The sudden wave washed over Hansel, but luckily he had so much tanning oil on that it just repelled the water. His light cotton shirt was now wet and clung to his toned and tanned torso as he shook his head slowly a few times to shake the water off, with the sunlight glinting off the water drops as they sprayed out.
Davis stands firm as the wave washes over him. He looks to the water grimly, gripping his glaive as he steps forward to meet this threat. He allows the paniced watchers flee as they wish, as keeping them here would likely just be more problems than they would be worth come to a fight.
Trudie would pause abruptly, hmming and hawing to herself, wondering if she forgot something, the giant wave only lapping at her feet. “Couldn’t have been too important, right?” She’d shrug nonchalantly to herself.

The second tremor shuddered the island. One corner of the tavern collapsed, the timbers split and rent apart. Quinnie, yelling and swearing rushed everyone out. Cries of pain and anger filled the air, with some voices shouting to run to the bridge and others (other) demanding weapons and calling to fight the intruders (that one was silenced fast enough by his wife). Another wave struck the shores and return to the sea with a loud hissing.
The refugees - you could fully call the recently peaceful crowd like this now - swept across the island to the other side, rushing to the bridge. The desperate shouting and cries for help immediately let everyone know that the path was cut off - the earthquakes destroyed that seemingly indestructible construction. The crowd ran back to the docks with just three ships anchored there and crews only now returning to their posts.
Meanwhile, the sea devils moved over to the shallow waters and now were standing on the ground. At least 6ft tall each of them, with the dark scale marked with numerous black stripes, armed with spears and nets (though with their well visible teeth and claws additional weapons looked excessive) - they moved on the ground as fluidly as in the water. One - a particularly big, probably taller than Trudie's helper and armed with the intrinsically shaped blade - reached Donjah, that tried to cover people's attempting to leave the water, and in one move cut the spear in hunters hands in half and slashed across human's chest, leaving a deep open wound. The waters were too shallow for sharks to respond to the call of blood, but eyes of all sahuagin flickered at the scent of the hunter's blood. They rushed after the people.
A few sailors on the ship closest to the open sea suddenly yelled pointing in the water. Several massive tentacles emerged from the water, one carefully curled around a more slender sahuagin with bright yellow speckles in the tale. The "mount" and the "rider" were slowly moving toward the ships.
Dex save DC10 again, same conditions: "1" for Hansel and Yusko means to be washed to the sea, for Nameless - get 4 damage from the falling bricks and beams in the tavern.
A couple more mercs other than Davis are busy helping the panicking people out of the water and to the ships. Davis himself is on the same spot - 30ft away from the water - safe from the waves, closest sahuagin (S4, the big one) is 50ft away from him.
The bridge is broken and though everyone around here can swim and it's only 50ft to the mainland, sharks are circling the island (those with the sharpest eyes could spot a particularly big fin in the distance).
Hunters voluntarily or not so much engage with sahuagin now, but do not look like a match to sea devils.
S4 and "his" hunter (Donjah) are locked in melee (hunter is severely wounded). S3 threw a net at the next hunter (the girl) and restrained her.
This time the wave catches Hansel out, and he ungraciously falls into the surf. Still it isn't enough to wash away his positive attitude or his winning smile, and as he lifts himself up to a kneeling position he grabs a handful of wet sand and looks for all the world like a happy kid playing at the beach. Looking towards the tentacles moving toward the docks, Hansel chants a prayer, throws the handful of sodden sand... and the water all around where the tentacles protrude from the surface moves to either side!
Casting Control Water for the Part Water effect centered on O/S5. Water presumably parts to the north and south.
Obeying the order of the young man, the waters suddenly parted, revealing a not-so-deep ocean floor, covered with all manner of sea life forms (including a small reef-shark) and a part of a coral reef. The very surprised giant octopus with a no less shocked sahuagin in one of the tentacles found themselves in the middle of the air and dropped down with quite an audible thud. The sailors gave out a few horrified yells but realized fast enough the trench was not made by the sea devils and continued to work on evacuation.
With the chaos on the shores, the monster probably did not guess the direction of the attack, but if Hansel ever so much as heard about sahuagin, he would know to expect anything from these creatures.
The sahuagin in the middle (S2) did not bother with catching its prey with the net but instead made a huge leap, caught up with the hunter (H2) and unleashed the series of spear strikes:

