The founder of M.E.T.A.L. (Magical Enforcement, Tracking, Analystics, and Location agency) an organization dedicated to the study of magic items, their uses, and keeping them out of the wrong hands, has called you into his office. You are experienced agents from all departments, well known and trusted with high-level secrets and missions. You wonder what could possibly have happened to require each of you.
I am looking for four-six players for my homebrew campaign. I tried this a while back but failed due to bad planning and significant plot holes, I am trying again with a higher-level campaign with a more focused objective. So, application requires;
Character Name:
Character department (With subsects as applicable): (Choices are R&D, Information Services, Special Forces, Shadow Ops) Detailed below
Characer Race:
Character Class: (level ten)
Background:
Dark secret (optional, might add a bit of flavor): (such as, you cheated your way to the top, you claimed credit for something someone else did etc)
Infamous Moment: (Something that you did that earned you respect in the agency. This is a chance to effect the lore of this not-fully-shaped world by creating hardships your character ended, villains that your character has defeated, or inventing new magic items your character found)
All official, UA, and critical role content allowed, Homebrew is allowed so long as you run it by me first, and Ability Scores are either Point buy or Rolled (reroll ones)
Your character is allowed five uncommon magic items, three rare items, and one very rare item.
Departments:
R&D: This department was founded by Dimble Timbers, the Gnome Wizard, so that as dark magics evolved, so could the methods to fight them and track them. As a part of the R&D department, you adapt on the field, testing out new and experimental technologies for the betterment and protection of the lives of agents.
Information Services:
Information Services was founded by Eltress the Connected, Elven Bard, so that they might stay connected for the purpose of gathering and collecting information on rumors of lost artifacts, ancient techniques, and lost secrets. As an agent of Information Services, you might be uncovering artifacts first-hand, learning secrets lost to time, or following up on rumors of magical anomalies.
Special Forces:
This Division was formed by Stronghold himself to train future generations to protect the lands and people. Having expanded into subsects, it has multiple divisions for the multiple threats.
Juggernauts:These specialized fighters are heavy hitters and make up for what they lack in speed in sheer force and power. Often wearing specialized suits and trained in many diversified fighting styles, these well named Juggernauts are a sight to behold on the battlefield.
Handlers:These trainers understand the power of nature and it's uses in battle. Training many beasts from messenger pigeons to battle wolves to assault Elephants, these trainers can raise an army from the wild.
Riders:Riders are trained in mounted combat ranging from horses to dire wolves to anything they can ride. Masters of moving combat, they have learned to hit and go while avoiding counter attacks.
Shadow Ops:
Founded by Jacob's brother, Shin Stronghold, who valued stealth and subterfuge over brute strength.
Jumpers:Jumpers wear special suits that allow them silent flight so they can access places higher up with minimal resistance.
Hijackers:Hijackers are well learned in the art of getting into places they shouldn't be able to and stealing liberating objects from those that would misuse them.
Hunters: Trained to find and eliminate troublemakers that the legal system won't take action against, these Hunters are renowned for their stealth and ability to track down their quarries to the ends of the earth.
I would like to have at least one agent from each department, but please play something that you'll have fun with.
If you have any other questions pertaining to lore, please feel free to ask.

