You come awake in the dark. Thin shafts of light spear down from cracks in the ceiling, illuminating small circles nearby. The familiar ebb and flow of a wooden floor beneath you and a rhythmic creaking in time tells you that you are at sea. Odd, you don't remember boarding a ship. You push past the pounding headache and sickly taste of cheap wine in your mouth to cast into your memories, trying to dredge up something of last night.
Ringing laughter of a warmly lit tavern room. The heady joy of excess, the scents of rich stewed meat and perfumes of lovely man- and woman-servants swirling about bringing decadence to your table. Then a fading into darkness. A faint oily taste of nutmeg on your tongue implies the use of a drug or poison to put you in a state to be taken advantage of.
Before you can do much more that sit up, several pairs of heavy footsteps enter the darkroom from a staircase. A harsh lantern light stabs painfully through the darkness. At the head of a group of seven, a human man with ink black hair and a wicked yellow expression that might be mistaken for pain but is clearly an attempt at a smile bruising his face. He cracks the whip in his hand above your head,
"Still abed with the sun over the yardarm? On your feet, ye filthy swabs! Get up on deck and report for duty before Cap'n Harrigan flays your flesh into sausage skins and has Fishguts fry ye up for breakfast!"
Welcome aboard the Wormwood
___________________________
Greetings. I have decided to make another attempt at running a 5E version of Skull & Shackles. Full disclosure, I have tried to run this game here twice before and failed both times. Partially due to the standard falling away of interest from players that sometimes happens with play by posts. Partially due to some personal mental health issues I was having at the time that caused me to become overwhelmed and just vanish from the internet for a bit.
But, I think things are in a place where I can come back to this now...and actually run it...which would be great because this is one of my favorite adventure paths like ever.
Skull & Shackles is a Pathfinder Adventure Path set in the Shackles, an area of the Inner Sea with deserted islands, reefs, shoals, and all manner of other impassable waterways that make it ripe for piracy. You have just been enlisted, against your will, onto the Wormwood, a pirate ship under the command of Barnabas Harrigan, one of the most notorious Free Captains (that's pronounced pirate) of the Shackles.
If you are interested in playing please submit a Level 1 Character that may have been unfortunate enough to run afoul of the "recruiting team". Essentially anyone that would have been accosted at the Formidably Maid or elsewhere in Port Peril last night. For example, a Warforged is less likely since they wouldn't have been eating or drinking the poison. But if you can write the backstory that makes it work then I will consider it.
Here's the nitty gritty:
Race: Any published (must be poisonable or otherwise press-gangable) Abilities Scores: (Standard Array or 2d4+7 six times) I use 2d4+7 because it gives people the randomness that they are looking for while still mostly generating stats that are inline with the standard array (all stats are between 9 & 15 and the average is 12.5 Class: Any published Background: I recommend you use one of the custom backgrounds found here. These are pretty much the same as certain published backgrounds, but tweaked and renamed to be like the campaign specific traits from pathfinder. I have them all homebrewed in my personal collection, so if someone with content sharing joins our game you will be able to add yours to your character sheet after you are selected. Of you could just build it using the custom background tool. Equipment: Standard starting equipment, make note on your character sheet of what you have, but know that when you are first kidnapped you are going to be searched and most of your belongings will be taken...so it won't actually be starting equipment per se, but it is important to know what you had. Proficiencies: The one proficiency that is not often picked up that I think would be valuable for someone to have is Vehicle (Water). Other than that, just think about what would be good for someone sailing at sea to have and choose wisely, the campaign is probably about 50% social with skills and role play and 50% combat, so sleeping on skills would make for a bad time. Posting Frequency: Available to post once per day at a minimum. I work Friday - Monday and can post multiple times on those days if needed. My availability Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday will probably only be once per day.
Your submission should include:
Name: Race: Class: Abilities Scores: Brief Background: Link to Character Sheet (any online character sheet is fine if you are out of DDB slots):
I plan to keep recruiting open until next Friday. After that we will look at what the fishing nets have dragged in and make a decision on if we need to keep recruiting or if we are ready to start. Hope to start on

