Under the notices on the job board, there is a crude map of the area you can see that the windmill is roughly 5 miles South of Phandalin. The place the dwarves are is roughly another 15 miles South West. It is about midday now, so you could probably get to the windmill today and back by nightfall or spend the night on the road if you want to go see the dwarves.
Peering first at one half-elf and then at the other, Skorli seems about to say something, then changes his mind. His brow furrows. Then he seems to change his mind again.
"Master Ranger," he begins, in Common, "at least that's what ye appear to be, sir, ye must have scouted around a bit in these parts. Have ye any thoughts on how we should proceed?"
"For me ownself, I reckon them dwarves is tough enough to last another night if need be, and it don't set right with me ta leave a holy woman out there all by her lonesome."
“Aye……” and Zal relates what he knows of the area and what he thinks should be the route to take if they go warn the dwarves first and try to pick up the midwife on the return. “My knowledge of the area isn’t infallible so if anyone has anything to add it would be well received…..”
"I kind of know this area, but I don't come down this way much. I'll see if I can help." He pauses for a moment, calculating. "If we help the auntie today and have her back by tonight, we can afford some food and a room, then tomorrow we can probably make 15 miles if we're quick to the excavation."
He looks up and cocks his head, looking for affirmation.
“That works too.” He looks around at each member of the group, ending at Aelyn, “Well since it appears we are going to tackle this together I should introduce myself. My allies call me Zal and my opponents call me significantly less charitable things. Skorli’s thought is a good one, it gives us a chance to get used to one another and, should we run into trouble, figure out how we best work together before taking on, what I assume to be, the larger task of warning the dwarves….. thoughts?”
You all head out south of Phandalin. The trek takes about 2 hours to get to the place marked on the map. The walk is slower than it seems as you try to speak with your new part members. As you arrive at the destination you see an old stone windmill surrounded by an iron fence. A large winged monster with a spiky tail is trying to knock down the windmill’s front door. An elderly human woman appears in a second-floor window, waves at you, and yells, “A little help?!. The monster turns its head towards you as you approach, you see what appears to be a winged lion with a humanoid face. Its body large body is covered in spikes that seem to come from its spiky tail. It leaps into the air and flies towards you.
"Nasty looking beast wouldn´t you say. Rather reminds me of my old uncle back home. It looks like we will have to really earn that gold. Go get him Skorli, I will be right behind you cheering." Aelyn says smiling as he readies his crossbow.
(OOC: Interesting, a manticore at first level. Btw, I wouldn´t mind DM rolling initiative for everyone saving us one round of posts before each battle :-)
Aelyn deftly moves just within 80´of the winged beast to some available cover like a rock, wether that be forewards or backwards, drops to prone, grabs the deck in his pocket and swiftly curses the winged beast. (Bonus action Hex Dex making the beast clumsier.) Then he fires a crossbowbolt at the winged beast from cover. Light crossbow:20 Damage:11 + necrotic 4
(OOC: As Aelyn acts before the winged beast I post Aelyns action now to not slow the game down.)
Aelyn there is a ruined building about 20 feet from you. You run inside and find a place behind a ruined wall that gives you half cover. Your crossbow bolt hits the manticore in the stomach and roars in pain and turns its attention to you.
((following Oberon's lead, I'll also post mine now, since I act before the enemy))
Brikabrak waggles his fingers over the small rocks in his hand; they don't appear any different at a glance, but when he throws them, you can see that they tear through the air like a bullet. (Brikabrak casts magic stone as a bonus action).
He then runs about 20 feet away from the group at an angle and lines up a shot on the lion-beast. (Brikabrak uses his action to ready a magic stone attack on the manticore when it gets within 60 feet).
Zal calmly slips his bow from his shoulder, nocks an arrow, draws, aims, and looses an arrow targeted at the torso joint of the beast’s wing hoping to cripple its flying abilities.
As the beast flies towards the group Zal puts an arrow in his bow and lets it loose. The arrow hits it in the chest but it seems to barely notice it. Aelyn from the ruined building shoots a crossbow bolt at a similar area and the manticore roars in pain. As it gets closer Brikabrak throughs one of his magically powered stones but it goes wide. Seeing its three attackers the manticore flicks its tail and a shortsword-sized spike is launched at Zal, Aelyn, and Brikabrak.
Attack on Zal - Attack: 18 Damage: Unable to parse dice roll.
Attack on Aelyn - Attack: 13 Damage: 10
Attack on Brikabrak - Attack: 8 Damage: 4
Aelyn I believe that means you are knocked unconscious as the tail spike pierces through your chest.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Skorli initially begins to move toward the creature, but then seeing the wound to Aelyn, he rushes to his friend's side. Dropping his hammer, he removes the spike, then grasps the holy amulet hanging from his neck and chants a brief prayer to the Moonmaiden, casting cure wounds on the half-elf.
The ruined wall giving him a false sense of security Aelyn reloads his crossbow and doesn´t notice the spike coming at him, hitting him square in the chest. "Oof" An sudden overwhelming pain sends Aelyn into unconsciousness.
------
The warmth of healing suddenly brings Aelyn back to the living, finding Skorli standing over him. He quickly realizes the battle with the winged beast is still raging outside the ruined house. "You came back for me. Thanks Skorli you´re a true lifesaver." He says to the dwarf with a warm smile. "Now let´s take this beast down before he hurts anyone else, shall we."He adds quickly and pats the dwarf on the shoulder.
(OOC: Could Aelyn be in full cover for now lying behind the ruined wall?)