Ooh, been waiting for a high-tech/magic campaign! This is perfect!
Question: Any special starting equipment?
Character Name: Kai
Race: Aarakocra
Class: Artificer (Artillerist)
Department: Shadow Ops (Jumpers)
Ability scores:101118131315
Background: Mercenary Veteran
"Talon-One, all systems go. Ready for launch."
Formerly the leader of the Steel Talons, a trio of aarakocra bandits with eyes for loot and wings for flying away with it, Kai's exploits earned the attention of M.E.T.A.L. The birdman was offered a handsome sum to cease his activities and join their forces, quickly becoming renowned for his technical expertise and agility in air combat alongside the Jumper squadrons. Through the task of training new recruits for air battle, he gained new respect for the men of the organization, though he still prefers the adrenaline of fighting without having to worry about anyone else.
Infamous Moment: In the midst of stopping a flying ship bearing a fist-sized orb known as the Pyro Core, capable of channeling devastating energies and potentially razing entire cities, it was Kai who flew up to the ship, defeated the captain and her goons, and recovered the orb with the support of his fellow jumpers. During the attack, however, an arc of fire from the core singed him, burning his wings to cinders and grounding him for months.
In the aftermath of his victory, seemingly retired from his duties as a jumper, Kai was unseen by any M.E.T.A.L. personnel for months. He eventually returned, a pair of mechanical wings and a special jet backpack mounted where his real wings currently were, and continued his career with even greater efficiency.
Dark Secrets: Kai's jetpack was not his own creation, but rather the creation of a rather shady group of scientists known as World's Edge. The price for such a creation was the pyro core, which Kai had kept since the battle and was confident he could re-retrieve the core if it was ever misused for any harmful purpose. It has not been... yet.
As a young dwarf soldier, before joining the agency, went into a rage during a battle and ended up slaughtering a dozen enemy combatants that had already surrendered. Feels ashamed to this day.
Infamous Moment: First mission for the Agency, his team was out with a high-level wizard from R&D, searching for a powerful demon-summoning wand. The team was ambushed by cultists, and everyone was knocked unconscious except for Borgon, who single-handedly turned the tide of the battle, rescued his team, and got them back to headquarters safely. Didn't get the wand, though.
Character Department: Information Services or a highjacker/hunter of the Shadow Ops. Information Services are the first choice though.
Character Class: Paladin 2/ Whispers Bard 8
Background: Investigator
Dark Secret:
During an incredibly difficult excavation mission, Heli and the rest of the expedition stumbled upon a sealed off undead creature that she awakened by mistake. She and one other person were the only survivors. They managed to get the artifact that was the goal of the whole ordeal and escape, but the person she escaped with made her feel paranoid. Perhaps it was her own guilt speaking through someone else, but she ended up killing them. Her acquiring that artifact was the biggest point of her career. She wouldn't make it without that, and that sort of caused her to have a bit of an imposter syndrome, but she rarely ever speaks of that.
Infmous Moment: Heli's other best achievement is her sneaking into Duchess Cravezir's castle and stealing the Crown of the First Sin. The Vampire Duchess held a ball, which Heli successfully managed to penetrate. She got into Cravezir's good graces through a multitude of conversations, and even though she saw through Heli's disguise almost immediately, the Eladrin managed to keep her talking and eventually they agreed to a dance. During that she snatched the crown and managed to get away with minimal fighting and casualties. Heli herself believes that the whole mission was one big stroke of good luck.
Character department (With subsects as applicable): Information Services
Characer Race: Goblin
Character Class: Bard (Lore)
Background: Entertainer
Dark secret (optional, might add a bit of flavor): Inafi runs a secret black market among their contact network, trading secrets learned for money and, occasionally, the location of artifacts that will keep their bosses happy and off their back.
Infamous Moment: Inafi grew up in the slums, an up-and-coming criminal who found themself in control of a rather extensive contact network of fellow goblins, kobolds, kenku, and other slum-dwellers. The expansive network gained METAL's attention because it was good at digging up secrets that METAL did not want in the wrong hands. One such secret - the Hand of Kelor - was brought to Inafi by a young kenku seeking refuge from the cult that was after her. Inafi successfully defended both the kenku and the Hand (an item METAL had been seeking for years) from the cult using both underhanded tactics and the extensive network they had built, which could navigate both the city and the tunnels beneath it, with ease. Inafi sent both kenku and Hand to METAL, having previously worked with the group regarding certain secrets that fell in their lap. When METAL offered them a more lucrative, permanent position, Inafi saw an opportunity and did not turn them down.
This looks SICK! Putting in my rolls, then I will build a character around them.
Character Name: Quinn Eliaris
Race: Kalashtar
Class: Bloodhunter (Ghostslayer)
Department: R&D
Ability scores: Ability scores: 15139151414
Background: Criminal (Spy)
Infamous Moment: Quinn joined the Research and Development department as a field agent when he was barely more than a child. Because of his tender age, he was mocked by the other agents tasked with finding and bringing in rare pieces of magic to be experimented on. His team was never allowed on any jobs that were remotely difficult, and because of that he had no chance of climbing the ranks. When he got fed up with his treatment, he signed up for an extremely dangerous mission solo - he had to recover a seed from the world tree. Everyone expected that he would perish in the attempt. To everyone's amazement, and suspicion, he returned unscathed with the seed. Not only was he successful in his mission, however, but he was far more powerful. Years later, the moment is still talked about.
Dark Secret:
On the mission which made him famous in his department, Quinn nearly died. Despite his skill, he was bested by the Guardian of the World Tree - the great squirrel Ratatoskr. Quinn was loathe to go back to the Department in shame, so he struck a deal with a powerful enchantress. She gave him the power that he needed to overcome the Guardian and complete his quest, however Quinn now owes her a favour. Worse, an unbounded favour, with which she could demand anything of him, even his life.
I would also like to say that I love that everyone jumped on the “dark secret” thing which also opened up a lot of side quests thank you for that everyone!
Edit: I did note that some of you have included magic items in your backstories. If you have no clue what these do and just thought they sounded cool you can either make up uses or I’ll make them up. If you have a specific use in mind when you picked these, could you please PM me the details and whether or not your character knew what they had in their possession please.

