You know you are dreaming, but the dream is different. The dream would be more acurate to call a Dreaming...something is reaching out. Something is communicating to you within the Dream. Someth...Someone is inside your head.
In the Dream, you stand in a gray misty landscape, entirely non-descript save for a barren tree. In the tree sits a raven, eyeing you from the side of its head. It opens its mouth and a human voice proceeds forth. "Hello. I apologize for reaching out to you in this way, but for the time being my identity must remain hidden. Even if you accept my offer and come under my employ communication will occur in the Dream. It is the only way to be sure. The only way to be safe."
The bird ruffles its feathers as if trying to gather more heat around itself as a chill breeze blows...but there is no breeze. Only stillness.
"I am reaching out to a cadre of talented individuals like yourself, the offcasts of an unwitting society that does not realize they throw out gold with the dross. I have a series of tasks that need doing, and individuals such as yourself are just the right kind. Fair compensation, favors, and what not of course available. If you want to know more meet the others at the Sleeping Dragon Inn in one week's time. Rooms will be provided and I will contact those of you that have said yes from there."
Forming out of the fog is an inn you recognize from the south side of the city. You approach the door without consciously deciding to do so. As you do, 5 other figures made of fog walk up to the door with you. As the door opens a bright white light pours out, and you awake in your bed, covered in a cold sweat.

Welcome. I am wanting to run a game that is a frame story to use some of the one-shots I have accrued over the years. Essentially this will be a series of missions that may or may not be related. (The one shots themselves are unrelated, but maybe I can manage to weave a basic story around them). Think Charlie's Angels...but DnD.
If you are interested, please see the character creation guidelines below. I am doing something just a little bit different because I think it will make for an interesting story.
Creation Guidelines:
Races: Because I think it would make for interesting side stories, every character must be some kind of plane- or arcane- touched humanoid. This means available races for this campaign are: Tiefling, Genasi, Aasimar, Kalashtar, Shifter, Simic Hybrid, Dhampir, Hexblood, Reborn, Variant Human or Custom Lineage with one of the "Touched" Feats (see below). If you select Variant Human or Custom Lineage your appearance needs to indicate how you are "touched". Custom Lineage will be the path to take if you want to play one of the other standard races that is different in some way. (For example if you want to play a Demon-touched Dwarf maybe you take Custom Lineage with the Eldritch Adept feat to pick up Fiendish Vigor Invocation.)
In the homebrew world I am creating these touched people are outcasts of society. Think Mutants in X-Men. Some of them may pass as a normal race...others are obviously different. But if their heritage is discovered then they are shunned.
Touched Feats: For me touched feats are feats that imply some kind of heritage if taken at level 1...the obvious ones are Fey Touched and Shadow Touched. But, I also include Aberrant Dragonmark, Eldritch Adept, Elemental Adept, Gift of the ____ Dragon, Telekinetic, or Telepathic. If you think there is a feat that I missed that you would like to be your level 1 feat ask me and explain how it implies an ancestral heritage and I will consider.
Starting Level: 1
Abilities Scores: I like everyone to be on the same footing, and for level 1 that means Point buy or Standard Array. I know rolling for stats is more fun...but it becomes less fun if you are the member of the party that rolled like dog turds.
Background: As implied by the IC text, you are the outcasts of society...so it is unlikely that you have like the Courtier or Knight backgrounds (for example). Please select a background that makes sense for the story as so far presented.
Is there anything I missed? Ask me and I will answer. I am at my PC all day (7a - 6p) Friday - Monday...so I can probably respond pretty quickly.