The bus girl lifts her hand crossbow free of its storage in a quick moment, and lifts it up, aiming it out across the water at the lizard folk riding the Octopus. She focus', letting her hunters instinct flow into her and zero in all her attention on that one enemy. Death would come swiftly for it.
She released a bolt at the unsuspecting creature, unaware it was already her target, and then another and another as her killer instincts kick in.
Dread Ambusher feature: At the start of your first turn of each combat, your walking speed increases by 10 ft., which lasts until the end of that turn. If you take the Attack action on that turn, you can make one additional weapon attack as part of that action, dealing an extra 1d8 damage of the weapon’s damage type on a hit.
Assassinate feature: You have advantage on attack rolls against any creature that hasn’t taken a turn in the combat yet, and any hit you score against a creature that is surprised is a critical hit.
Alert: You gain a +5 bonus to initiative, you can't be surprised while you are conscious, and other creatures don’t gain advantage on attack rolls against you as a result of being unseen by you.
To be fair, sahuagin look more like fish, than lizards, but right now the species was unimportant. Even though the panicking crowd did not allow the girl a good aim, she did hit the target. And not just hit, but killed outright, leaving the exotic mount to crawl alone to the closest wall of water. Should it be less scary, the crowd would roar in joy, still, the death of the sea rider was noticed and the busgirl got her share of happy cheering.
Even if other attackers saw the death of the sister-in-arms, they did not stop. S1 attacked the hunter in front of him (H1):
As the chaos continued to blanket the island around her and the splashing waves, Grandma felt that familiar surge of adrenaline start to flow. She was starting to feel young again.
Dex Save: 8
The waves would trip Trudie this time, but a childlike giggle would leave her lips as the water splashes her. She'd slowly pick herself up out of the sand with her staff.
Movement: Get up
This gave Trudie time to witness the young man kneeling on the beach part waves, "Oh my..." A smile would crack the old tortle woman's face as she felt a little spurt of inspiration. "Are we feeling a little thorny this morning?" Perking up with ambition, her posture would straighten, as much as it could anyway. She'd turn her attention back to the hunters on the beach as she'd lift her staff. Waving it in the air, she'd call out with a few slow bats of her lashes. "Yoohoo! Brave hunters! Could y'all come a little closer on shore for lil ol' me?" It truly was in their best interest.
Free action: Can I warn hunters to essentially disengage to back up for her attack?
They'd have time to decide as Grandma Trudie would settle her staff and move to bring it down. Humming delightfully to herself in some old gibberish (druidic), she'd jab an end of her staff into the sand with one hand and then reach out with the other, as if drawing a line over the sahuagin. And when she'd reach the end of the line, she'd snap.
Action: Staff of the Woodlands - 6 Charges Casting: Wall of Thorns Placement ideal: A thick concentrated wall lined up engulfing all visible sahuagin along the beach and hopefully leaving a good thickness around them to force them to have to walk through. Thought: Could it work as a break wall too? :O Edit: oh maybe not. It's not as big as I think it is :3
The tortle would then let out a sharp whistle and a shield would animate to life from a crest that doubled as a clasp for her cloak.
Yukon had no intention in hunting sharks today. He had just wanted to make some coin, gain some stories, stitch up some gnarly wounds but no damn fish people had to come ashore. He looks back to the bar and an idea comes.
If dex save wasn't needed and he has full movement he will rush up next to S4 and the hunter. He will nod to the hunter and then lash out with three strikes at S4 and touch the hunter once using flurry of blows. If he was knocked prone bonus action dash to get him to same spot and then only two attacks against S4.
Taking a deep breath he launches an assault on the creature with a series of hardened finger jabs staring near the throat and then moving lower down the torso. Then he open palm slaps the hunter near his heart release some of his ki into him.
Attack: 27 Damage: 9 + sneak attack damage 8
Attack 2: 23 Damage: 6
Ki point spent on flurry of blows
Flurry Attack: 19 Damage: 6
Subbing 2nd flurry strike for healing hand to the hunter giving him 7 health
"Don't worry bud, I'll start ya a tab." He says after slapping some healing into the hunter.
Trudie was certainly close enough for hunters to hear her. But even if she would not call - the sudden thorny vines springing from the water and engulfing sahuagin was a good enough incentive to step away first, and then probably run too.
The fish monsters were silent in the air, but the jerking movement when they tried to free themselves from the entangling vegetation, leaving on the branches blood, pieces of skin and scales.
On the far side of the wall, before the thorns pierced the flesh of the strongest of the attackers, the seemingly gentle healer unleashed a series of blows at the monster. Finishing that attack with a friendly precise hit at some point on the hunter's body that miraculously stopped the bleeding.
The surprised young man touched the wound, then gratefully smiled at Yusko.
Meanwhile, the octopus was still trying to reach the wall of water. It's hard to say with the octopuses, but unlikely the animal, left without the master, would attack any ship.
Davis!
(Fellow mercs are trying to fit all the people on the ships. Sahuagin (the closest 40ft away from him) are at the moment stuck inside the Wall of Thorns.
Davis frowns, not quite certain how easily this issue will be to deal with. The earthquakes have him more concerned than the visible threats, as they mean something bigger than just fishmen are behind this. He steps forward, moving towards the enemies he can see on the beach, even with the wall of thornes there to hold them.