Hope I am not to late to jump in on this - concept looks great! Will flesh out background and secrets shortly
Ability scores: 15161411916
Character Name: Victorin
Character department: Shadow Ops - Hijackers
Characer Race: Half-Elf
Character Class: (level ten) Rogue 2 / Warlock 8
Background: Criminal. Victorin started as a common criminal working the streets, he was an apt pupil and rising thief. He was a favorite of wizards and others seeking to find and liberate arcane secrets from their rightful owners. His skills and work brought to the attention of METAL and he turned his talents to the good of the organization, mostly.
Dark secret:
Young, cocky, and looking for power and knowledge, during one of his jobs to recover an amulet rumored to have connections to the Chained God, his curiosity got the better of him and he opened an ancient grimoire. His mind opened to fragments of lost knowledge older than time itself, he unwittingly entered into a pact with a Great Old One. He kept the book, and occasionally other spoils that are not on the METAL artifact list from his jobs. Used to working alone, like many hijackers, he has kept his patron and the associated gifts secret.
Infamous Moment: After his mission to recover the amulet , he had a whole different level of swagger and skill. On a dare, he infiltrated Shin Stonghold’s office and stole his personal embossed Rod of Security, a bottle of fine elvish liquor, and a cigar. After taking the hijacker team on a well-deserved rest and relaxation tour, he replaced the wand in the office. The liquor and cigar were never seen again. Shin surely knows what happened, but has never mentioned it to Victorin. The rest of the hijackers view him in awe.

Ability scores: 181515121114
Character Name: Agar Akame
Character department: R&D
Characer Race: Human (variant)
Character Class: Aberrant Mind 9/Wizard 1
Background: Sage
Dark secret: Ages ago, the Akame family (under a different name) became notorious for their strange mental powers. Some even said that the family was cursed with evil. They were feared and hated and finally others turned against them and nearly wiped them out. The few remaining members went into hiding, leaving their home and changing everything about them to become unrecognizable, beginning with their family name. Their powers remain, and when one among them who has reached a certain age experiences great loss or disappointment, a strange energy is released in their brains and changes them, unlocking their powers. These powers feed upon their emotions and grow stronger, in turn strengthening those emotions, in a feedback loop. When used, these special powers turn their eyes red. Agar joined the R&D department primarily to figure out how to harness these powers without having them go out of control, and better understood. He poses as a typical wizard whose field of study is rules of magic itself.
Character department (With subsects as applicable): R&D
Characer Race: High Elf
Character Class: Wizard (Bladesinger) 7/Artificer (Battle Smith) 3
Background: Sage - Born with a unique blend of intelligence and a daredevil-like thirst for adventure and thrills, Carcan was a natural fit for the R&D department. He was recruited at a young age and has spent the majority of his life in a perpetual cycle of adventure and study.
Dark secret (optional, might add a bit of flavor):
Carcan was out exploring with his best friend (Bryna, another Elven R&D employee) when they discovered a broken mechanical dog (see Infamous Moment below) in some ancient ruins. Bryna was initially wary, arguing that this discovery seemed out of place. However, Carcan talked her into getting a closer look. When Bryna first touched the dog, she just vanished without a trace. After a few minutes, it was clear to Carcan that she wasn't pulling a prank and that something terrible had happened. He used Mage Hand to gather the pieces of the dog without making physical contact and returned home. Knowing that telling the truth would only lead to the dog being confiscated (meaning he'd lose his last possible connection to Bryna) Carcan decided to lie about Bryna's fate, telling others that she tragically died when they were attacked by an ancient Stone Golem that was still protecting the ruins. He thought fixing the dog would be the key to finding Bryna, but no big revelation came once it was fixed. Now, he's not sure what to do next but he hasn't given up hope of finding his friend.
Infamous Moment: Months ago Carcan discovered a metal, mechanical dog in disrepair. Since then, he has been singularly focused on finding a way to repair it and get it working. After dedicating every waking moment of the days since his discovery to research, tinkering, and enchanting he finally got it working a few days ago. Now, he's eager to bring his new ally with him out into the field to test it out.
CharaCharactercter department (With subsects as applicable): R&D
Characer Race: Kobold
Character Class: Artificer (Battlesmith)
Background: Sage
Dark secret (optional, might add a bit of flavor): Mikmek caused an explosion in his lab that killed his subordinates and left him touched in the head and missing most of his right arm and leg. This led him to get into strange research that ended up with him being considered to dangerous to be left in charge of lab without supervision.
Infamous Moment: Despite the personal danger to himself, Mikmek through his research was able to make the first stride in making more intelligent constructs, this being the first of his many Steel Defenders. Through his work he was able to allow other battlesmiths to give their own Defenders the ability to better follow directions and with his own he was able to give it almost human intelligence through years of work.
These all look great! I will be shutting down recruitment now and looking over the characters. I hope that everyone understands that I will not be able to fit everyone into this one campaign. Thank you everyone for these awesome applications and I should have a team put together by the end of the day!
Edit: I would also recommend that players looking for a short, low effort campaign look somewhere else, since I would like to take this into epic levels. I might open up recruit for a level-5 campaign later, if inspiration strikes.

After dedicating every waking moment of the days since his discovery to research, tinkering, and enchanting he finally got it working a few days ago. Now, he's eager to bring his new ally with him out into the field to test it out.

Name: Mikmek The Mad
Farewell.
OK, after looking over the applications, the team I have chosen is:
DeltaEdge27
PlaqueInquisitor
GoodBovine

and Iancellot.
Thank you to the other applicants, and I hope you have better luck elsewhere.
Farewell.