Backstory - Specifically why are you saying yes to the Dreamer?: Daveth was once a normal half elf who had a normal life for the most part. He grew up and married, having a daughter after a few years. Things went well for him until a plague ravaged the land. His wife fell sick and passed away before anything could be done. His daughter fell ill as well but did not die right away. Desperate to save her, he traveled the lands to where a powerful being was said to live. The being turned out to be a vampire who wpuld to cure his daughter but only if he offered to serve. Upon signing the the contract with blood he was bitten and given the the partial effects of a vampire as well as a gift of magical and necromantic power.
Used to nightmares due to the vampiric blood, Daveth was surprised by the Dreamer offering a chance after some of the things he did while serving his master. Seeing this as a chance to possibly do some good despite knowing he was bound to his contract he goes to the inn to see just what the stranger who had spoken to him can offer.
Backstory - Specifically why are you saying yes to the Dreamer?: Fickle and flamboyant, Oridee was plucked out of the gutter as a young teenager to fight in Master Rollo's underground fighting club. Undoubtedly, she was not expected to survive long, but she exhibited innate talent with the rapier they had given her, and shortly managed to take down several larger opponents with impeccable timing, quick reflexes, and dramatic flair. She quickly discovered how to command the audience's attention with mesmerizing performances, and she soon became a fan favorite, with large crowds coming to each match.
Although she relishes each fight and enjoys the performative yet risky nature of her work , she is flattered and intrigued by the offer proposed by the Dreamer, and wonders if it is time to utilize her skills in other arenas as well. She decides to visit the Sleeping Dragon
Backstory - Specifically why are you saying yes to the Dreamer?: a lifetime of training in the psionic arts had Brought a philosophic inquiry to the surface, one the dreamer proposes having answers to. What is the root of all conscioness? Is there a godhead behind the mask of all beings, a far reaching being, consciousness-tentacles reaching across time and space, who’s tip-ends are each of our’s minds. This suspicion and possibility, as well the investigation of it, has brought Gilderai to a place of deep gratitude and curiosity, ever seeking the experiences that would bring him closer to the capital T truth behind the manifestations of mind.
Backstory - Polly was abandoned in the woods at a very early age. She survived largely due to the kindness of the other woodland beings and adapted more to their lifestyle than that of people. When the dream came to her, Polly Wog no more thought of refusing it than she does refusing to eat when hungry or drink when thirsty. One lives by the demands of nature, adapts to them, coexists with them... or is squashed by them.
Besides, she's had dreams of returning to those who abandoned her and showing them the kindnesses of the woods some day. This may be that day?
((Imagining Polly as naive, not very bright, not very socially adept... but having instincts about who she can trust, when to run away, and when to be nothing but fierce. Imagining much of her conversations, her side anyway, done telepathically. She is not used to vocalizing words. ))
Backstory - Specifically why are you saying yes to the Dreamer?: Daphina has always been rejected. Rejected by parents, rejected by siblings, so-called friends and neighbors. It got to be so bad she had to run away and live off the land by herself. It was a very lonely lifestyle and honestly, she is sick of it. She talks to all sorts of animals that she sees, even the plants on her worst days. She’d do anything to be among some sort of civilization. She also understands how ironic her yearning is, as crowds make her nervous. Always have. She feels she has a small window of happiness for her to exist within and she fears she’ll never find that window. She has found some peace where she lives with all the animals and when she has the Dream… she knew she had to find out more. When the dream started, she thought it was her friend, Edgar, the crow that was finally talking back to her. Maybe it was? Maybe Edgar is telling her to go to Sleeping Dragon Inn? Either way, she needs to find out what awaits her there.

You could be a human that has a Gith in his ancestry somewhere though...Human or Custom Lineage with either the Telekinetic or Telepathic feat. Heck, if you would like we could even collaborate on a Homebrew Gith Touched feat for you to take. Would be like Fey or Shadow Touched. At fiirst blush I am thinking but would grant Mage hand and a first level spell of your choice from either the Abjuration or Transmutation schools since that is what schools Jump and Shield are from.
That would be pretty similar to Telekinetic, but with a little bit more customizability.