As he steps forward he grows in size, soon standing well over 12 feet in height, and holding his glaive easily in his hands.
Hunters did not wait for the sea devils to get out of the thorn bushes and finally got to the drier part of the beach, not running away though, and keeping the line.
Some silent killers in the thorns - including the bigger one - freed themselves and now were searching for the way around the sudden obstacle. However, at that moment the island shuddered again. This time it was not just a tremor! The land visually tilted first to the west, then with a swing to the east and only then returned to the horizontal position, but everyone on the beach found themselves hips-deep in the water now (waist-deep for Yusko and H4). There were no doubts - the island was sinking! Shark's fins in the deeper water suddenly get unpleasantly close.
Dex save DC13 at the beginning of the turn or get prone.
The island tilts, and Hansel again ends up flat in the surf, although he manages to make it look good. This time though as he rises from the water he stands and makes his way toward the tortle. As he does so another prayer is chanted while clutching the pendant on his neck, and a floating, glowing object appears beside one of the sahuagin. It is not until the object begins spanking the sahuagin that it becomes obvious that it is some kind of divinely-conjured riding crop...
Bonus Action: Spiritual Weapon at 3rd level Attack against S4: 25 Damage: 13
Move: Stand from prone (15') and move toward Grandma Trudie (15')
Action: If the majority of the hunters look like they are severely wounded, then Hansel will use Channel Divinity: Preserve Life to heal them. But if it looks like this would be a waste (i.e. if they aren't below half their max HP), then he will just use his action to Dash further up the beach. If the island is sinking, then he will probably want to retrieve his belongings (he currently has no weapons/armor/equipment except for his holy symbol and Necklace of Prayer Beads.)
Channel Divinity: Preserve Life As an action, you can restore 45 HP. Choose any creatures within 30 ft. of you, and divide those hit points among them. This feature can restore a creature to no more than half of its hit point maximum. You can’t use this feature on an undead or a construct.
The healing light from the young cleric was certainly appreciated and much needed by at least two deeply wounded hunters and the semi-transparent weapon in the air did give a pause to the tall sahuagin ready to get around of thorny fence. The creature bared shark-like teeth watching all the preys moving to higher ground and then looked with a satisfaction at the raising water.
S2 made up its mind and got on the other side of the thorns, slowly sinking too, but did not rush to the beach, probably waiting for water to made work for him.
The bus-girl looks waspishly at the waves of water rushing onto the island as the ground is rapidly shifting. She staggers to stay on her feet. (Dex save vs DC 13 : 16)
Nimbly keeping her footing, she rushes out of the doorway, leaping smoothly up onto the bar and then turns and leaps, pulling herself up onto the roof of the building. (let me know if I need a roll or to consume an action to climb up onto the roof).
Then she aims her crossbow towards the octopus. She shifts her Hunter's Mark onto the Octopus.
If she hasn't had to use her action to get onto the roof, then she fires twice at the Octopus:
Like a teentort in a wavepool, granny readies herself for the incoming wave and gives her left hip a gentle pat, "Lucky Lefty, don't fail me now!" Trudie amps herself up.
Dex Save(DC13): 11
"Oopalie!" Prepared or not, the elderly tortle still gets swept by another wave of giggles. Taking her staff she picks herself up again.
By the time Trudie finds her way to her feet, she'd also find herself accompanied by the young cleric. The crack of his conjured crop would grab her attention in time to witness a heavenly spanking. "Giddy up!" Grins a giddy granny.
With a waft of the wise woman's wooden staff against the wave, she flicks a fleck of fluid forward. "Fear this fanny foes!" Fiery and fierce, she focuses the flow to follow, further forcing fins through fence. (Sorry not sorry XD)
Casting: Tidal Wave Dex DC16: 8 (Idealy focus on the grouped ones and pushing them back through the thorns? Extra damage?)
(I misread the details for Spiritual Weapon - it doesn't get 2d8 damage until it gets to Level 4, which I'm not willing to cast it at, so we'll stick with a Level 2 spell that does 1d8)
The riding crop continues to spank the naughty fish-folk (Attack: 11 Damage: 8) while Hansel heads into the building to retrieve his belongings. In a time of crisis, difficult decisions must be made. The trusty steel quarterstaff known as The Ugly Stick is the first thing to grab. A designer backpack full of his potions, scrolls and travelling gear is next. He hoists his shield up and over his shoulder with the pack. If it's possible to grab the large chest that contains his plate armor, he will drag that along with his other hand. But with dismay he realises that he won't be able to bring the rest: the even larger chest containing all his clothing, including those six new sets of evening wear; the open wooden case that carries all his perfumes, moisturisers, hairbrushes, and a huge host of other cosmetics; his collection of mirrors that he had so painstakingly set up and adjusted around his quarters; all would have to stay. Hansel sighed deeply, hoping that Sune would forgive him for making such a great sacrifice, but knowing that in the midst of a catastrophe other matters had to take priority... like getting rid of those hideous fish-monsters!
(OOC: I'm happy to go with whatever... if Hansel has to abandon some of his inventory, or even the entire lot, then so be it. But if it doesn't break the narrative too much, then it would be great to retain his stuff. Certainly I'm not suggesting that he suddenly don his armor and shield - in fact he wouldn't even have use of his hands if he is carrying all that gear. But let me know what you think is a fair thing.)

