Game: D&D 5e 2014 Group type: Online (Discord, Roll 20) Experience: Some Experience Location/Timezone: PST Schedule: Friday 2-5pm (Days can be adjusted to Monday if decided as a group) Roles sought: 4-5 Players
A crew of criminals trying to pull off the greatest score of their lives. The deeper you go, the bigger the stakes become. What begins as a single job may turn into something far greater than anyone expected.
++This is a campaign I’ve been working on for a while and still have various tweaks I want to try out with the help of players so it won’t be perfect once we start (Am a little slow). I am also the type of DM that isn’t super strict about the rule book and might go back on a few homebrew rules once in a while if I don’t see them working. I plan to have homebrew mechanisms to make heist missions more entertaining than taking the whole session to plan, just to make it more easy going for everyone. ++
Besides that..., I am starting a campaign that requires invested players interested in a long term campaign who are interested in worldbuilding, creative approaches, good communication and easygoing individuals. I am going to be using a few homebrew mechanisms and plan to have a long campaign that isn’t dark or too serious. There is no need for characters that are murder hobos, lone wolves or severely untrusting because that won’t be helpful in this campaign at all; it might only slow progress.
This campaign is focused on having the party feel like individuals in a crew who are interested in high stake heists, and daring jobs for gain and even fame. Where players will build up to make a name for themselves as a crew, recognising your party as a family and even following a thieves code to rise in the world. So a lot of strategizing and creative problem solving is going to be done to enact great heist and odd jobs. As well as combat and roll decisive decisions will be made when things go wrong.
Thus, there is no certain way players should make their characters I just simply ask that you hold an inspiration to an archetype of individuals you’d see in heist movies, like: “The Face” (A deceptive persuasive character that can get you out of a sticky situation) “The Specialists” (Well versed in traps, or arcana or disguises) “The Muscle” (Always necessary when a situation goes to combat) “The Scout” (When getting into a high-risk requires eyes everywhere)
-PS: This doesn’t mean each character is going to be thrown into one aspect of roleplay for the rest of the campaign. For example scouts won’t always just be scouting the city, they can be fighting in combat or deceive a noble in a party. You're a group after all, and will be participating together as such. It’s just a way to ensure the campaign is well rounded with different characters because it can easily become a campaign with only rogues when the campaign sounds like it’s heist focused. And even if am okay with all rogues of different archetypes I don’t think that will benefit the party in the long run when the arcs start to change and players realise that the first arc of the campaign had benefits for stealthy characters only to realize the forth arc is heavy in combat or the third arc is in an area full of magic users. (Also, if it’s a deal breaker, i’d like yall to know I won’t be accepting flying characters and/or spells like invisibility; i’ll explain more in session 0, where we will come up with a backstory as a group for the parties crew "name" what the failed mission was, and even determining on character creation ideas if nessessary.)
About the campaign concept: Well it’s a campaign inspired by Middle Eastern designs and desert like environments, and monsters. The party will have to face off powerful rivals, and factions they will have to deal with in an empire full of individuals with their own agendas. Thus the campaign will be full of daring scenarios, chaotic and fun moments that I want to enforce more cheerful and heroic personas instead of moody, dark personas. Because the campaign is lengthy, it’s best to consider it by arcs as there will be five big heists the characters will have to pull off in different areas away from the city capital in unique environments that can be best considered more as dungeons with different heist tropes (one literally being a dungeon.)
About the story: After a failed heist from the players, the crew decide to lay low for a while in a far away land nicknamed “The City of The Lost.” Which is known to hide away many criminals, thieves and those uninterested in being found. The empire is more desert than civilization, and it’s easy to get lost without knowing the passage. But when players finally make it to the main city within the empire it’s clear they didn’t know what they were truly getting themselves into. Especially the new opportunities they have gained to make a new name for themselves as a crew within a city full of individuals with a need to fill their pockets in any means possible. Especially when the Sultan's palace is said to hold the highest amount of riches ever seen to man.