Name: Robin Race: Custom Lineage (Fey Touched) Class (Subclass planned): Artificer 1 (Multiclassing in wizard, Chronomancer at level 2) Stats: Point buy Background: Lorehold Student Backstory
Robin had the life she dreamed of. She was accepted to a prestigious school for magic, had those she considered friends, and had nothing but a life of greatness to look forward to. She exceled in her studies, learning things easily and quickly. Even her teachers said she was a prodigy, and would do great things with her life. This all changed though. towards the end of her first year of school she was suddenly pulled from her class. She was told something had happened, and that she must return home quickly. No one would tell her anything, very few would even meet her eyes, so she did as told. The school sent her forth magically, teleporting her, alone, back to her home. When she returned home, she found even her worst imaginings did not come even close to the horror of what was. Her family's home was burned to the ground, no stone left upon another. The people who lived close by had done this, as it had been found out that her parents were demon wirshipers, and had been working to create a demonic gate under their home. It made no sense to Robin, as her parents had no such dealings, they were simple farmers, and would not harm a hair on anyone's head, let alone traffic with demons. She did not have time to wonder about it though, as soon as she was sighted, those she had called friends, those she had grown up with, grabbed up stones and started to come towards her. Robin Ran. She ran hard and long. When her school pack dragged at her, she dropped it and continued moving without it. Her old neighbors did not give up though, hunting her day and night. It was several days before they finally gave up the hunt. Robinr ested for a bit, then decided to head to a larger city nearby. Her hope was to get somewhere she could find a transport to school, and at least get there and have a safe place to rest as she decided what to do next. When she arrived in the closest city of any size though she found her face posted on nearly every surface. She was labeled as a demon worshipper, and a large reward was posted for her, dead or alive. Every place she went, town after town, city aftre city, they all had the same signs, the same reward. She attempted to speak to someone, but was nearly captured. No one would let her explain that she had nothing to do with demons, nor had her parents. With nothing else to do, Robin found herself living off the streets. She used what little magic she had to aid her in this, and had the one thing she had salvaged from her school days, a spellbook.
When the dream came, she saw it as a chance. Maybe she could prove herself by doing this thing. Months had passed since she had seen any signs showing her face, and she was a good ways from her home now. This city was somewhere she had finally found she could move about freely, without risk of being captured for the reward. Maybe this dream was her chance, her chance to prove she was no demon worshiper, and, maybe, be able to restore the good names of her parents. She knew that was unlikely, but she had to do something; She could not live like this much longer.
I could go customs lineage, take fey touched but home brew it gith touched:
gets misty step, (which was part of the gith background psionics)
take lvl 1 abjuration or transmutation spell,
then can take magehand as one of my cantrips and we homebrew that it’s transparent for this class?
Works for me. I am fine with the houseruled transparent mage hand, and calling it Fey Touched instead of Gith Touched is just flavor so no objections there.
I would like to reserve the decision to make it from a custom lineage or variant human based on the caster/weapon user balance of the party: if it’s mostly casters I’ll go human variant to have the 16 dexterity and wield a weapon , if it’s more weapon users I’ll go custom lineage and rely more on cantrips :)
the githyanki get sword and medium armor proficiencies, which make walking into battle more practical ;) maybe a wizard or a hex blade would work netter with the path we are going down
otherwise confirmed on the “Gith Touched” feat we are gonna use to flavor the character!
Remember, since you aren't githyanki any more you won't get those racial weapon and armor proficiencies...you will have the racial proficiencies of a custom lineage or variant human.

