Cool, early-evening air blows through a narrow street in Phlan. The streets are bustling with famished laborers out for a meal, vendors hawking their wares, and grimy sailors looking for moorage at barstools.
The evening's peace is broken as a burly Black Fist guard pushes his way through the rabble and drives a nail through a sheet of parchment with a stout hammer--affixing it to a signpost.
Most visible is the bold, black print at the top which reads:
"Wanted for Thievery Most Cunning."
Our Party:
Hex: Tiefling Ranger Ola do Mari: Water Genasi Paladin/Warlock (The Hexblade) Sylyra Wasanthi: Wood Elf Druid (Circle of the Shepherd) Uragum: Goliath Wizard (War Magic)
OOC: Welcome back, everyone! You have the freedom to determine where your character is and what they are doing at the start of this adventure, so long as at least one character sees the handbill that has just been posted and can bring it to the party's attention. It can be assumed that characters are aware of the location of the rest of the party and can track them down quickly.
Viol tucked under his arm and heading back to The Laughing Goblin from yet another strike out in his search for income, Sylyra notices the Black Fist pushing his way by. As he still experiences a sour taste in his mouth brought on by the supposed peace keepers of Phlan — despite the fact Grim is no more — the elf can't help but watch the guard long enough to see him post the bill. Sylyra pauses as the hammering rings out, adding to the din. Once the Fist moves on, he steps up to examine the notice.
Hex is heading to the Laughing Goblin as well, spinning an arrow in her hand casually when she spots Sylyra. She jogs up to him and softly pokes him in the side with the arrow.
"Hello, Hello! Heading to the Laughing Goblin as well?"
Depends of the time of the day, Ola could be in the Laughing Goblin. After all, she lived there. Unless there was a planned patrol of the catacombs or an emergency anywhere, she might have been having breakfast/launch there.
Uragum had spent the last two weeks mostly mopping about when in his room. Outside his room he'd dress appropriately and roam about town while he looked for something, anything to catch his attention but to little affect.
Though when coming across the add for the investigation job, that might be just the thing to challenge him... and his friends, to get him out of his funk.
Finding Ola at the table, he'd stride over and slap the add down. "A new job and possibly a challenging one at that."
Ola put away her glass, wiped her lips with the napkin and picked up the flier. "Thievery... And most cunning." She sighed. "Black Fist here do need all the help they can get, I guess. What will we be up against this time?"Ola read the smaller text under the flashy title.
Sylyra jumps and turns with angry eyes to look at Hex. Once he realizes it’s her, his face relaxes into its usual vapid configuration. He readjusts the viol under his arm, but Hex can’t tell if the action is benign, or if he’s trying to hide it from her. He turns to look at the notice again.
The signpost has a number of similar signs nailed to it, but this most recent addition bears the most detail by far, describing the crimes and misdeeds of a man named Spernik. The paper bears the caricature of a young, male human. He appears to have protruding, rat-like ears and beady eyes, though how much of this can be attributed to artistic liberty is anyone's guess.
The sign displays a list of charges such as theft, breaching the peace, rendering aid and abetment to the enemies of Phlan and a slew of other, lesser offenses. Below this, the sign reads "Reward Promised by the Lord Sage of Phlan" and bears an official-looking seal.
"Lord Sage himself."Ola raised her brows. "I wonder what did this thief had stolen." She paused and added with a bit hesitation. "Can not say I know much about catching thieves, though."
Hex laughs at Sylyra's reaction before taking a look at the notice as well. She hums in interest as she reads. "Thievery most cunning? Sounds like fun. Thinking about taking the job with the rest of the group?"
Sylyra nods while reading the notice over again. "Sounds simple enough. I'm not familiar with this 'Lord Sage', but he sounds like someone I should meet." The elf turns and looks at the tiefling, not quite smiling, but leading her to believe he is amused. "Let's head back to the Goblin and tell the others." He walks back to The Laughing Goblin, but once they enter, and he sees Ola and Uragum talking, the elf pauses. "I'll ... ask (whoever is behind the bar) about this. You let Ola and Uragum know what's going on." He heads straight to the bar to inquire as to whether whoever is behind the bar knows about the job, Spernik, and/or the Lord Sage of Phlan.
Ola raised her eyes from the documents at the entry of the companions. "Ah, they are here, no need to search."She greeted Hex and Sylyra, ignoring expected demonstrative maneuver of the latter, motioned Hex to join the table. "Have you seen that? Can not say this is our kind of work but if Black Fist already tried and failed, and it is Lord Sage and the only library in the town that needs help, it might be worthy of our attention."
Hex approaches the two others with a wave and sits at the table. She nods at Ola's question, sticking a thumb in the direction of Sylyra. "Yep. Sylyra just went to ask for more information."
Uragum grabs the paper and reads it over again. "This is for the Lord Sage? I must have skimmed over that part... must be some sort if hidden or secret knowledge that was taken. All the more interesting now."
The avenues and byways of Phlan are packed with townsfolk returning home from work or heading to taverns for the night. The streets outside are dimly lit by soft orange lamplight as the sun sets for the evening.
Imizael, the elven-named human, is working the bar of The Laughing Goblin as usual, while the blustering Fat Mar shuffles back and forth between tables. Imizael smirks at Sylyra and offers, "Nah, I don't pay much attention to the work of adventurers, I just know my bar sees more money when you find it. I know the Lord Sage though...not personally, mind you. He runs Mantor's Library in Scholar's Square. Impossible to miss the place, you'll know it as soon as you get there. You might have some trouble finding him though, don't think he's the type to see a lot of visitors."
Sylyra turns around to see the others looking at him. His eyes scan the room before he ducks his head and makes a beeline for their table, almost collapsing into a chair and speaking through clinched teeth. After relaying what Imizael told him, he offers, "We could start at the library, or we could inquire with the Black Fists. We did them a favor once, so they might be helpful."
Hex watches as Sylyra makes his way to the group with a raised brow and pointed look. She doesn't say anything, though, and listens as he speaks. When he finishes relaying the information, Hex leans back in her chair and folds her arms over her chest. "Library might be good to go to first, seeing how it's the Lord Sage who's paying. We can go to the Black Fist after if we want more info."
"Agreed." Library was everyone's decision and at the evening it was definitely easier to find Lord Sage at his post that a Black First working overtime. "Shall we?" She stood up ready to go.
"I want to leave my instrument here," Sylyra says, almost whispering. "I'll meet you at the library." The elf then disappears to his room and plans to walk at least 15 feet behind the others to the library with his hood pulled low to cast a shadow across his face.
