Hadi looks to his freezing helmed companion through his well-worn, but well-made warm furs, and says, “I’m sure there is a fur trader in town friend. Are you short on funds? I could loan you the coin if you need it. We should be earning it back soon enough anyway. No one should suffer the cold out here.”
“I have enough. Barely. I’ll need the coin from this task, though.“ Iarroris stares at Hadi for a long moment. “My name is... Jarvis. Your offer is... generous. Everyone here is generous. The cold must make it essential.”
Once outside, Annique bundles herself up like many of the others. She has the hood of her heavy fur-lined cloak pulled up and cloth covering most of her face. Only her dark eyes are still visible. At her back she carries a warhammer, as well as a longbow. And she also carries a wooden shield, painted on the front with the emblem of Termalaine.
"So... we all need to stay together and watch for each other as we travel... umm..." It sounds like she is trying to take command, but her voice is a bit uncertain. While familiar with how the militia might organize, it is clear she has very little experience being in charge.
"Anyway, I can lead the way if everyone is ok with that. Any last supplies to get before we depart?" She glances toward Hadi and 'Jarvis' as she overhears them talking.
The road to Bryn Shander is relatively easy and with the help of Annique you manage to make good time, staying away from the worst of the almost unending blizzard.
You hear the howls of winter wolves not so far away, but the party is to large to make easy picking and the predators veer off to find less dangerous prey.
The walls of Bryn Shander stand 30 feet high and surround the whole town. Once a single cabin that sered as a meeting point for all the others cities leaders it has grown into the largest of Icewind Dale communities and the commercial center of the region.
Despite it being early afternoon you find the East gate closed and you can glimpse at a shape, in the dim light, looking down at you from the walls.
"Who are you and what do you want ?" the voice calls out. The sould muffled by the blowing wind.
To all
Some of you might have had business here or even lived in this town for a while. If you think it worth the addition to the story and your backstory you can create the Guard NPC that is calling out. A simple description and your relation with him are enough. We will roll with it. You can add details in the PM as you wish.
"Well," the voice answers back, "we are closed here. Orders you understand. You might want to try another gate. North or South as you wish."
It will take the party another hour to go back to the road and travail to either gates. It is early afternoon as fat as you can tell but the weather is getting worse.
Getting inside those walls, protected from the cold wind is appealing right now. You have seen to many nose and fingers blackened by frostbite and lost.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
"Get me your superior soldier!"Hadi yells up over the wind and cold, not at all enjoying himself out here. "Orders may be orders, but a Benotto is not left out in the cold!"
He then also sends a message to Laza, still circling above, to give him a quick view of what's behind the gates.

