 4-5 Players
A crew of criminals trying to pull off the greatest score of their lives. The deeper you go, the bigger the stakes become. What begins as a single job may turn into something far greater than anyone expected.
++This is a campaign I’ve been working on for a while and still have various tweaks I want to try out with the help of players so it won’t be perfect once we start (Am a little slow). I am also the type of DM that isn’t super strict about the rule book and might go back on a few homebrew rules once in a while if I don’t see them working. I plan to have homebrew mechanisms to make heist missions more entertaining than taking the whole session to plan, just to make it more easy going for everyone. ++
Besides that..., I am starting a campaign that requires invested players interested in a long term campaign who are interested in worldbuilding, creative approaches, good communication and easygoing individuals. I am going to be using a few homebrew mechanisms and plan to have a long campaign that isn’t dark or too serious. There is no need for characters that are murder hobos, lone wolves or severely untrusting because that won’t be helpful in this campaign at all; it might only slow progress.
This campaign is focused on having the party feel like individuals in a crew who are interested in high stake heists, and daring jobs for gain and even fame. Where players will build up to make a name for themselves as a crew, recognising your party as a family and even following a thieves code to rise in the world. So a lot of strategizing and creative problem solving is going to be done to enact great heist and odd jobs. As well as combat and roll decisive decisions will be made when things go wrong.
Thus, there is no certain way players should make their characters I just simply ask that you hold an inspiration to an archetype of individuals you’d see in heist movies, like: “The Face” (A deceptive persuasive character that can get you out of a sticky situation) “The Specialists” (Well versed in traps, or arcana or disguises) “The Muscle” (Always necessary when a situation goes to combat) “The Scout” (When getting into a high-risk requires eyes everywhere)
-PS: This doesn’t mean each character is going to be thrown into one aspect of roleplay for the rest of the campaign. For example scouts won’t always just be scouting the city, they can be fighting in combat or deceive a noble in a party. You're a group after all, and will be participating together as such. It’s just a way to ensure the campaign is well rounded with different characters because it can easily become a campaign with only rogues when the campaign sounds like it’s heist focused. And even if am okay with all rogues of different archetypes I don’t think that will benefit the party in the long run when the arcs start to change and players realise that the first arc of the campaign had benefits for stealthy characters only to realize the forth arc is heavy in combat or the third arc is in an area full of magic users. (Also, if it’s a deal breaker, i’d like yall to know I won’t be accepting flying characters and/or spells like invisibility; i’ll explain more in session 0, where we will come up with a backstory as a group for the parties crew "name" what the failed mission was, and even determining on character creation ideas if nessessary.)
About the campaign concept: Well it’s a campaign inspired by Middle Eastern designs and desert like environments, and monsters. The party will have to face off powerful rivals, and factions they will have to deal with in an empire full of individuals with their own agendas. Thus the campaign will be full of daring scenarios, chaotic and fun moments that I want to enforce more cheerful and heroic personas instead of moody, dark personas. Because the campaign is lengthy, it’s best to consider it by arcs as there will be five big heists the characters will have to pull off in different areas away from the city capital in unique environments that can be best considered more as dungeons with different heist tropes (one literally being a dungeon.)
About the story: After a failed heist from the players, the crew decide to lay low for a while in a far away land nicknamed “The City of The Lost.” Which is known to hide away many criminals, thieves and those uninterested in being found. The empire is more desert than civilization, and it’s easy to get lost without knowing the passage. But when players finally make it to the main city within the empire it’s clear they didn’t know what they were truly getting themselves into. Especially the new opportunities they have gained to make a new name for themselves as a crew within a city full of individuals with a need to fill their pockets in any means possible. Especially when the Sultan's palace is said to hold the highest amount of riches ever seen to man.