Sasha Vakaris had lived most of her life at sea, raised by the infamous Free Captain Blackstorm aboard the equally infamous The Furious Kraken. Blackstorm had raised her as her own and she learned everything a pirate should know by an early age. She didn't see herself become captain of the Furious Kraken though as one fateful day chelish battleships hunted them into the Eye of Abendego. The ship and it's crew went down but Sasha survived, saved by Besmara herself, or so she thought. Brief Background: Obirith was born and raised on the docks, working in the local shipyard from a young age alongside his father and elder brother. As soon as he was able to use a hammer and nails he was set on the path of a ship Wright, using his small size to patch hard to reach areas at first. With each year both his size and skill increased, soon landing himself a small amount of notice among the local sailors as a talented shipwright. This soon paid off well as he was able to take jobs on several ships, being able to travel. Little did he know on his last trip to help repair a shipn as it traveled he ended up on Harrigan's after a long night if drinking.

I was really thinking a swashbuckling Cleric would be fun. Quite unsure if I would want Besmara's Blessing or simply be a healer-Cook on the boat! I'm gunna try to decide where I'd like to go with it. In fact, I really like the idea of a Water Genasi-Tempest Cleric who's one of the ships cooks :)

Brief Background (Inheritor): Reese was born to a tavern wench in a nameless port in the Shackles, an ignoble birth to be sure. Yet his mother was comely and hale enough to attract the eye of many a free captain in her time--though his parentage is far from certain. Unseen at the time of his birth, though, were miniscule tattoos of elemental power adorning his body. Fire and Ice for his wrists, acid and lightning for his ankles, and poison for his neck. As he grew, the markings grew more prominent, and his mother sent him far away to avoid the superstitious pirates. Eventually finding his place in a distant monastery, Reese grew into young adulthood and learned to discipline his body and spirit, though he was no closer to understanding his birthright tattoos. On his 21st birthday, he returned to the Shackles to track down his mother, eventually ending up on the wrong side of a tainted ale mug...
If you end up with stats that are clearly worse than standard array feel free to swap over to the standard 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8.
Course, 15, 14, 12, 11, 11, 11 isn't all that much worse. Some people might think no neg modifiers and lots of opportunity for 1 point boosts is better.
But yeah, just because you rolled you are under no obligation to keep it. If you prefer standard array over what you roll that is fine.

