Toriel hears the library's front doors open and close (DC 10 | Passive Perception 13) followed by a familiar voice calling, "Mom! Are you in here?" As she hears her daughter's steps crossing the foyer.
"I'm up here! In the main reading room, my child! I thought we were meeting at Grillby's for dinner?", Toriel calls as she hears Chara begin ascending the stair case.
As Chara reaches the top of the stairs and walks into the large open area she says, "Yeah, mom, it's already three-quarters of the spire. Sans and the others ate and went home."
"I brought dinner.", she continues holding up her satchel.
Toriel sat down beside Chara and began looking at her meal. After taking a sip of her tea and chewing up a bite she commented, "mmm, so good."
Then replied, "I don't know really. It looks like some very old historical records about a partially successful expedition in some area south and maybe below Hotland."
"Some of it reminds me a bit of pre-barrier... but I don't remember bringing it her from the ruins. Still we moved things a very long time ago. I wasn't the only archivist in the old homestead or Snowdin back then."
"Of course, one of Muffet's grandchildren brought it in."
Chara rolls their eyes and they continue their meal. Toriel describes the journal, chest and its contents. Chara shares the details of their team's hunt and other activities of the day.
Toriel watched as Sans set a warming orb, Chara and Greymalkin began preparing a meal, Muffett's two eldest granddaughters continued setting camp, Aster and Tsunderplane set about securing the area and Gearbox finished mapping out the days travels.
Aster was the one who figured out how to activate Gearbox. Tsunderplane who understood it. Chara and Sans figured out the route referenced in the journal with Toriel providing translation and contextualization.
Now, here they were somewhere three weeks south of and deep below Hotland. The Kwalish expedition notes and journal had proven largely accurate to date despite some minor changes in geography. These Barrier caverns and the paths through them should be nearby; maybe a day or two longer before they find the right path.
Working out the old calendar had been interesting. Today, might be Zol of Rhaan the year on surface is unknown. Here few have tracked the long ages that have passed. Aster decided we call it 20 CE (Current Era) based on our tracking the years Chara has been with us. Sans is calling it "Chara Entered".
It's good having Greymalkin along. I think sometimes her more human appearance puts Chara more at ease. Well, her vampiric eladrin half anyway, tall, elegant, cinky high teased red hair, well made dresses and magical-mechanical trinkets always swirling around her person. Of course, her interest in alchemical ingredients is a welcome conversation point for the Muffett girls. Additionally, I am rather fond of her red-eyed, red furred feline sole half; such a fine cat.
Both the devices and the feline put Sans ill at ease. I'm not sure why.
Muffett's granddaughters are a treat. I've taken to calling them Zalsha and Zherhu. They say they like the names and may keep them should they earn a naming. I was a little surprised to learn none of Muffett's granddaughters and only a few of her daughters had names of their own. Apparently, they earn a naming should they catch a male (and/or become mothers?). I wonder what my dear departed Asgore would say to that.
Zalsha and Zherhu are keen alchemists and naturalists. They keep Greymalkin occupied which I do admit is quite often a blessing.
Meanwhile, miles above the Barrier caverns and the hotlands, to the surface, to the Stone Crage Mountain peaks, far to the southeast, to Gorgonhorn, near the Mournland border.
Mystique Rayon, is preparing for a long journey north, to Sharn.
The plan? Travel to Kennrun, take the road to New Cyre then to Starilaskur, finally the light rail to Wroat to First Tower to Sharn.
She's no doubt her Drake is capable of the trail or trials. Honestly, she's a little worried about her own abilities. Still the opportunity to act as a house junior Marshall is worth the risk; maybe.
Honestly, being a third generation out of the Mournland, she knows this is an opportunity not likely to come open again.
As a House Deneith agent, Mystique Rayon has been very successful.
Her tribe, grandparents and parents are very proud of her. She loves them all, though she feels they are too comfortable being "the other", "the Verdan".
"It is a hundred miles north by northwest from here, Gorgonhorn, to Kennrun. At Kennrun we'll take the road west two hundred miles to New Cyre. Then we'll be on the road north another two hundred miles to Starilaskur. From there, we'll be on the Lightning Rail. Six hundred fifty miles to Wroat then three hundred seventy-five miles to First Tower and a hundred miles to Sharn from there.", Mystique says. She's not really telling Pymbisdis as much as vocalizing the plan she's all but memorized.

"Oh. Thanks, sweetie.", Toriel replies.
"We can use that round table. It's clean."
"Sorry, I lost track of the time again."
"It's fine. Come eat. Tell me what all that is.", Chara says, kindly, as she begins unpacking the meal Grillby had packed up for them.
Toriel sat down beside Chara and began looking at her meal. After taking a sip of her tea and chewing up a bite she commented, "mmm, so good."

"Mom. Eat.", Chara says smiling.
Toriel smiles back and continues her meal. "You know you don't smile enough. It's quite fetching."
Chara rolls their eyes and they continue their meal. Toriel describes the journal, chest and its contents. Chara shares the details of their team's hunt and other activities of the day.
They were all exhausted.
Toriel watched as Sans set a warming orb, Chara and Greymalkin began preparing a meal, Muffett's two eldest granddaughters continued setting camp, Aster and Tsunderplane set about securing the area and Gearbox finished mapping out the days travels.

Muffett and Greymalkin provided the funding for this expedition.
