"I wonder..." Kathleen looks around the new room and the ceiling. Does the previous hole in the ground lead here? Is there a pillar on this floor where the hole was on the floor above?
You are not passing underneath the strange pit, so there is no trace of it. The tunnel leads even farther northward, away from the chamber. No strange substances are found.
The tunnel is long and the ceiling is low, both circumstances making for a miserable experience. After an hour of such travel, a magnificent sight appears before your eyes upon your exit of the tunnel.
A massive gate, fully fifty feet tall and twenty wide, wrought extraordinarily of iron and gilded with gold stands before your eyes. It is set into the back wall of a medium-sized cavern, and two caves inset with iron bars rest to either side of the gate, another fifty feet up. For the first time since you met him, possibly in his life, Dwinkle is speechless. A single tear rolls down his cheek and into his trimmed yellow beard.
"Bhailenteine" He finally whispers. "The City of Refuge"
In spite of the miserable walk, Kathleen was still in high spirits. When they finally see the gate she is awestruck and stares at the huge gate. When Dwinkle finally finishes speaking Kathleen cheers and raises her fist in the air. With a large and happy smile that reveals her teeth, she shouts in excitement, "We did it guys! We found the legendary gold city!"
No stranger to filth and muck, the half orc looked upon the gate and his eyes gleamed with thoughts of gold. This was his chance for the new beginning he had hoped for. The little dwarf announced its name, and Ghorbash responded. "How do we get in?" Very succinct and to the point, Ghorbash did not mix words. He wanted to be rid of the dwarf as quickly as possible.
Adoy, not bothered at all by the tight space and very much one to enjoy a long walk, is not in the least bit troubled by the trek through the tunnel. He is not so much impressed by the artistry of the door but by the fact that it appears so intact after so many years underground unattended. The fact that this structure seems to defy entropy, that natural and steady march towards disorder and decay, that simple "force" that allows for the balance of life and death in the world, this unnerves Adoy.
"There is something terribly unnatural about this place, some magic that refuses to let go the past perhaps, that or someone has been maintaining this place, or surely that iron would have rusted away and that gold would be covered so thickly in a patina so as to be unrecognizable. I think we should be cautious."
I think I should have added that the gate is indeed showing signs of wear. though not as much as one might expect. A thin coating of rust and some more of that luminescent moss coats the edges, but the gate itself is strong and the gold still shines faintly.
Kathleen says, "Let me try something." She knocks on the giant door and shouts, "Is anyone in there? We're a group of adventurers that stumbled on to this place. We come in peace. Please respond and let us in."
When the sound of Kathleen's hammering dies down, the hall is just as silent as before.
"Well," Says Dwinkle refelctively, "It is said that the doors to Bhailenteine were never opened unless in extreme circumstances. But I know little more than you of this place, only the tales and legends told to young dwarf children."

Ghorbash
With the others, he examined the gate and the surrounding rock. Kathleen's knock was his first choice as well, but the elf beat him to the punch. As he noticed the handholds, he thought they may be able to suffice for climbing, but the dwarf knew more than he was letting on. Once Dwinkle mentioned a way to open up, the half orc walked up to him and clearly said, "Speak, dwarf. What do the tales say?" He waited for an answer with a stern look on his face.

Kathleen announces, "Deeper we go!" If no one objects she will confidently and cheerfully march down the tunnel.
Gris grasps his spear tighter and fallows Kathleen

Gris try to push the gate.
"I wonder what lives there..."
Kathleen says, "Let me help you with that." She also pushes the gate with Gris.
The massive gate does not give way a millimeter, nor does it emenate a single sound.

"Maybe you have to pull instead of push," Ayoola quips. She then turns to Dwinkle. "Anything useful you know about this place?"

Adoy will look around for any cracks or holes in the wall that a small creature may be able to squeeze through.
The walls of the cavern are rough and have sufficient handholds for a trained climber, but there are no holes or cracks.

Wait, how far is the top of the gate from the ceiling?