Amaryllis shouts upwards, towards the man on the wall: "What does it matter? Either we enter through this gate, or we freeze some more before we enter another! If we get in either way, what matter is it for you to allow us a passage here? In the best-case scenario, you delayed six people from entering this town for an hour. In the worst-case, you killed six people, either by depriving them of warmth or leaving them to be a meal to the wolves. Or both!" Amaryllis turns away from the wall to strengthen her words and takes two steps away before bringing her hand - with the glove - close to her mouth. She makes a sound into the glove, which seems to be completely blocked by it. Then, she points away from the wall, concentrating on a point 30' away from her. Suddenly, the sound of wolves howling is heard from that spot, though Amaryllis hopes the guard won't notice the exact place from which it comes. She turns back to the gate and runs a few steps closer, trying to put on a scared act. "Look, they've spotted us. If we go away from the walls, they will definitely attack!"
Performance/Deception/Persuasion (all the same bonus): 16.
Annique listens to Hadi's attempts then turns for a moment at the sound of the wolves behind. Looking back to the guard however, she suddenly calls out. "Garend! Is that you? Garend Pinewhisk? I know it's hard to recognize people in all these coverings, but it's Annique!" She briefly removes the cloth from her face. "How is Sehra?
There is only a brief pause then she continues. "We really do need to get out of the cold. Our visit to Bryn Shander will be brief. And quicker if you could find a way to let us in here. I will vouch for these people."
Hadi's call about the superior doesn't have the desired effect. The guard laughs out loud and shouts back.
"She'll have my skin if I don't follow the orders. You have no idea."
But as Amarrylis calls out trying to drive some sense into the man he stops laughing seeming to ponder. The howl of the wolves enerves him and you can hear him calling for archers at the east gate. His voice trembles letting his fear and struggles show.
Recognizing Annique he makes his decision.
"Damn Annique, you don't rightly know what you are asking but Sehra will have my hide if anything happens to you and your friends. Come to the gate. I'll crack it open to let you all in." He moves quickly out of sight and several minutes later the east gate lumbers open just enough for all of you to file in.
Garend keeps looking over his shoulders and keeps on saying .... " Go, go, ... " as the party enters the city and the protection of its wall.
Being out of the wind is comfort enough and it seems to all of you that you've gained several degrees.
"Go to wherever you need to go and don't stay in the open, I don't need the trouble." His voice breaks a little from stress.
" You owe me Annique," he adds pushing the last of the group toward a smaller street and away from the gate. "And don't forget to go say hello to Sehra."
Though it is still afternoon, the streets are empty around the east gate. It is a short walk to the Twin Hammers and once inside a delight to be out of the cold.
Shivering, you take stock of your surroundings.
There is a large common room with a few tables and a large fire blazing in the hearth. A lith ( for a dwarf) dwarven maiden smiles as you enter.
" Ha, customers." She says loud enough to be heard even in the back rooms, her rough voice surprising, " happy to have you here. Take a table near the fire and I ll be right there for you all."
"To think that reason was not enough, but knowing each other before was." Amaryllis remarks after they're away from the guard. When she says it, it sounds as if people are usually following reason, and this was the exception.
Once they're in the Twin Hanmers, Amaryllis doesn't want to delay any longer. A mystery is waiting to be solved. She walks straight to the dwarven maiden, her small steps quick and determined. Once she's in front of her, she talks. "Actually, we came for a different reason. Kalvin sent us to solve a mystery. Are you his daughter?"
Annique hurries through the gate and goes to talk to Garend. "Thank you. l know it was a lot to ask, and I do owe you for this. And I wil say hello to Sehra when I see her. Sorry to run though..."
As the others are headed off down the street, she follows, making her one of the last to enter the Twin Hammers.
Rinn pads silently over to the fireplace ahead of the remainder of the party, eager and energetically shedding her furs. She settles on the far side of the fireplace, as near the grate as the heat will allow, allowing room for the rest to file in, before drawing her coin purse in anticipation of some food and drink.
As the gate opens, it's hard to see Hadi's scowl at the guard through his furs at the lack of respect for his family name, though he keeps quiet as Annique did at least get them through. That doesn't stop him from having Laza fly overhead just as they pass and drop bird bomb on the guard though. Hadi then follows the group to the Inn, happy to be out of the cold, and barely has a chance to think before Amaryllis starts asking questions.
‘Jarvis’ looks to the nearby Hadi with concern in his voice. “There seems to be something going on here that has everyone on unusual guard. Is this normal? Or perhaps related to our task?”

Iarroris struggles through the cold, following the others. He is constantly scanning the horizon and watching his own associates in equal measure.
He shivers, but whispers a mantra to himself as he walks, seeming to put mind over matter.
Did I read that right? 4 hours of travel so 4 con saves?

When we arrive, Iarroris will go to buy some cold weather clothing.

Laza (owl familiar) perception 20
PbP 🎲: Tyekanik; Moneo Noree; Korba Muris; & occasional DM:
For Laza.
The owl circles for a time over the city happy that the two archers patrolling the perimeter are not clever enough to look up.
She glimpse at a black smoke spiraling in the wind, in the center of the town and recoil at the smell of it. Burnt flesh.
Groups of humanoids (mostly humans) are leaving the area and retreating to shelter. Laza thinks they are weak for not reveling in the wind.
At the gate the only guard is shaking from the cold. He looks to the small hut longingly. Another creature not meant to live here.
Hadi feels the virtual scoff of the owl.