Antonio does have one relic that mysteriously connects him to his heritage: A trinket. The monastery has been good to him and instilled a sense of duty and hard work. Antonio eventually was called to the ocean like many of the Port Peril inhabitants and started his life working the docks, unloading and loading the many cargo ships and eventually finding his way onto his first ship as a carpenter. Name: Vireil. Race: Half-Elf. Class: Ranger (Haven't decided on a subclass yet. Drakewarden/Beast Master, most likely.) Abilities Scores: 141113131110. Brief Background: (Ilizmagorti Native). Vireil grew up in Ilizmagorti. As unfortunate as that may be for a child, it also allows them to develop a certain set of useful skills like how to avoid being seen by ruffians or a violent drunk pirate; how to tread on unstable rooftops and tight ropes to avoid walking in an objectively more dangerous place among the crowds on the streets below, and more. Another benefit of living in such an eclectic place is that you catch on to many languages. That is almost a given, of course, as almost every person you encounter speaks a different language, and of course, the duty of learning their language falls on the natives. Lastly, when living in such a dangerous place, one must know whom to avoid and how to defend themselves. Be it by running from a Human who's up to no good or a mean Goblin, or if you're backed into a corner, pulling out a dagger and making it clear nobody is doing anything to you without getting cut in the process. However, despite all those wonderful skills, one acquires simply because they were born in that certain city, many wish to leave eventually. One such person, a female Half-Elf named Vieril, had enough of this port's way of life, and using questionably-earned funds, she bought herself a place on a ship to another place. "Port Peril", they said. Well, not a promising name, but it can't possibly be worse than Ilizmagorti, right? Arriving at night, a welcome party awaited at a place called "Formidably Maid". Not for her, of course, but the entire ship was invited, and who will say no to free food? Probably someone who thought all the bad people remained in Ilizmagorti. Vireil, who made a grave mistake. Name: Glafsee Blackbird Race: Goblin Class: Cleric Abilities Scores: 14 14 15 12 14 11 Brief Background: Glafsee's whole clan was wiped out by an adventuring party when she was six and she was only spared when a compassionate rock gnome saw the slaughter and the genuine fear in Glafsee's eyes and hid the young goblin. Due to this act of charity Glafsee forsook her cruel goblin upbringing and adopted the gnomish god Segojan Earthcaller as her deity in remembrance of how she was hidden and saved in the earth. Glafsee's new path caused her to be rejected by fellow goblins and it soon became apparent that there was no long term place for her among the gnomes so she fled to sea and there works to patch sailor and ship as she explores the world in the hopes of finding a place where she might belong. He had started communing with the wind in a strange language (Celestial), and was perceived to be mad. He was put out to sea in a small boat, where he was picked up through extreme good ‘fortune’. He was kept around as a lucky omen and learnt to sail, but came ashore recently in Port Peril unsure what the future held. Apparently it is more sea travel…
Wow...lots of interest very quickly, I am flattered.
I like to keep a running list, helps me stay organized and also informs other applicants what has already been submitted. Ultimately I find it makes for more varied applications.
So far no Artificers, Druids, Paladins, or Wizards, but a little bit of everything else. Very interesting.
Going through character sheets I noticed that the background information is only visible if you own the character sheet. Maybe if you are in the same campaign? Anyway...to make sure I don't hire 2 surgeons or something, If I didn't list a background above or if I got your background wrong (guessed from context on some of these) could you please post it. Generally it is best if there is a variety of backgrounds for the game...but none of them are built in such a way as to NEED other players to select specific backgrounds. I think I figured most of them out.
((Yes, the Description tab that contains background, physical appearance, and Traits/Ideals/Bonds/Flaws are hidden other than to the owner. Once characters join a campaign, that tab will also be visible to the DM.))

Reese took the “Inheritor” background associated with your Buccaneer’s Blood option, and he has some skills with carpentry as well that might translate to ship repair if needed. As a monk, he has to be lawful, but I am seeing that as more of the ascetic self-discipline lawful than anything else, given his upbringing in the Shackles.

One of his favorite jobs onboard is to go up in the rigging or the lookout position while the ship is underway. It's the closest that he's found to flying... the unfulfilled dream of many a kenku.

Name: Antonio Gambini
Race: Variant Human
Class: Fighter
Abilities Scores: 13 16 14 10 8 13
Brief Background: Buccaneer’s Blood. (willing to work with DM to make the story work) EDIT*. Antonio was brought up as an orphan as a baby, dropped off at a local monastery in Port Peril. He knows nothing about his parents. The clergy who raised him knows his true origins, but refuse to tell him to keep both Antonio and the monastery safe. After returning to Port Peril, he undoubtedly found himself in the Formidably Maiden drinking and waking up at the hands of seven individuals with no belongings…including his trinket…

Name: Vireil.
Race: Half-Elf.
Class: Ranger (Haven't decided on a subclass yet. Drakewarden/Beast Master, most likely.)
Abilities Scores: 14 11 13 13 11 10.

Varielky | Emma
Name: Glafsee Blackbird
Race: Goblin
Class: Cleric
Abilities Scores: 14 14 15 12 14 11
Brief Background: Glafsee's whole clan was wiped out by an adventuring party when she was six and she was only spared when a compassionate rock gnome saw the slaughter and the genuine fear in Glafsee's eyes and hid the young goblin. (I still need to build out the equipment and background per the ship's surgeon template but it is late right now).

Name: Grudnik
Race: Hobgoblin
Class: Sorcerer (Storm Sorcery)
Ability Scores: 11 12 10 9 12 12 - change to standard array
Background: Joujou Man: Grudnik was ostracised from his clan when he stopped taking orders from superiors and instead encouraged insubordination in the name of a perceived ‘gift’.

Obirith is going with the Shipwright background from Ghosts of Saltmarsh. Figured it wouldn't hurt to have someone to fix the boat.