Davis tries to stay on his feet with the rolling of the ground... Dex save: 13
Unable to do so, the massive 12-foot tall man falls into the water, but then simply stands again, water streaming out from inside the thick adamantine armor he wears. Seeing that the water is likely not a safe place to be standing, he strides back towards dry land, holding his glaive ready to attack anything that comes too close. (No readied action, taking a dash to move away and back towards the 'high' ground.) He will use his reaction to either attack anything that gets close to him, first choice, otherwise to use his cloud rune on some attack against someone within 30 feet of him. he also uses a bonus action to activate his Hill rune, which gives him resistance to normal bashing, slashing, and piercing damage.

As he does so another prayer is chanted while clutching the pendant on his neck, and a floating, glowing object appears beside one of the sahuagin. It is not until the object begins spanking the sahuagin that it becomes obvious that it is some kind of divinely-conjured riding crop...
Bonus Action: Spiritual Weapon at 3rd level
Attack against S4: 25 Damage: 13
Move: Stand from prone (15') and move toward Grandma Trudie (15')
Action: If the majority of the hunters look like they are severely wounded, then Hansel will use Channel Divinity: Preserve Life to heal them. But if it looks like this would be a waste (i.e. if they aren't below half their max HP), then he will just use his action to Dash further up the beach. If the island is sinking, then he will probably want to retrieve his belongings (he currently has no weapons/armor/equipment except for his holy symbol and Necklace of Prayer Beads.)
As an action, you can restore 45 HP. Choose any creatures within 30 ft. of you, and divide those hit points among them. This feature can restore a creature to no more than half of its hit point maximum. You can’t use this feature on an undead or a construct.
How does a red dragon blow out the candles on its birthday cake?
The healing light from the young cleric was certainly appreciated and much needed by at least two deeply wounded hunters and the semi-transparent weapon in the air did give a pause to the tall sahuagin ready to get around of thorny fence. The creature bared shark-like teeth watching all the preys moving to higher ground and then looked with a satisfaction at the raising water.
S2 made up its mind and got on the other side of the thorns, slowly sinking too, but did not rush to the beach, probably waiting for water to made work for him.

Everyone! All S1 and octopus are going to do - moving forward. The island continues to sink.

Attack: 16 Damage: 20 + 5 Hunter's Mark.
Attack: 12 Damage: 18 + 5 Hunter's Mark.
What's the difference between a Wizard and a Sorcerer?
Class.

(Idealy focus on the grouped ones and pushing them back through the thorns? Extra damage?)
just an unstable unicorn.
