D&D Experience I've been playing D&D since the early 1980s. Dropped it after college, picked it up again when my kids wanted to play, and I fell right back into the groove. I play/DM in an IRL group, I play in a number of games asynchronously online (here and on Discord) and my love of character creation comes second only to my love of roleplaying.
Have you played/at all heard of FL before? I have not, but by the gods I am looking into it now! I've played FASA's 1879 a couple of times, which seems remotely related, though this is really much more... delicious. ;)
Time Zone I'm on US Central Time (so GMT -6)
Concepts/Ideas you might already have(i.e. race, class, background, etc.) Okay, I'm dying to play a character I conceived of for another setting, so we'd have to do some work to shoehorn her in here, but it could be fun! Her name is Tuuli, and in 5e terms she's an air genasi arcane trickster rogue, but we can work on that. Here's a pic I snagged from Pinterest:
What I like best about her is who she is. Tuuli is happy, bright, sarcastic, a heavy drinker, a hopeless romantic, and a true friend. She's agile, slim, pretty, striking, and a doofus. She's a thief, but not an ambitious one. She's just looking to get by, to live a good life, to have things she wants and stay out of serious trouble. Her heart gets her in trouble regardless, both the part that makes her help people, and the part that makes her fall madly in love over and over again. She's a denizen of this world, through and through, but a spirit that refuses to bow to it. Instead, she embraces it, and expects it to embrace her back. She's funny and a bit slapstick, but serious when the tacks are down.
Here's the background stuff I'd be interested in including: She's a bit of a guttersnipe, rejected by her born family, so her found/chosen family is everything to her. She's a pickpocket by trade, though she's been involved in some Bad Stuff, mostly because her friends have been and she's nothing if not loyal. She has experience with the criminal underground, and she's not unknown to some of the operators. Her involvement in "doing crimes" could be what put her in New Newgate.
Here's the 5e stuff we'd likely have to jettison or negotiate: I like that she is blue-skinned and blue-haired, and that she has something of an ethereal quality (light footed, a disembodied breeze playing with her hair). I like that she has a little bit of magic but isn't a 'caster,' per se. I imagine her magic to be an extension of her genasi qualities, I'd pick spells that have an air-quality to them, like Gust, Mage Hand, or Feather Fall. She'd have the Lucky Feat at some point, because that is entirely in character.
Questions
Mechanically, are we using 5e? I think so, but it is not entirely clear, and given the flexibility of the dice feature here, we could do whatever, I suppose.
The background FL stuff I've found doesn't mention a criminal element (everyone being shady notwithstanding!). Is there anything organized beyond the average Victorian cutpurse?
From your intro, "Greetings and salutations, ladies, gentlemen, boys, girls, neithers, boths, and in-betweens!" I think there won't be an issue here, but Tuuli is very much attracted only to traditionally feminine persons/traits. Cool?
Anything else you want to add(fun facts, misc. comments, etc.) I played Tuuli for a few weeks on a Discord West Marches style server, so I've developed who she is a bit, before the record keeping became too much (we can talk about the characteristics of West Marches Discord servers at another time, if you like). But I love her. And so will you. ;)
My heart is set on role-playing (my IRL group are incorrigibly mechanically-minded dice goblins, but I love them anyway). I hope that is part of the vision for this game. I love the interplay between characters and NPCs, and I like writing. I enjoy building in-game relationships, and while romantic relationships are part of that (and part of Tuuli) I have no desire to role-play anything that happens beyond the bedroom door, as it were. Ick.
And, of course, I understand if you are beset by too many amazing character proposals, many of which fit your vision, your world, and your plan better than Tuuli does. If nothing else I just spent a fun half hour exercising my brain and playing in Tuuli's world again, one of my favorite places. Thanks!

We're using 5e, yes. After giving it some thought, I'm probably going to make things a little more magical than they actually are in FL, to make things easier for setting a D&D game in it.
As I mentioned earlier, the backgrounds there are just in addition to those backgrounds that already exist. Organized crime is very much a thing, most notably under the Cheery Man, London's foremost crime lord.
No problems whatsoever!
