And then there are also those of us who want to DM, but have trouble with buying multiple books to run the kinds of games we want. And I think another fly in the ointment of online games, is that it can often be harder to relate to people or to settle arguments between players when A) we don't know players IRL and B) can't see anybody's body language.
I'm a seasoned DM. I had taken a break from DnD and last year started to think about starting up a new campaign. I have a homebrew world and story in mind, but it was difficult to find players that i felt i could connect with. I used the Geek and Sundry's discord in the Critical Role channel to start asking around. I was quickly invited to a discord server with about 300 people, all looking to play together. There, i was able to put out my idea to a large group of players and take applications and get to know them during the 3 month preparation period. After that i selected my players who i felt made a good group that meshed really well together. I'm now almost 8 months in to the best DnD campaign i've run as a DM.
I think that discord servers can work, as long as the people are willing and work well together. New players can be intimidating to invite for DMs. But there are DM's who prefer to run oneshots or short campaigns to practice. This could be the answer. Allow people to get familiar with the game and the people. It'll make it more likely for them to start planning a long campaign together.
I am a retuning player to D&D. haven't Played in 30 years, (yes im old ok :) ) still tryig to get to grips with the ruleset jmping 4 editions and all the online play...just thought I would say HI.
Not sure what to say as haven’t actually visited Discord yet.
I am a veteran newbie if that makes any sense. I learned how to play on e1 when I was a kid from the age of about 9-12 and then stopped playing; although always stayed interested in fantasy themed books, movies and video games. Late last year my kids (7 & 12) wanted to learn about it, so we bought a starter set, Players Handbook and some plastic figures to entertain the 7 year old. We started a campaign with me as DM and played for a while, but then the kids seemed to lose interest and life got in the way and we stopped playing after a few sessions. Then lo and behold at the start of camp the now merely 13 year old found a group of older kids that play and wanted to start playing again. In trying to find more resources I stumbled across D&DBeyond and started fooling around making characters, and Now I want to find a campaign for myself. Any advice on using Discord?
Hello! I am new to D&D and I am really excited. I have made two characters and I am planning to attend a D&D meeting at a local game store so I can get a hang of it. I have been using this website to learn the rules but I would like suggestions of D&D websites to learn from.
Just played my first session on Discord and LOVED it. My only complaint would be if there was a way to reveal maps as we progress more easily. But the audio worked great and loading the characters and actions couldn’t be easier.

If you use any photo editing tool (free ones online included) then you can load up the map image and create black boxes in layers. Delete these layers out as the party progresses and you should have an adequate solution.
Go to Anyflip. they have a lot of DND books to learn from. Note you have to type the name of the book and then ANYflip. Example Hord of the Dragon Queen Anyflip.
Not sure if you have been answered. Just saw your post.
I DM over discord.
Top of the DnD channel catergory .. i have a DnD Source Link # channel ... that links to open page sources for rule books etc , as well direct links to DnD beyond.
What i have found to work well is to create a DM Note text channel only viewable by myself. Trust me, you will want this one.
Followed by a series of text channels that are literally just filled with scene related information.
I name each channel after Regions , Maps , and individual scenes. Once a new area is about to be added to , i add a copy paste channel of a previous map channel ( No need to edit permissions ). Then i add in the new Map , normally made via Inkarnate
THESE Channels are viewable to all my PLAYERS
Individual scenes - inclussive of Stat Block and npc data is pinned so its easy to look at as needed , as is general scene flavor text. Regardless , both NPC data and scene descriptions start with ALL CAPITALS naming the NPC or the SCENE so i can easily scroll thru PINS in that channel to find the information on the go.
THESE Channels are VIEWABLE only to ME.
MOST IMPORTANT CHANNEL SAVE FOR DIE ROLL comes next.
CANNON-RP
This channel contains all NPC names as the players get them , names of towns , villages , etc as they discover them if they not on a map. And the end of each game night , i include a brief summary of events from that game.
Then on the next game i can simply read of the CANNON-RP for those that didnt between last game and this one .. and easily recap and get everyone back on the same page after a 7 day break.
Next i have my die-roll# channel.
Using a bot that allows players to type !r 1d20 +/- Adv/dis etc to get random die rolls for attacks , damage etc is great. The players can see what each other roll , and they can view what i as the DM roll. So if a player dies to a critical back stab by a Gnoll Rogue.... that happened.
I use AVARE bot for discord . Great tool. Trust me its awesome.
Next are text channels that are limited to only a specific player and myself being able to view and type in.
I name these channels in order of players to the campaign.
OOC1X OOC2X and so on.
X is the name of the CHARACTER ( Not Player ) , as i find referring to a player by character name during the session helps immersion for them and myself. Just look at the discord channels , see ooc6-thagan , and i can then say " The House Varkeen Guardsman looks you up and down Thagan before speaking .... " And that player thinks i remembered his characters name. I didnt. I just looked it up in the discord channel.
I use these channels for discussing private matters with specific players without interrupting the flow of the game , answering rule questions , asking for player HITPOINTS , And most importantly , for allowing players to inform me of actions they dont want the group to know about and for me to give them information i dont want the group to know.