I'm trying to think of a concept which is not a Rogue, but I don't know what a Barbarian or Fighter would be doing when social interaction or sneaking is required. (Or when research or the nitty-gritty planning details is required). I don't have much inspiration, so I may not end up submitting anything. I do have some questions:
1) What's the stat generation method (Standard Array, Point Buy, Rolled)? 2) What source book options are available to create the character? 3) What level will the characters start at? 4) Restricting spells is certainly your right as a DM, but will it be a universal restriction (as in if Invisibility is banned for players, will it similarly be banned for NPC's)? 5) Could you provide a comprehensive list of banned spells? What happens if a banned spell is on a subclass's "always known" list? This is helpful to know for deciding what characters we can or can't make. (For instance, Trickery Clerics have Charm Person, Disguise Self and Pass Without Trace.) Are subclass features which emulate banned spells also banned? (For instance a Way of the Shadow Monk's "Cloak of Shadows" feature at 11th level which lets the monk become Invisible indefinitely as long as they don't cast a spell, attack, or enter Bright Light.) 6) In terms of Divine magic, do you have an existing pantheon of deities in mind, or a homebrew selection? (Because it can be challenging to create a Cleric-type character in a vaccuum.)
Your level of experience? Semi-experience, playing since around 3 years
Are you 18+? Are you capable of committing to a long campaign on the set days mentioned? Yes and yes
What are you looking for in a gaming experience? Ample opportunities for fun interactions
Provide some character ideas you're interested in (preferably have a second choice to consider.) Classically, a drow rogue, who's been on the street since childhood and needs a quick buck. Choice two: Working on a second choice still, but i am concidering a wizard or sorcerer
Any Questions for me? What level would we start at? Since it's implied the team has been around for a while Is multiclassing permitted? In case of druids, is wild-shapping into a bird or other winged creature prohibited?
Are you 18+? Are you capable of committing to a long campaign on the set days mentioned?
Yes I am above the age of 18 and am committed to a long campaign and the time and date are perfect for me.
What are you looking for in a gaming experience?
I have been looking for a group that is dedicated to a long term campaign. I would love to reach the higher levels. I love and enjoy RP and Combat. I am also looking for a group that has good communication as players and takes enjoyment and supports the other party members.
Provide some character ideas you're interested in (preferably have a second choice to consider.)
An eloquent silver tongued bard, who talks her way in and out of situations and has lots of healing spells. Because criminals need healing too and they pay well. I also need material for new songs and of course I will change the names, dates , and times so no one gets caught. I don't reveal my sources!
A wizard, well versed in the Arcane, magical traps, and magical artifacts.
Any Questions for me?
If selected as a player. I would ask more specific questions to ensure I built a character appropriate to the world and what's going on.
Hello everyone, i’ve answered/ will answer your question in this long…post (sorry)
The stats will be rolled on discord with the bot Avrae
I’d say to stick with the core books, and the books with…”guides to everything” aka Xanathar’s guide and Tasha’s cauldron
The players will be starting at level 2
Yes, what I ban on players will be banned to NPC’s. And I plan to go over this more in session zero. But am not ultimately banning invisibility and other spells similar to such as, charm person, disguise self. Am simply going to tweak them so they're more efficient and even out the field when doing heists. For example, the invisibility spell, won’t be a spell anymore it will be a rare potion the players can get a hold of later if they’d want. Or a charming person will cause those around the individual to become suspicious after a while. I just mentioned it, in such a way to make it known that I plan to add these tweaks to not soly rely on those spells.
Because of that there are no “banned spells” if anything the only real change is that the invisibility spell in “know lists”. So if some classes hold that spell in there list of “know” they can opt out to choosing a spell like; Blur spell, Mirror Image or Misty step. And because Invisibility isn’t banned but only converted to a potion I am not banning subclasses like Monk “Cloak of Shadows.” I’ll just limit it with a variety of security measures in game like bright lights, and various guards.
I have six existing pantheons official 5e content, Mask, Tymora, Waukeen, Oghma, Shar, and Tyr
Also, I am not open to 2024 classes, because I am not well informed in the 2024 edition of dnd yet.
Though am not allowing flying races, am okay with druids with flying creatures because that will come in later in the campaign as an ability and not a clutch to rely on solely
Players will be starting at level 2, and multiclassing is allowed
I’d also like to note that despite this being a “Heist” campaign I plan to add a good chunk of combat.