so I made some changes to fit in our Gith Touched of Misty step & Shield to a build that could still feel plays like a githyanki, so I went custom lineage race and hex blade warlock as the base class to be able to step into melee! Will consider some multi class move to aberrant mind sorcerer later on, which I would consider for RP that Gilderai’s warlock and sorcerer powers are all part of one set of abilities all coming from the same patron/supra self relationship of dreamer to dream.
Why are you saying yes to the dream? : For the thrill of it of course! This is the manner that he has heard from Tymora (rarely) in the past, so he believes that she must have something to do with it.
Background :
Giles has a way of blending in such that you would never notice him in a room, in a tavern, in a concert chamber. He has one of those faces, “Aren’t you that guy? You look familiar to me, I just can’t place you.” He’s heard all of that before. And I’m sure he will again.
How many of you have had the chance, nay, the _luck_, the incredible blessing to meet your deity? And lived to tell about it? You are speaking to one just now. Everyone knows her name, says it casually as they roll the dice, roll the bones, make the bet. But they really don’t know her, haven’t encountered her like I have. Tymora. See? Instantly you know her, but really? Do you really?
She has blessed me, given me gifts, abilities, and I will use them. She has never wanted me to turn away from any adventure, she has brought me through countless scrapes and tough spots. I know she has bigger plans for me…
You see, last night I had this dream, a raven was talking to me?!? Like it was directing me to go to the Sleeping Dragon Inn. I watched myself walk in, as if I was a casual observer, outside of my body. It said I was “needed.” There would be danger, risk. And reward! I know she has something to do with it. I turned my head slowly and saw her sitting in the corner, pretty as anything, in a blue robe with silver cuffs and whitish beautiful hair, nodding at me when I looked at her. And she pointed to the raven. And that’s when I woke up. Hell yes! I’m here to take my chance and roll the bones! So, why are you here?
Backstory: Ellara's parents had difficulty conceiving, and went to a green hag for it to finally happen--but they weren't prepared for what they would get, and in the face of their strange, fey infant daughter, they discarded her and tried to pretend she had never happened. Perhaps the hag, Marie, had planned for this from the beginning, or perhaps it was simply a happy coincidence for her, but whatever the cause, she was there to claim the discarded baby girl and raise her as a hag would. Ellara tried to be okay with this, but hags don't make very good parents, even if she did learn a bit of magic. At any rate, in her early teen years, Ellara overheard Marie speaking to a sister about something she'd been considering doing: making her little part-fey girl something truly wonderful, something just like the two of them. And Ellara ran. She snuck out of the lair the first chance she got and made a break for it. And she's been running ever since, sometimes disguising herself as something more human-looking to enter towns and cities, but for the most part, she's been a wanderer. Ellara knows hags don't give up easily, and that if she ever stops moving for long, Marie will find her. But she's been practicing in the meanwhile, teaching herself how to fight. Maybe Marie will find her, but she'll be ready.
And then she had the Dream. A Dream that offered her favors, and teammates who were rejects like her. A sense of belonging--and maybe, just maybe, people who might help her with the hag that's undoubtedly pursuing her even years later. How could she ever say no?
Sorry to say, I don't have a character sheet yet, as I can't access Lineages. Should I just use homebrew to recreate it?
Sorry to say, I don't have a character sheet yet, as I can't access Lineages. Should I just use homebrew to recreate it?
Making a home brew copy is fine. I have homebrew copies of all of the feats and backgrounds. Haven't gotten around to doing all of the races quite yet. But I am pretty good at the homebrew stuff, so if you get stuck on anything let me know and I can take a stab at it.
Barrakir is a pursuer of beauty, and enlightenment. He is looking for a perfection in living his life. He was born to a form that is often met with fear, disgust, or hatred, but considers himself fortunate to have been found by a warrior-monk, Xu Xiloscient. Barrakir had been left at the door of a shrine occupied by this solitary monk on a low mountain. It is uncertain if the one who left him there hoped Xu would kill the baby, or raise him, but Xu chose to raise him. Barrakir took up following Xu around and attempting to imitate his training and meditation as soon as he could. But Barrakir was not ignorant of the world’s views on Tieflings either. Barrakir suspects he was sent into local villages on purpose, to cause a fight and see how Barrakir would fair. Still, he values his teacher’s judgement and insight. So when this dream came to him, he revealed it to Xu, asking for advice. Xu smiled and turned his back on Barrakir.
Barrakir is looking for inner piece, and enlightenment. Beauty. Truth. To create something that speaks louder than words. Yet, he knows it can’t be done from the top of a mountain. He goes to follow the Raven’s instructions.

Race: Custom Lineage (Fey Touched)
Class (Subclass planned): Artificer 1 (Multiclassing in wizard, Chronomancer at level 2)
Stats: Point buy
Background: Lorehold Student
Backstory

This looks really interesting! Charlie’s Angels D&D, I like it! I’ll be creating a variant human Cleric for consideration.

so I made some changes to fit in our Gith Touched of Misty step & Shield to a build that could still feel plays like a githyanki, so I went custom lineage race and hex blade warlock as the base class to be able to step into melee! Will consider some multi class move to aberrant mind sorcerer later on, which I would consider for RP that Gilderai’s warlock and sorcerer powers are all part of one set of abilities all coming from the same patron/supra self relationship of dreamer to dream.

Custom Lineage - Gith Touched Feat
Warlock base toward Aberrant Mind Sorcerer
Name : Giles Serpentflower

Race : Variant human, telekinetic.
Class : Cleric, Trickery domain
Background : Faceless
I know she has bigger plans for me…
Name: Ellara
Race: Hexblood
Class: Eldritch Knight Fighter
Stats: Point Buy
Background: Hermit
Making a home brew copy is fine. I have homebrew copies of all of the feats and backgrounds. Haven't gotten around to doing all of the races quite yet. But I am pretty good at the homebrew stuff, so if you get stuck on anything let me know and I can take a stab at it.

Barrakir - feral Tiefling - Monk (Kensei) - Hermit
https://www.dndbeyond.com/profile/nschrock/characters/64612759