First player in my group gets ooc1 as a role. And so on.
Then the channel ooc1 gets default permissions set to nonviewable , followed by adding the role ooc1 , and giving that role the ability to view and comment on the channel. By hiding the channel from general view , it keeps the discord clean and neat for everyone .... while maintaining ease of access for me. ( The amount of times i have remembered a players name simply because i got to read it next to his/her ooc channel is ********).
I also have players use DnD beyond and export PDF of character sheet here for me to view while keeping Class , level etc secret from the rest of the group. Yes that guy is an orc , yes he is carrying a two handed axe , yes he is only wearing a loin cloth ... but little do they know that Krag got the slayer is actually a very accomplished Orc Cleric of Gmorra , Orc god of protection.
I play twice a month with friends locally and just started my first roll20 campaign online. I still have kinks to work out with my setup, but D&D helps me on a variety levels with anxiety, stress, etc. I'm probably going to play a 3rd campaign, as I want to play often. Not sure how I feel about Discord, so far. I'm mainly just looking at different communities to see if there's a decent campaign for moderate newbie players that fits my schedule.
Watching YouTube videos is fun, but it's not the same thing for me and I'm hoping to find decent parties to join.
Hi i am extremely new to D&D i have tried to run a couple of sessions as a DM with family t i believe i may be doing more than a few things wrong. I would love to be a PC but unfortunately i don't have the resources to be one. so a discord group or a DM learning discussion would be beneficial to more that just me.
I just found this community from watching some of the streamers. I started playing in 1975 in high school and through my time in the Navy. I have mostly been a player, but have DM'd a few noobie players in some gaming. I have played mostly computer RPG's since then but interested in getting back into more of a tabletop environment.
I started dnd a year ago in october to november not sure. i never have done a campaign or one shot with people i don't know. i am looking forward to one any time. i have tried a few campaigns with my family. the first 2 failed but once i got the books it helped a lot.
Ive been playing D&D way back in the 70's when it first came out, played all the editions but dropped out due to 4th edition pissed a lot of us off. I remember when I started it was a few little handbooks, Greyhawk, Blackmoor and a few others I forget. Then in 74 I think it was they released the blue book and after that came first, second and third (or was it 3.5) then 4th. During that period prior to 4th I joined RPGA as a player and a DM, I spent most of my D&D as a DM as I had the books and the incentive to run it for friends who couldn't DM it at that time. Between 2000 and 2008 (somewhere in there) I joined RPGA Living Greyhawk Perrenland region firstly as a player but I was talked into DM'ng so our home gaming group could catch up on the adventures and gain level to join existing clubs running higher level adventures. So there were 2 of us out of the group who ran RPGA adventures at home and levelled up to run adventures at a gaming club. I was also running Battletech games as well even took time to run a tournament game using points which was a first, and a system others continued after.
Since 4th killed it for us, I have been playing a number of MMORPG's but always missed the fun around the table, recently I managed to get a service pension and started to think about D&D again, I went to the local store and found out about 5th edition and began looking into it a bit more. Needless to say It seemed a better version of the game then previous editions, now the issue was due to being a pensioner I dont have the money to buy the books, so I though about joining a game but found out that the local club has far more players than DM's and I cant even consider being a DM until I've gone through the rules and worked it out again. There's the catch 22, they need DM's but I cant DM without re-learning the game as player and with the books. I hate discord, or more precisely my computer hates discord and crashes from it.
Honestly between work and college it's so hard for me to find time to go out and find a physical group
add on the fact that I live in a city with no friends within hundreds of miles from me other than my wife and a crippling fear of making new friends and discord has become a life saver
I use avrae a lot within discord and am able to not only play dnd, but at a pace that works for me and everyone in my group as well. I'm personally hoping to see more and more discord servers dedicated solely to dnd and LFGs grow over time.
I'm 36 years old and about 13 years ago, I used to play Shadowrun with my older brother and his friends. When they all moved on from tabletop gaming, I was still super excited to want to play. The biggest thing for 13-year old me, and now 36-year old me, is that I am SUPER introverted (INFJ) when meeting new people in real life. So, even though the idea of having a local comic shop to go to and play sounds awesome, I first have to overcome my own social anxieties and I know that won't happen.
The one time I did, when I was a kid, I didn't have any immediate chemistry with the people that were there, it felt super awkward, and I never tried again.
Now, I've never played D&D, specifically, but with TTRPGs starting to take off on Twitch, Mixer, and Caffeine (the show I'm specifically addicted to is The Dungeon Run on Caffeine), my interest is piqued. But, again, I know that I'm never going to go to my local comic shop even though I know that they run games for people of all levels.
Plus, I'm married (to a non-gamer) and I have two kids (10 and 8), so I would love the idea of a Discord-based adventure or campaign so that I could finally try and get into the game and maybe even make some friend that are in similar places in life. And, the tools on this site are so easy to use, I've already created two level 1 characters. lol.
And then there are also those of us who want to DM, but have trouble with buying multiple books to run the kinds of games we want. And I think another fly in the ointment of online games, is that it can often be harder to relate to people or to settle arguments between players when A) we don't know players IRL and B) can't see anybody's body language.
